Hi all

Just more or less finished my male harris's aviary, was wondering if it is necessary to put in a nest box for it to get out of sight should the fancy take it? The aviary has 2 solid sides, wire front and a half covered half to be meshed side, all comments appreciated.

Thanks

What would it do with a next box if its a male? However I quite like the idea of giving it a place to call its own. But from what little experience I have I don't see the need for one. :)

Hi

I think he means not so much of a nesting box but a shelter, a large shelf which is half open and half enclosed so the harris can get up a dark corner if it wishes.
Does anyone else have something similar?

i think its definitely a good idea to provide a shelter, not only for them to feel safe but they can stay out of the wind too. It was too impractical in my mews, but there is a small tree and this atleast gives them something to hide behind

Cant think why it would want to get out of sight so I personally wouldn't bother. As long as the aviary is partly covered on the roof and sides then it should have all the shelter it needs.

As Mickey says, so long as there is enough cover to provide an area free from prevailing winds/drafts and rain it should be ok.

I have a box made out of plywood 3x 8" by 4 " sheets cut in half and screwed together. The box has a perch and tubular heater.

The bird likes it and roosts there every night.

The perch in the box is not the highest one in the weathering either.

Would certainly be useful if exposed to very cold winter nights, although positioning of the aviary should be such that the bird will not be facing the northerly wind.

I kept my MHH free-lofted in one of my owl aviaries one winter and fixed up a hinged door on the front of one of the nest boxes and I used to shut him in on the coldest nights - a bit like an outside night box - didn't use any heater though.

He never used to sit (or hide) in it during the day but was happy to jump into it at night.
