Hi Guys,
Have been busy the last week so not been online as often as normal.
Two days ago someone gave us a injured German hagard goshawk tiercel. He has got a bruised right wing. So I will train him now till he is fit again and then release him
The great thing about him is that he is probably one of the calmest goshawks we ever had. He is feeding from the fist since we got him. He is about 700g.
I will post daily on his progress and post some pics soon.

Yeah, I am back, but going back to the UK on the 30th. So I have got only 3 weeks to get him back on the track, but it should be possible.

Forgot to tell you guys something. He had 5 ticks on the right side of his head, between the beak and the eye. When I removed them today he was standing on my fist and did not even move. I can't delieve that he was wild just the day before yesterday. We are going to apply for a cites for him and chip him. If that works I am going to take him to England.
Are many goshawks that calm? He is not scared of me at all.

When I removed them today he was standing on my fist and did not even move.
Probably a mixture of apprehension and sheer p1ssed off disbelief at the indignity of it all Moritz.
<BTW>You are a lucky B*****d  <----Envy

Not easy to breed from a haggard Gos Ben!
I personaly wouldnt want to waste a haggard tiercel by feeding it to a female
It would be like p1ssing in the holy grail for me m8

As with all birds it is more likley for a captive bred specimen to breed in captivity than a wild one as the latter will be more occupied with rememberances of its "Glory days".
The NEFC set up its own breeding program with passage and haggard Goshawks years ago. Only one pair out of three or four ever did the business and this was after they had passed out of the clubs hands to a private individual and they had spent a number of years in captivity sequested within seclusion aviarys.

Hi Guys,
no pics so far, could not get my hands on a camera but I will get one tonight.
Feed him half a chick on fist. He started eating after 5 min on the fist. Bated 2 times before hand. I then put him on a post, held fist with other half of the chick in front of him. He stepped up after 5 sec. repeated with the other 2 halfs of the other chick. Looks good so far. Will try a step further tomorrow.

Couldn't they have just used the Hat or AI......The reason I am asking Moritz is because it would provide new genes would it not??? (Now I know nothing about any of this, but its just a thought :) :) )

His wing still looks strange, you will see it on the pics. He holds it in a strange way. The Vet said it is not broken. I will get some medicine today, Ali told me about it, Arnica ointment. If he keeps his wing in this position, we will be able to keep him. It will be difficult to get the CITES for him. If I breed with him I will use an experienced German female that breed before. I would work together with an experienced goshawk breeder.
You are right about the Genes, that is one of the reasons I would like to try it. I think the did not you AI because at this point they did not know that you can do it. They also did not know about imprinting.

PMSL!!!
So an other good day! I carried him for 1 hour and he was very calm. hE nibbeled my glove a couple of times expecting food. I then put him down again coz I had to go on with building the eagle aviary. At 6 pm my m8 came along with the scales. I weighted "Felix" it showed that the other falconers guess was wrong. He was not around 700g but only 570g. It is going to be difficult to find a good weight for him as I do not know is moult weight. I took him out to the flying field next to the house. Popted him on the post and held my fist with a chick on it 10 cm infront of him. He looked at it but did not move. So I ripped a chick leg of and took the chick of my fist. I picked him up and he eat the leg. Back on the post and the chick 10 cm infront. Now he jumped for it! I repeated it two more times. He good 3 chicks in total. Weighted him he was 650g. Lets see what 2morrow brings.
Here some pics!!!

It is going to be difficult to find a good weight for him as I do not know is moult weight
Why do you need to know his moult weight? Can't you judge this by checking his repsonse?? Can you tell if he is in yarak?

Having him in yarak is the key Moritz. His weight is of little importance.
Appetite is on the other hand, along with how he is handled and what "Indignitys" you expose him to m8 (From his point of view. All blame rests at your door)

Hi Guys,
took him out at 5pm and walked with him for a couple of minutes. Then gave him one chick leg. Popped him on the post and held the fist with chick 20 cm in front. He looked at the fist and jumped straight away. While eating the chick I walked around the garden to get him used to different things. He is not scared of the dog at all very good. I repeated the jumping two more times and went to 40cm. Tomorrow I will let him jump for less food.
weight:575g
after feeding:660g

Are you sure that wing droop is not him mantling?  Dpn't get so hung up on weight, judge him by response and learn how to identify when he is in yarak.
Moritz
14-07-2005, 12:10 AM
I just do the weight to make sure that I don't starf him. I will do him about the yarak. The wing is all the time in this position, when sitting on the bowperch or my fist.

HI guys,
Felixes wing is not getting better. So I decided to stop the flying and just let him hope to the fist and feed on fist. We will have to keep him, so their may be the chance of getting a CITES for him.
