I have heard great things about them mate, but i worry about easy access to a bath, as this would mean that the bird would need to be tethered by at least 4 ft of leash, if this were the case, then im affraid too much leg and joint damage could result from a bate!
Rem that it is more important to offer a bath in cold weather than it is in hot weather?
A screen perch has all of the advantages of this post, but still the same dissadvantages.
What's the prob with an ordinary Bow?
I could see the benefit for a delicate nervouse bird like a Gos or Spar but a HH would be fine on a bow.
Just my thoughts.

I use them for my HH after they have been flown. I allow them a bath first then put them up on the post to dry off and weather. If you have a batey bird you may find it far more relaxed at a higher level. If a bird does bate there is no danger of tail or primary damage from the ground.
I made my own from semi rigid 6" drainage pipe screwed down to a paving slab for weight. I only put astro on the top surface as I found that the astro on the sides could cause tail damage.
Falconry Originals are now selling them in all plastic and they also dismantle for transport.

Hate to rain on everyones parade, but if youve got a steady bird they
seem fine and , I have used one for manning a bird down .They're
great for having the bird on your level , BUT! I had one bird break
a load of secondries on it by bating in my absence. I would never
leave a bird alone on one again.

I thought i did have postal insurance when they asked me for £15.00 pounds but it turns out they only payed £9.20. Royal Mail have sent me £30.00 back but i rang them and said that was not good enough. So now Dave who supplies the post is sorting it out. So we will have to wait and see. I'am using a friend's at the moment.

surprised you are after one Lee?? thought you used the poles similar to don?
these were for sale at the fair if you remember for £50. Personnaly i didnt think they were tall enough. the idea for these as Varmit and Hawka said is for the more nervous bird to allow easier manning. these are only about wist height the nervous more flyty birds are put more at ease about your shoulder height.

Some interesting comments guys but sounds like more are for them rather than against.
I know some of you think they only need to be used with a bird that is bating a lot,but wouldn't it be better as a preventative to any feather damage and nervousness by using instead of the bow.
Has anybody got pic's of there home made ones

01-08-2005, 05:20 PM
yep a tall block bb it does take a lot of stress away from the bird when manning ... it the pic with my little one on the swing was after afew weeks on it..its supprising how quickley they settle ive used it for hh and gos worked every time.... as for bathing after the hunting day let her bath then back up to the safety of a high pole... 8)

I wouldnt use a block with a shortwing as this overstretches the tendons in the feet. Grip is diminished over time because of this stretching.
Argueably a good thing in a p/r female destined for breeding but no good for hunting hawks. IMHO
Good innovation all the same.

i have disagree with you to a point bb when ever the gos is on the post they always sit on the edge as they would on a tree goses in the wild dont sit for long periods on a branches that there toes go all the way round they tend to stand at rest on larger branches i agree with you if they were on then for long periods but there always removed at night obviously during hunting and bathing but point taken 8)

one other thing bb the good thing with the post the bird can lay down with no possible tail damage as with a bow perch when they lay on the floor imo

I suppose whan I have a problem with what I use I will have to look at alternatives.

falconry originals also do a 'raptor post' seen it at the CLA i wasnt to keen it doesnt have any astroturf around the top of the shank when asked he said the turf over time causes feather damage i have never come across this also i thought it helps the bird grip to turn when she baits. the falconry originals one only has a short spike and not a base like the raptor originals type

Could someone give me a little advice on the post perch that I am trying to make at the moment?
This is a picture of the post is this roughly how the holes should be placed?
I am going to position them to allow plenty of length of leash to be tied.
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/5716/dscn1889quest1jo.th.jpg (http://img360.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1889quest1jo.jpg)
This one is asking hoe far down should the astro turf go down the post?
Also will the size of the top be ok?
I understand that the jesses need to be shorter than the diameter of the top but if he was to bate would he still be able to regain the post?
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/5093/dscn1886quest2oq.th.jpg (http://img360.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1886quest2oq.jpg)
this next one is asking should I make the center hole a little larger to allow the swivel to sit into the post or should it rest on the top?
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1056/dscn1888quest6xz.th.jpg (http://img360.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1888quest6xz.jpg)
thanks in advance for any advice ;-)
p.s. using the diagram in above posts, I could only find 10cm pipe should the measurements be in cm? hence 11cm diameter top instead of 11inch top?

Make the holes closer to the top, this gives you more leash to work with.
I never used astro turf under the platform and I see no reason for it now that I am using it either.
You can also just round off those edges and rubberise the platform as I did and it is better than astroturf.
The hole must be small so the swivel does not go in and not be able to still turn and complete its function. I aslo dropped in a stainless sleeve to prevent wearing on the wood, Finnish can maybe let us know what they are called.
