Over the past few weeks I have received e- mails from others asking for help either with patterns and or how to info. As you can see by the Thread heading I am not as willing to offer assistance and help. I have STOPPED sharing patterns and have pretty much stopped giving advice to others that ask. I for the longest time helped all , about making hoods, how do you do this or that, can you help me with this etc, in fact I made a thread a few years ago on how to make a glued hood.
Why the turn around? Let me explain and then perhaps you will understand better.
Case 1- A gent from Europe mailed me and told me he bought a set of knock off Rollins hood blocks and was having problems fitting the patterns. I had never spoken to the fellow before but offered to send him Rollins patterns. I had to Photo copy 14 of them, pay for the shipping and large mailing envelope etc, I was never reimbursed. The fellow had written a book so he claimed and had been making hoods for several years and he said he would send me a copy of his book and a hood for my collection in return for the patterns and help. Deal or so I thought. I sent the patterns, he mailed me back saying thank you and they fit great to his blocks, never heard from him again,, AND am still waiting for his part of the deal. That was almost 2 years ago.
Case 2- A gent mailed me asking about a particular hood , and would I share this unique pattern? After a few mails etc. I sent the pattern to him and once received I helped him step by step on how to make the hood. The agreement was That
A- you share the pattern with no one.
B- you make the hood for your own collection and not make any pictures public and NOT OFFER THE HOOD FOR SELL.
Within hours of finishing the hood, pictures were posted on a forum and soon they were available for sale.
Case 3- Sent other patterns to the same fellow , and was offered a hood for all the help, still waiting for the hood? That was about 4 years ago..
Case 4- This one is the BEST!!,, Same fellow, (as Cases 2 and 3), sent several e-mails to many prominent falconers throughout Europe saying that I was behind his falcon being killed..Yes, you read this right, falconers were being told that I of hired Thugs as he called them to follow him and when his bird was released to call the bird down with a lure and beat the falcon to death.
UNBELIEVABLE!!
I could also go on how the same guy in cases 2, 3 and 4 purchased my blocks copied them, sold the originals on e-bay, then after all this, he bashed my blocks saying they were no good, So WHY were they copied?
I could go on and tell of many more incidents, but I think you all can get the idea.
I hope after all have read this you will somehow understand how and why I feel this way.

Sakerjack,

That's a shame, i was just reading the glued hood artical today and thinking great stuff. i've just started to make them for myself as a hobby and articals like that are a great help. You did mention that you were going to bring a dvd or video out in your artical, is this still the case or is it already released or is it shelved for the moment. cheers
its terrible that honest decent and helpfull people like yourself always seem to get the "good samaritan" treatment from others who are only interested in feathering their own nests ! i dont blame you for not wanting to help people any more after the treatment you have endured.you sound like a good guy who would help anyone, maybe its time to change buddy and get a little tougher.start charging for your expertise and ideas etc.
why not name and shame the B******* too!

I agree with both you and Dave G. I gab and trade ideas with many on this forum as well as some other fine hood makers including John Moran, Ron Rollins, Clayton Smith, Jeremy Bradshaw, Steve Tait, Scott Webster, David Wadsworth, just to name a few, BUT it really gets to you after you hear all the BS from some,, Life is just too short for aggrevations and I am sick of aggrevations!
I made this thread so that when someone does ask for help etc they will not be offended when I say NO..
Never have magpies with heads on them long enough to stick a hood on but thanks for the offer Jim ! :yawinkle: Alf. .

Sorry you have been treated badly, You tend to think of the brotherhood of falconry and assume everyone feels the same as you. sadly there are some who just have no moral fibre and will never live up to our own standards.
I ran into this at the NAFA meet, someone stole my photo album I set it down for a few minutes on a table and someone walked off with it. I have negatives for most of the pictures but not all. The worst of it was that a fellow falconer at this gathering celebrating our community saw it as a chance to grab some cool pictures. it is a very dissapointing feeling Ken.

Very sorry to hear about your experience at the NAFA Meet, just a Friggin shame.. Brotherhood?? You would like to think that Terence, I would like to think that as well BUT to MANY out there Brotherhood means simply an easy way to steal and screw someone for personal reasons .
If I really was going to hire Thugs (which is just absolutely ridiculous, friggin outrageous, and pathetic? ) they would have been hired to kill the idiot who screwed me not the damn bird..

