Ask you may be surprised, they don't have many good display falconers there. Do you think I pay my fare and accommodation in Dubai? They have bird control falconers here that have their air fare and accommodation paid for together with paid holidays at home.

Thanks for all the interest
Experience is not the key thing here, it is an easy going individual that mixes well
There are only about five bird of prey centres in the whole of SA, our one is probably one of the biggest. We are actually a rehabilitation facility that opens our doors to the public to raise money for the rehabilitation, so you are right Dean we do plead poverty, because we are poor :(
The job offers a liveable wage, and accommodation, no air fare i am afraid but there is the chance after the short contract with us to take over the reigns of a new centre just opening in Swaziland, this will be a full time job, and maybe a new life for someone if that is what they are looking for.
If the second option is not wanted it is just a chance to come and work in another country with eighty four species of birds of prey, work with some, go hunting with some, and of course get a chance to see black spars :)
I have had a few CV's and all look OK, but to be fair to everyone the job offer is open until the end of the month and then we will make a choice

Well well mark h. I think this is a fantastic way of getting the word out if you are looking for suitable staff. Mark runs a top class facility and lives in a awesome part of africa.:-) quality hawks, and a good quarry base that makes even local falconers salivate. If i was not tied up i'd prob also apply but bad timing.:-( but i hope that the best man/woman is selected for the job. As griff said we have a lack of suitably trained display falconers here and its not something that can be learned parrot fashion but there must be a true passion for the job at hand and hawks involved. If an oversees falconer gets it we would welcome them to our shores and they will live out an unforgetable experience in AFRICA! The guys in that province are all very good people and in my mind their club is up there with the best in sa. Just to wet the taste buds.!! You could go hunting with mark and dodger the black spar and maybe the falcon or even some other birds from the center, or just a short drive you could meet up with the rhodie george and his 27yr old ahe cilla, the late ron hartleys bird and join them on a bunny hunt at night.:-) remember you will be with george and so a case or two of beers is the cover charge.lol. or drive the other way and there is a private school with a school falconry club and see the af goses in action. And if i have to start on the wild birds....that would take a whole post.. It is the chance one should not miss or let pass by. Mark h still want to plan a trip when my brother is back in your neck of the woods later on in the year and i'll bring my ahe to do a bit of hunting, maybe 2 by then we'll see are you gonna be at the safa meet, maybe see you there. But again very good of you to open up the application process on here. And good luck to the applicants. Will hope to meet up at some point and enjoy a hunt with a few beers to finish the day off.
good hawking

Hi Mark,
we have spoken in the past and I have been to your centre in Dullstroom a couple of times. I spoke to you the last time in South Africa but wasn't quick enough, you had somebody coming out from UK.
i'M IN THE uk NOW BUT AM STILL INTERESTED. How long is the contract for and what is the salary.
Cheers

Well done Mark. I've been watching this thread with interest. You will have an amazing time i spent a month in Africa through Feb with the BBC and loved every minute of it. Will definately be going back some time its a truly special place.
The wildlife is unreal, raptors galore from Black eagle, Martial, Pygmy falcon, Secretary, lammergeir etc what more could you want. Even saw a black spar hunting parrots!
I know you'll have an amazing time, i had an e-mail from a friend yesterday who is a guide out there in Botswana, he has just come back from a 9 day safari and seen 5 Leopards, 6 cheetahs, 25 lions, 6 wild dog and all the usual stuff in 9 days!!!! In one day they saw 111 different species of bird!
Hope your ready for it!

Has to be 2nd generations captive bred birds. Since wild take is allowed, breeding is very small in SA.

hey all the marks (see, hear, and speak no evil)
well done on the possition and hope you enjoy what africa has to offer... i hope that you enjoy your time here and will hopefully get a chance to meet up sometime. my brothers boss has a farm near the marks center in dullstroom and i'll make a trip there when you start. i think that the Mpumalanga FC is up there with the best in SA and has some quality hawks and quarry. i hope that we get the chance to share some time in the field and will make a point of meeting up with some of my mates when we do that. Steven, George, the Marks are all nice guys and you have landed with your ass in the butter with respect to falconry:supz: Well done mate and wishing you the best of luck but make sure you put your drinking hat on coz you are gonna be entering a volitile killing zone and a successful hunt normally is followed but a good amount of Beer drinking!
i'll include a previous post i made about the falconry to be had
good hawking

Re: Display Falconer Wanted in South Africa
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well well mark h. I think this is a fantastic way of getting the word out if you are looking for suitable staff. Mark runs a top class facility and lives in a awesome part of africa. quality hawks, and a good quarry base that makes even local falconers salivate. If i was not tied up i'd prob also apply but bad timing. but i hope that the best man/woman is selected for the job. You could go hunting with mark and dodger the black spar and maybe the falcon or even some other birds from the center, or just a short drive you could meet up with the rhodie george and his 27yr old ahe cilla, the late ron hartleys bird and join them on a bunny hunt at night. remember you will be with george and so a case or two of beers is the cover charge.lol. or drive the other way and there is a private school with a school falconry club and see the af goses in action.
