As a bit of a Newbie I don't know if this has been posted already so appologies if it has.
A website was recently brought to my attention that aims to focus on the persecution of Raptors in the Uk. It's run by a group of volunteers and is centred on a number of sites in one area of the Uk and mostly Pergrines.
Some of it make shocking reading, The things that people (for people it's possible to read Landowners and Game Keepers) are getting away with is incredible, coupled to the actions of the Police and seemingly the RSPB these birds seem to stand No chance of survival.
I've cut the following from a posting by one of the volunteers, I'm sure it'll spur many of you to visit the site and make you own comments:
For many years persecution has been going on and it nothing shy of heart breaking to say the least every time you revisit a site and find dead young, or full clutch of unhatched eggs... And somtimes dead/shot parent birds... But the most frustrating thing is bodies like the police and the RSPB should be being asked to do more about it... we as only a small group, (and a biased group at that is how they see us) don't seem to cut any head way with them...
Take 2008 figures... 53 eggs laid by 19 different pairs... but only 25 eggs produced young????? it works out at just a little over 47% success... out of that only 12 out of 20 possible pairs got fledged young. thats over all a success rate of 45%?????
Why are these figures alone not enough to get the police and RSPB into action... when other areas across the country have fledged success rates in the 90 - 100% bracket... bearing in mind that 45% success rate isn't a bad result for bowland... we've had years with fledged success rates as low as 0%...
Anyway, for the love that we all share for these birds, I say support this site.
