Just doing a little thinking and came up with this.
Anyone know what the gripping strength is for the birds we deal with and which one has the strongest?
sort of wondering like pounds/inch of force in the feet and which bird it is that has that rating?

good post mate perhaps some one on here may have the answers to your questions another one is which bird has the strongest grip in comparison to its size ie has a sparrow hawk a better gripping power than say a kestral of similar size to it

I have read that owls have the greatest gripping power - a great horned owl is supposed to have similar strength to eagles (supposedly the same as four adult men!). Hawks have more gripping strength than falcons. All to do with when and how they kill.

The Monkey-eating Eagle, Pithecophaga jefferyi, is a forest eagle of the Philippines. It has remarkably strong legs and an extremely deep and compressed bill. It is about 3 feet tall with a 6-1/2 foot wingspan. It weighs about 14 pounds. The average life expectancy is anywhere from 30 to 60 years.
This Eagle has the most powerful grip of all BOP..... I will try and find some pics of its feet......they are BIG and the talons are just incredible...I suppose they have to be if you eat primates :)

Maybe a little off thread, but what about beak power, just amongst the birds we use, got a little nick off the falcon last week (!) which made my eyes water, but think we might struggle to beat a parrot!!

Crowned eagles are bloody strong, the strongest grip in african raptors.
It is hard to calculate the psi pressure as it depends on the sharpness of the talon as this is where it meets it's prey. A crowned eagle with a sharp talon could produce 7000 psi on the skull of a primate as it is enough to crush it and enter the skull. Just as it could enter a human skull. If the back talon was slightly blunter the psi would be reduced considerably as there is more surface area and not as much pressure to enter the bone.

Falcons tend to do more damage with the beak than hawks.
But at the end of the day, As with all raptors its just a knife and fork.
Its strange how the layman does not realize this and nine times out of ten will ask "Does it bite".

Not so interesting considering the bird is now exticnt but the Haast's eagle of New Zealand (thought to still exist up until approx. 500 years ago) would of had incredible power in its feet, it was capable of taking the giant moa.
here this Haasts's eagles leg bones with a Lesser Fishing Eagle's leg bones to compare them :D

for one they are my fav animals, the deadliest living raptor
avg wght for males 10.5lbs, females15-18 they have massive feet and are super strong can fly at 50+mph in rainforests in a serious chase and prey mainly on tamanduas, tree porcupines, and opposums when they are juvenile and as adults they prey on these and sloths, monkeys, cats, dogss, goats, deer, and macaws

I found these pictures of the harpy on someones blog (http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/blog/archive/2005_10_01_archive.html)
A quote from the blog article:
"In the first photo the bird is at ease on Neil's arm.
In the second photo, a small child--a monkey-sized toddler if you will--entered the room. This got the harpy eagle's attention!"
Look at the size of that rear talon!!

what about the martial eagle? are they one of the more powerful ones? I wonder does a martial eagle have larger tallons the amazing golden eagle?
Golden eagle is DEF up there when it comes to most powerful eagles!!!
Martial eagles reg prey on full grown monitor lizards which I think is much more impressive then preying on monkey
anyone that has hel a tiny baby monitor lizard will know how powerful and strong these lizards are even if they are less then a foot long!
THinking of a bird eating a five foot one is truley amazing!

but is a monitor as fast and agile as a monkey? course montitors have tougher skin and can give nasty tail lashes and a martial can kill a young baboon

not agility we are talking pure power gripping power

monitors do have nasty teeth and very sharp claws even oras(komodo dragons) who u would expect to have blunt claws and of course theres the tough scaly skin and the tail lash, dont mess with the tail, but monkeys are pretty impressive i guess it depends on the falconer and the birds abilities

Spike (our male Euro Eagle Owl) Has a very powerful grip for a bird that comes in at the 5lb mark. But at a guess I'd say Harpy or African crowned has the strongest.

does anyone have references or info relating to actual statistics regarding the crushingpower? i must agree that the harpy, P/monkey eating eagle and crowned are the top of the list but any scientific research done on them? and if anyone has worked with these spcies they will know full well what it feels like to have your arm crushed by these tallons. i have worked with an imprint female crowned before and it is no joke when they decide to give you a taste of their grip. stats please would be nice!
good hawking
