View Full Version : Intelligence of Raptors and their owners

How do falconers distinguish the different intelligence levels between the different species. How does a Buzzard compare to a Peregrine for example? And does stubboness in the Red Tail indicate 'thickness' or a VERY smart bird. Can raptors be put in a league table in terms of their ability to learn, respond and act?

Do people have any interesting instances of 'remarkable' behaviour in their hawks??

I had a gos that learnt to take pheasants or ducks over water and then drown it, it would wait until they were both over water (any amount) then bind and drown them.

My red took a pheasant in a stream last year ,it was his first kill but what a classic ,
The land i hunt on has a pheasant farm at the side of it so this year i should get a few more ,lol

OF: Christ that is smart. Bloody handy as well mate :)

Jonny....I would never 'dis' a mans choice of hawk. But I am just asking if they have different levels of intelligence. I like Reds mate, if you read my question I am asking if they are SMARTER than we think. Jeepers Jonny calm down :) Oh and I like owls. Oh and I don't fight I just call my mother, who is a Lawyer, then go on holiday to the Maldives on the proceeds :)

Dumb Pikey. Take no notice of him Benc. He knows his birds are more intelligent than him, but not quite as clever as a runner bean! PMSL PIKEY!

the thing is you just cant compare really. each bird has their own style and nature has catered for their individual needs. good question but so very hard to answer.
