View Full Version : How steady is your Raptor??

My little hawk never ceases to amaze me. Our cottage has basically become a war zone of builders and JCB's. I have three builders digging waste pipe trenches right across our lawn. Cody is sat on his bow perch with his foot up not phased at all. There are two JCBs tipping gravel from their buckets into the trenches while the builders shovel it in. He is no danger, is about 8/10 ft from them but is as steady as anything.
What other 'ridiculuous' situations have people manned their hawks to?
PS don't worry the builders are a couple of mates from the next cottage over :) :)

Had my imprint with me on site. At one point she was in a boiler room with fitters, electricians and builders all working around her. She wasn't impressed to start with but was soon taking no notice.

Goshawks were regularly imprinted in Berts time Ben. If you read between the lines of his superb treatise on hawks and hawking you come to understand this.
The only difference is that they did not have as good an understanding of how to do it and what could be achieved by refining the process.

He stays off this list as the company is not to his taste.
After the way he was badgered and attacked I cannot blame him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankfully we still correspond regularly by Email and also on another list so at least I have his vast experience to call upon.
Its a shame many others on this list cannot say the same!

I have sent him a few emails as well. Very very interesting bloke.
BB it was more along the lines of asking what Bert would say, because I think he would be mightly impressed at such stories of steady hawks and falcons :) :) :) Particularly the imprints and crech reared hawks.

You have a short memory. read back some of the posts and you will see that all the personal attacks came in my direction, the chap was unable to hold himself together when he was unable to answer questions about some of his wild statements, he also left UK Goshawkers for the same reason, also he has never imprinted a Goshawk, so not a lot of good to you with your Female imprint.
cheers

My mate works at a local airport and takes any new bird there daily and pegs them outside the hanger in full view of the runway nearby. They have always turned out very steady birds.

I will arrange a field meet this coming season, ask Derry to come,
i will pay for his petrol, accommodation, and his cap for the day, also if he kills something in the style like he describes his posts, then £20.00 per game bird killed.
not a bad offer is it,
let me know. :shock:

When traveling a Gos in the car how do you do it?
Mine sits on the passenger seat where your 4rse goes and she jumps up and down to look out of the windows
(She shat up my cream doorcard insert and I was not happy :( its the only piece of velour in the car and she hit the middle of it :x )

Hi BB
I have always boxed my females , they are a pain in the arse when loose, unless you plan to window hawk of course, then they need to be accustomed to traveling loose, also they make too much **** all over the car seats,

I suppose it is very different (once again) for a Harris. But generally speaking he is far calmer on a cadge in the car. I hood him, stick him on the cadge and off we go! The mutes are taken care of by buying a pants car.
However if it was a longer journey and hour or so I'd box him.

27-07-2005, 08:52 AM
What I would normaly do is remove the headrest from the front passenger seat and sit her on the top of the seat back hooded. however this is not practicable because A- the head rests in my new car cannot be removed(Bloody sweeds  ).
And B- I have now dispensed with the hood as she now sees me produce the lure anyway and to be honest there are a great many things that I find mandatory for a Gos that simply do not apply to an imprint 8)
note to self. The gulf of difference between an imprint spar and imprint gos is huge

Please explain further? Does this mean a Gos shouldn't be hooded if the lure is the sole re-call method? How does the production of a lure steady the Gos in a moving car?
Thanks
Ben

Ben,
You've gone off on a right tangent. Hooding was used to prevent the gos seeing BB presenting the food, but now it knows the food is on the lure and who's presenting the lure. The lure has nothing to do what so ever with a moving car.
Jim.

Aaah I THOUGHT that was a bit funny :) :) Honestly go back and read his statement(s) its not that clear to me. It sounds as if he doesn't use a hood and the Gos jumps up and down looking out the window.
HELP! :)

Ben,
She is only young, once use to riding in the car bareheaded it will become rock steady - UNTIL you fly her from it and she's successful then she will attempt anything flying by or on the hedges etc. Best to transport in a well made, well ventilated darken transport box.
Ben C
27-07-2005, 05:29 PM
So its all about flying FROM cars..................not just transporting them safely? :)
OutFlying
27-07-2005, 05:35 PM
:?: You'd struggle to fly it from a box. Once entered they are not very likely to remain steady in the car bare headed. Hooding imprint accipiters has proved to be one of the biggest causes of problems possible - so if your not going to hood it, it must use the box.
Ben C
27-07-2005, 05:39 PM
Well bloody hell, thats interesting. Why is hooding one of 'the biggest causes of problems'?
OutFlying
27-07-2005, 05:44 PM
Ben,
Buy the new Michael Mcdermott book (£50) thats describes problems and cures for the accipiter - it goes into great detail covering fear based problems caused in imprint accipiter when hooding has been applied.

OK I will. :) :)
How steady is your sparrowhawk?
Steady enough to fit the back pack without hooding, casting or drugs. She just sat on the glove while a friend did the fitting not bad for a spar.

Right OF........what colour socks do you like, and be DAMN SURE I WILL NOT fit em mate.
Thats the benchmark for a Spar then.........I'll let you know how I get on in mmmmmmmmmm 20 years time mate :) :)

So how do you make your bird "steady"?? And what exactly is "steady"??
I was talking to a bloke who knows someone with HHs whose kids can hug them. Is that steady?
Ben C
27-07-2005, 08:20 PM
Yep............that Harris is 'steady' towards kids :) But is it steady towards everything its likely to encounter in its life?
IMHO its a bit like double guessing your hawk....what is it likely to be scared of and how can you best show it that 'thing' without it bating?
Some clever clogs manage to man their hawks/falcons without them EVER bating :) :)

Thanks, am getting a better picture daily!

I tried that once and Cody flew at the window!!! Used a rabbit head the next time and he sat and ate that on the back seat. However the hood is much better by a LONG way :) :) :)