I have just had a similar experience i am afraid Ken well you may think it even worse to be honest, i have not been hood making that long about 2 years or so now, but all i have learnt has been from books and trial and error and hard work, i have thrown many a hood in the bin cos it was not quite right etc etc. Anyway this polish lad got friendly with me, another falconer so i thought i was pretty safe, he lost his job and asked if he could come along and help me in the workshop which i agreed. I also agreed that any hoods we made together i would deduct the material costs and split the rest 50/50 which is not a bad deal in anyones book as i had spent hundreds and hundreds of pounds on blocks and kit. So he turned up and all was great a little slow learning but then again i am probably not the best teacher, anyhow it took about 2 weeks getting him up to speed and then guess what??? Yep you got it he ****ed off and is now selling his own hoods all over poland, i feel such a **** but like you Ken I would help anyone out and never even thought he would have the balls to do it, harse lesson but i have learnt it well. By the way i only make them for a hobby really i am not quick enough to make a living out of it as i have 6 metal bolts in my back holding my spine together and it is something i can do whilst sat down.
So sorry to hear i am not the only one to be s##t on from a great height, whats the matter with people these days???????

Ken,
speaking as a person who was given a hood by you to try, I then bought some of your chinook blocks with patterns, which I have to this day.
I understand where you are coming from and it is a shame that you are being pushed down this route.
I make a Diablo hood up when the previous one is lost, or eaten by the dog etc.. I have also made a couple up for my hawking friend but not sold.
The blocks and patterns have not been copied or sold to anyone.
I had one enquiry about the diablo pattern, which I said I would give out provided the person contacted you and you agreed first.
Thanks again for the past help and advice.
All the best,
Mark.

Somewhere on your side of the pond I am afraid to say!
Ken this is a short peace from the book The Richest Man in Babylon.
The morale of the tale is? Alf.
be tricked away from him. It bringeth a feeling of
power and ability to do good. Likewise, it bringeth
opportunities whereby his very good intentions may
bring him into difficulties.
"Didst ever hear of the farmer of Nineveh who
could understand the language of animals? I wot not, for
'tis not the kind of tale men like to tell over the
78 THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON
bronze caster's forge. I will tell it to thee for thou
shouldst know that to borrowing and lending there
is more than the passing of gold from the hands of
one to the hands of another.
"This farmer, who could understand what the animals
said to each other, did linger in the farm yard
each evening just to listen to their words. One evening
he did hear the ox bemoaning to the ass the
hardness of his lot: 'I do labour pulling the plow from
morning until night. No matter how hot the day, or
how tired my legs, or how the bow doth chafe my
neck, still must I work. But you are a creature of
leisure. You are trapped with a colourful blanket and
do nothing more than carry our master about where
he wishes to go. When he goes nowhere you do rest
and eat the green grass all the day.'
"Now the ass, in spite of his vicious heels, was a
goodly fellow and sympathized with the ox. 'My
good friend,' he replied, 'you do work very hard and
I would help ease your lot. Therefore, will I tell you
how you may have a day of rest. In the morning
when the slave comes to fetch you to the plow, lie
upon the ground and bellow much that he may say
you are sick and cannot work.'
"So the ox took the advice of the ass and the next
morning the slave returned to the farmer and told
him the ox was sick and could not pull the plow.
" 'Then,' said the farmer, 'hitch the ass to the plow
for the plowing must go on.'
"All that day the ass, who had only intended to
help his friend, found himself compelled to do the
ox's task. When night came and he was released from
the plow his heart was bitter and his legs were weary
and his neck was sore where the bow had chafed it.
"The farmer lingered in the barnyard to listen.
The Gold Lender of Babylon 79
"The ox began first. 'You are my good friend. Because
of your wise advice I have enjoyed a day of
rest.'
" 'And 1,’ retorted the ass, 'am like many another
simple-hearted one who starts to help a friend and
ends up by doing his task for him. Hereafter you
draw your own plow, for I did hear the master tell
the slave to send for the butcher were you sick again.
1 wish he would, for you are a lazy fellow.' Thereafter
they spoke to each other no more—this ended their
friendship. Canst thou tell the moral to this tale,
It's too bad that there are so many scum bags out there.

him8, if its in your nature to be helpful then thats exactly what youll be regardless of the pitfalls, like my mum she will help any one even if she gets kicked up the ar-e she still goes out there and helps people, accept the rule that if you are willing to help ,someone will take advantage ,move on to your next good deed and hopefully a better person.

Ken,
I can understand where you are coming from. I have had bad experiences in this line of work as well. To trust people blindly in this day and age, is to be very unkind to your ownself. More than once I have had people buy goods worth several hundred dollars, and then renege on their promise to pay me, once the goods reached them. I have also had people plagiarise my hoods, gloves, bells, swivels, jesses, leashes and blocks too. Therefore, I have pulled off the web, all the photos of my goods, and now deal with customers strictly on a cash first basis.

