I was reading the previous threads regarding microchipping and evryone seems to be in agreement it's a good idea. However when do people feel it's a good time for it to be done, immediatly after arrival?, after manning?, etc. or does it not matter?

I had my redtail chipped once he was flying free. I can't say if there is a good time or a bad time, i chose to have him done then. Prehaps one of the vets on here will suggest a best time.

I prefer, the sooner the better; you never know if the bird slips its leash or something!!!
I haverecently been told of a guy who just got a 16 week old HH; decided to change the equipment in the garage but left the door open.............................................. .........................the bird got out. This is a bird, straight out of the aviery and un manned. If it gets caught there is more chance of it being reunited....................................

need I say more

All my birds were chipped the day I took them to be 'insurance vet checked'. They get checked over and chipped all at the same time, less stress etc.

Doesn't really matter when you get the bird chipped but as mentioned accidents can happen so the sooner the better.

is there a size limit to the size of bird that can be chipped? i mean can even the smaller birds be chipped?

I think ANY bird can be chipped; I know of budgie breeders that show their 'top' birds are chipped.
Don't forget, the chip is about the size of a grain of rice!!

I know people who have chipped finches, so not really a worry with the size of birds we fly. I'd say the sooner the better in case of loss, but I'd also go with an IBR ring as well as it is visible.
My pet hate is people with chips who do not update the details if they move, or changs address etc., as this makes it pretty worthless, so please remember this.

The chip is about grain of rice size but the needle is bigger so the chip can fit in the barrel of the needle! Any sized bird can be chipped. I normally chip birds conscious but the smaller birds ie kestrel and smaller I prefer to knock out briefly with anaesthetic gas before implanting the chip.

I am pro chipping have always had me birds chipped. Never really thought about a good time as soon as I get me birds they get taken to me vet for a good check and it gets done then and Bobs your uncle. All mine had it in the chest and have been fine.

I know a few people dont like the idea but ive had no trouble or heard of any. But like SS have heard of many birds reunited due to it. Often think would the IBR list of found and non reunited birds be as long if people chipped and as RH said updated their details.

In theory, any bird or animal should be scanned if found; how long does it take...............?
