In preperation for the new bird coming in about 6weeks and under...
I've decided to get the gyr/saker, mainly because I done have another bird  and the lawn is a bit bare, and I'm ready for one to train from an eyass and see what I have learnt, so you can read all my mistakes and comment on them lol, as i've no doubt that you wont!
Just sorting out a hood now, decided to try and make my own anglo indian and dutch, I'll probebly end up buyin a hood off Griff, a nice dutch hood, so watch out!
I have all the blocks, just finishing the mews off now, shelf perch style personal boxes, max of 3 birds in there at one time, but It'll just be the gyr/saker for awhile. Going to buy some wings for lures, new bell's, batteries for the telemetry and a new whistle (cant whistle without one! )
Thats the latest, just waiting for Mark to e-mail me back saying that he's got all the documents sorted, then after the CLA and a couple weeks later (end of the summer hols) the beast will be arriving.
Getting names together: Nemisis, Tyrant, Khan, Sniper, Couger, Calibur and Gyro. lol.
See you all tomozo, will be on the school computers as norm - cant belive they let me on lol, thought it would have been blocked lol! Mind you, better than dying of boredom!

lol BB,
did the anglo last night, but too small in neak i think, so I'm doing another one later on prahaps. Will get a pic for you too look at, not as good as ure hoods lol - any tips? Buying a set of 3 hood block for gyr/saker sized, the mesurements I got are 5.8 - 6.0cm, afra was a 5.4cm. The hood I did was 5.9, so I'll do one bigger and one smaller. The dutch hood is gona be hard, I'm going to need some more leather, get sum calf cus all i got is black kangaroo lol.

Hi Hannah,
I think you won't need a hood. Normally they come with the bird.

Hiya,
You joking Moritz! lol, Hopefully it will be a bahrain hood, so I'll keep that for best I guess. Still waiting for conformation from Mark Rob, the a10 and the other documents, but wont be picking him up untill during the summer hols so i have plenty of spare time to do extra manning and hopefully have him up and flying free in time for school.
BB, your hood diary helped me out quite abit, shame the pattern was dodgy etc, but I'm learning! You'll have to try doing dutch and arab hood etc, then show us how you get on the same way with the anglo-indian.
thx,
Hannah

Just chop it about a bit Hannah, Its not an exact science. make a few of dirrerent shapes and sizes and then work with the best fitting one until its mint.
Making hoods like this is not a waste as it will serve to refine your technique.

lol, his white tiercels are fantastic, but females are even better (obviously lol :) ) I'm not bothered what mines like just as long as he's mine and he's keen on hunting lol. He said It's be a cream/white, but if the arabs didnt need so many birds, he'd think about a white one for me, he's a good guy really lol. I dont think they are huge huge birds, large yeah, fantastic colour though, that sets them apart from most birds, and the trade mark feet. If you want large gyr/sakers, get hold of Nick Fox, Terry had a male of him flying at 2lb 5, mine should be around 1lb 15 - 2lb 1 or so, whatever, I'll be happy!
PeregrinesUK
03-08-2005, 08:58 PM
2lb 1 thats big for a 50/50 gyr saker normally they fly around the 1lb 10- 12 mark.... 2lb 5 i would of said was a female but i havent seen him so i dont know- i had a 3/4 gyr 1/4alti saker and it only flew at 2lb ?

lol, these are decent birds, na, only joking, hav a look...
Approximate weights for Gyr / Sakers range from 750g-1150g for males and 1000-1650g for females.
so thats 1lb 14? to 2lb 5? mite need to check on a calculator, but thats pretty big lol.
Check out the pics that h4wka took at the CLA, the big white falcon at the end was the gyr/saker, and he's a beauty!

Lol Moritz!
Yep, the mighty one has arrived! He looks just like a mini Jerkin, but with brown markings instead! He is white, I'm very suprised about that lol, I wasn't expecting such a light bird! His name is Shiro, which is japanese for white so again like afra is fits the bill!
For a bird that has been hacked and jesses the day before I picked him up, he is amazingly calm and relaxed - he ate a couple legs yesterday, as I decided to spend some time with him. He will his if you pick him up but is improving each time you play with him. He's fine with dogs and cats, the cat has learned that birds of prey are dangerouse and keeps her distance. Traveling home was no problem, you could forget about him unless he roused or scratched himself. He did jump out of the box hooded, but I think I suprised him abit! He sits up strait on your fist and had a tour only 10mins ago of the garden, roused abit and only bated twice regaining the fist by himself. He has lovely blue feet and cere, his feet I'd think were small in span, but thickset, just like the rest of him He's about 18" tall at a rough mesurment and comes in at a hefty 2lb 3 so I was told. I did get him on the scaled, but he wasnt sitting properly and I only got a 2lb 1 1/2.
I'm hoping he will have a half quail or full chick on the fist tonight. All chicks are de-yolked to keep his blue feet true! He's fantastic, very smart and steady, takes the world in and thinks things through after a few seconds panic.
He's a brillian bird so thanks very very very much to Mark Rob and family and staff - because he is a top bird and has abit more than I expected. My family love him and are always popping out to watch him and he doesnt mind so much! He's worth his weight in gold!
As for pictures, I'm afraid I have lost the digi camera! So...pics might be a while in coming, but I'll see what I can do, maybe get him web cam lol.
He he!