Hello Ken, I know exactly how you feel, and the worst part is these rouges think they are so clever to have got one over you, but, i really believe that it does them no good long term. You can only stick by your principles, why should you lower your standards because of the scum, honesty must surely prevail otherwise there,s no hope. Best of luck in your business, you obviously have a lot of respect in the falconry fraturnity. Cheers Dave.

It seems to me that the finest hoods are a combination of Function and Art.
A thief may steal what he needs to make an exact copy but, in reality, he has only created a Functional hood. The Art comes from a man's very soul and cannot be stolen...only copied by one who is overwhelmed by envy and avarice.
If you allow yourself to become bitter and untrusting then he has indeed stolen something important. You should not allow him to succeed in stealing your capacity for generosity. It's the nature of the man that's reflected in his art. IMHO.

Rene, your words make perfect sense,I can live with being taken advantage of and lied to, etc, BUT I just wonder then, how one can explain WHY said person would send out LIES saying that I had his bird killed? It is PATHETIC and a CRIME that such a low life of a human being could stoop to that level.
Thanks for your words.

I second that. When I was brand new to falconry, and gathering my supplies for my first bird, I ordered a hood from Ken. He gave me some good advice and was a friendly voice (if only by email). When I wanted to give a custom hood to my sponsor in appreciation, he put a great deal of effort into making a custom hood that had a RCMP theme (something that hadn't been done before). I'm sure we've all had some experiences where we've helped others, and didn't even receive so much as a 'thank you'. I just don't get it when people can't show appreciation and respect.

In every walk of life there are people who take the **** out of genuine people and it'll kill/ limit this sport imagine if every falconer refused to take beginners out anymore for example. I can see where you are coming from 100% but instead of penalising people ask for them to send there stuff first as they should know someone like yourself wouldn't want to ruin your reputation by not furfilling your end of the deal atb Jakk:supz:

I've gotten alot of help from Ken over the past 3 years. He went as far out of his way to make me a fitting hood as anyone could. He's helped me out with patterns and advice and I think many young hoodmakers today owe him a debt of gratitude. If I recall correctly, I took my time in getting some items of thanks off to Ken in return for his efforts but he never once complained and was happy to receive my modest gifts. A true gentleman.
Ken, don't let a few bad ones put you off. Besides, if you get really angry you can just have another hit taken out on the b"#%&'(ds' birds.

Hey Ken,
I cannot express how much I understand your position. Been there done that as you know...by the same gent if you remember??
I know you haven't heard from me for a while but I still lurk in the shadows. Got a couple o weeks left of this madness then back to building some hoods.
No one who ever has gotten taken by another Falconer blames you at all. In fact good for you for just coming out and telling everyone. Stay in touch.

It's a real shame, that you find yourself in this situation, but I can completely understand. It seems to come with the pastime, and I'm sure there are many members that have found themselves in the same position at some stage. Whether your situation or different. A lesson that it ALWAYS learnt the hard way!!! I've tried making hoods and I just don't have the patience. I really do hold you and your craftsmen counterparts in high regard.
I could seriously spend a lot of money visiting your site, if the wife would let me:roll:. But I hope you we are still going to be able to purchase hoods from you. NO PATTEN OR BLOCK REQUIRED. Seriously though. I'm looking for something a wee bit special for when my wee man arrives. All the in future and I hope to talk to you soon.

Ken, your a nice guy, too nice for your own good and unfortunately some selfish people ruined it for others with whom you usually helped. I know I was one of the lucky ones who had you assist and help more than anyone else I've ever not met...and that amazes me. I personally can't thank you enough for that and can only say to those who are pi$$ed off today that you won't help...we falconers are sometimes our own worst enemies.

Got your phone message I will wait until we can talk more about your hood and falcon.
Ken it is obvious to me that you have been unbelievably lucky in my opinion, to have helped the number of people that you obviously have and not been ripped of to an even greater extent. That is one of the problem in falconry today, there is no tradition, no sense of honour and even worse no respect. Every other post "please help me do ....." people like yourself read the books tried, worked out the problems and solved the new ones that cropped up. The story springs to mind of the TV repair man who charged £50 just to hit the TV and solve the problem, when asked how he could justify charging so much just to hit the damned thing. His replytypifies this whole situation, " The £50 is not for hitting the TV but for the years involved in learning where to hit it". Keep up the good work and to hell with the idiots cos life is full of them......

Over the past few weeks since I started this thread I have had time to reflect.. **** heads are going to be **** heads,, and they always will be . They will continue to go on and pretend they invented this or that and continue to fool themselves, and screw others. That will never change.

Perhaps I'll do another How to Thread soon..
