I keep a bird as long as it is performing well in the field or until it develops any bad habits that I am sure are not my fault.
Birds are for hunting, not pets.
If they are not good hunters (which some aren't) sell them to someone less demanding.

Brian M i'm bored today and atoo many glasses of wine!!!!!!!!
No i'm not an alcoholic.
Went up stairs to see what Kornie was up to . Trinity is sat at the bottom of his bed and he is wired up talking to someone in the US on xbox live.
Such a contrast to the thread of "people born before 1986" and do you know something! I know we hark back to the good old days but wow they are not all bad today and a part of me envies the kids of today.
Of course he is lucky to have a "right on mum"
And before people say kids are fat and don't take risks and are cosseted etc, mine are not. They are fit and sporty and sometimes I wish that my childhood could have been enriched with modern technology that allows us to interact like we do on this forum and have conversations with people all around the world.

Well, we cant all be like me...as much as we may try.
Trying to get the bloody hawk tame again. Think shes triyng to get one over on me. Maybe she needs a bit more man handling and roughing up to show her whos boss
Anyway I am looking forward to america getting me red tail. They release them and train different ones every year. New challenge every year.
Well said PC Hay, I get what your saying :)

I think not!

When you go to the USA will you have to go through the full apprenticeship before you can keep a bird again?
If you do then it must annoy you a bit surely!
Going through an apprenticeship would irritate the hell out of me :x

On the contrary Blackbird. Capturing a passage Red Tail/American kestrel IS part of your apprenticeship of 2 years. You need to apply for an apprentice licence. Before you can do that though you need to pass a written exam gaining over 80% in it. Exam covers eveything from state law, medicine, basic handling and training methods. etc. etc. And obtain a sponser.

I am aware of the american apprenticeship content Kornie. Perhaps I could have worded my question better, What I was asking was do you have to go down that road or not.
I take it that you do?
Do you find this irritating?

I take up a fresh eyas,or have done since flying falcons! Satisfy my curiosity i guess, they are usually passed on in late jan, early feb to give there new falconer some insight! I am satisfied now with what bird would suit my situ best,my next falcon will hopefully stay with me!

If he was under 18 he would have to start as an apprentice. You have to be 18 to be upgraded to General.

I obtain a new hawk every year, sometimes eyas sometimes passage. I train,I hunt, I release. Or if Captive bred I give them away. Hawks are not pets, nor are they little gods in feathered jackets. The fun is in the training for me.

Surley the bird can be developed and carry on learning, becoming a more confident and accomplished hunter in successive seasons. Just a thought:confused:
