i was reading the last few pages of the last updated version of philip glasier's rip book falconry and hawking
when he was invited to arabia and they took him out and were using sakers to hunt hoboura's and the saker was chasing after the houbara and got lost and even after 2 days philip didnt hear if they found her
and they didnt use telemetry then
i was thinking, in the old days when their was no such thing as telemetry did they imprint the falcons to get them used to the falconer so it will fly back or not go too fast or is it the falcons nature its def gonna shoot so far chasing the prey and may be lost
how many falconers have lost falcons in their lifetime
thanks

All the falcons flown then were wild caught birds, wither haggards or passagers, they did not raise falcons from chicks.
There was a ready supply of birds in the markets as replacements for when birds were lost.

.
Rather a sweeping statement!!! actually we DID raise falcons from chicks , ie EYASSES ( I never applied for or got a license for a peregrine , but did do so with both Kestrel and Merlin. SJ

Its not so long ago that hardly anyone bothered with telemetry.
I have only ever used mine with one bird and that was a waste of time as it was a harris!

You'd fit a transmitter to the leg in the same fashion as a leg bell i.e with a leather bewit. No need to alter the design of the tx into a ring.

Belt and braces, Moses! A well manned Harris at the right weight is not going to go very far. My FHH very often comes back to find me if she has lost a bunny and I've lost sight of her!

A well trained harris can go a long way when in pursuit of feather, if it catches it won't be coming back - you will be putting your walking boots on........

I wish! The best I have had is around 600 yards at a pair of mallard. If she had had her act together she might have taken one when they flushed.

It was an amazing flight to watch. She came straight back at over 400 yards on one call.