Hello!
Never thought I'd say this today, his first day with me but..he's eating off the fist!
We had a barbeque in today, so between preparing the garden, mowing the lawn, polishing and cooking, I've been picking him up, moving him, playing with him and playing loud music and waving strange objects close by. He's seen the cat and dog, watched me dance mowing the lawn (good fun!) and lying down next to him. He's amazing. No other word for it. Oh, maybe relaxed and smart would come into it aswell.
We had around 15 ppl walking around the garden and going up to him at a distance. He bated a few times but was extreamly relaxes and blase about everything. During the BBQ I picked him up and showed him round to everybody. He didnt bate! I even let 3 of the guest's attempt to hold him, he stepped down and stepped back up! He let them stroke his chest and feel his keel (lots of muscle)
Near the end, bout 9:10, I got a piece of beef out and he ate bout 1/2 a crop full. He weighed in today at 2lb 1/2, so he's lost 1oz as it was quite cold last night. We'll start jumping tomorrow if he can. Cant belive how quick he's coming on, first day and already he's doing stuff that I'd expect a bird flying free to be doing! I'm gobsmacked, but the guest's loved him, didnt make too much noise when I was around, but were lauighing loud and he wasnt bothered by that! He's had a bath today, it was quite warm in the sun, he was panting a little, even put an umbrella up for him and he appreciated that. He's watching all the little birds that fly over, near the evening, bats were also in his sights.
He's a fantastic bird! SHIRO!

not totally sure, but i was told he is a p/r so i do belive them. I think he's just a very relaxed bird! Whatever, aslong as he stays silent I'm not bothered.

Hello!
Shiro was great at the centre, letting small kids come upto him and tickle his chest, walk by very close and scream an shout! He had a perch behind the cabin, so he could relax, listen to a waterfeature and have a bath. I had my lunch sat a foot away whilst he dozed and kept admiring on-lookers away lol.
The Head Falconer liked him I think, doesnt belived he's been hacked and think's he's an imprint...hmm. Mind you, Shiro wasnt impressed by HF, bated and lied down on the floor shaking! Had to pick him up and spend some time calming him down.
We had walks down on the field, watched pigeons and doves, the odd kes and crows etc. Walked past aviaries and had to calm him down when the pressure washer turned on! He did have bout 1oz of beef again. Down to 1lb 15 in weight. Approximatly a 1oz drop.
Still as beautifull as ever!

todays update...
1lb 15 1/2. Must have been hotter in the night that useral. Thats a 1/2oz gain.
He was, very spuprising, quite hungry, and has had bout 1/4oz of beef, before the dog ran in and ate it. No grub for him tonight lol. Still not jumping and keen enough, needs another 1oz or 1 1/2oz drop. Will see if he will jump for 1/2 chick today. Doubt it but give him the chance. Woke up very late today n'all, so chicks hav just finished defrosting. Didnt go down the centre today, just sending time round the house and with Shiro. Really calming down, will step back onto my glove with out bating.
aww!

This is great news Hannah,
But you are telling me that you have a wild hacked gyr/saker that has been jessed up and blocked for only 3 days and small kids can stroke his chest and he is cool with that?
What sort of weight are you expecting him to be flying free at first?
What are your goals, I mean what would you have liked him to of achieved by the end of the season when you put him in a pen to moult?
Afshimo
19-08-2005, 05:56 PM
He is wild hacked, ask Mark himself or Moritz. Unbeliveably yes, he is ok with that, liked the extra attention too.
MON: Out of the aviary, jesses, hooded and blocked.
TUE: 3 hour drive back home.
WED: Ate off fist at BBQ
THU: Ate off fist at centre
FRI: Relaxing at home, just spedning time with him.
Hmm, for weight, prob 1lb 12 or so. My first prediction was way out lol.
My goal is to hunt. Purely and simply. But I want him to be relaxed and a family bird when he's in the garden or at the centre. Mainly so he's happy to be round a few people. Stroking wasnt in there and It'll just be me who strokes him from now on and just to feel his keel!
OhMyGod
19-08-2005, 06:02 PM
what would you like him to hunt?
Do you know when he was taken from hack and put in a pen? and what his weights were then and what his weight was on mon tues etc?
Afshimo
19-08-2005, 09:02 PM
I dont know when exactly he was taken out of hack and put into hack aviary, but i know he is at hack for a month.
On Mon, he was wighed at 2lb 3, I think thats his fat weight? Tue was 2lb 1
, wed was 2lb and thu was 1lb 15.
As for hunting, prob partriges or corvids, depends on his flight style.
Moritz

Hi Hannah
This is Sara writing, I been following your training with interesst. Sounds like you are doing pretty well indeed! I am sorry to hear some people dont seem to be pleased for you and your nice tempramented falcon but instead trying to find excuses for why he is so nice and calm (!) I can tell you that that falcon is NOT imprinted and anyone who have been around imprinted falcons know that they......scream!!!
Expecially when they are getting cut down in weight.
However....as he IS hacked he have seen me walking up to the hack box and putting food on there twice a day for at least 3 weeks (including the time before releasing). This make our falcons completly diffrent from a falcon reared in a enclosed chamber by its parents. After hack they get put into a large flying avary made only by net where they see people in the distance all day long. So they are not imprinted and NOT noisy, as you can probebly agree on, but they are quite easely tamed and that, I think, is a positive thing as you dont have to put to much pressure and stress on the falcon. Anyway, nice to hear you are doing so well and I am so pleased you like him. If you have any problems at all, please dont hesitate in contacting us!
