It's been a very long time I know, but a lot has happened to me in the past year; anyway I've picked up Kira yesterday from a good friend in Somerset, who has free lofted her and moulted her out for me. She was weighing 2lb 10 fat weight approx a month ago, and the chap who was looking after her for me has gradually dropped he weight to 2lb 2 (ish). I put her out on the bowperch today, and she's jumping the length of the leash instantly and hitting the glove with real vigour. I will try to keep you updated on her progress over the forthcoming season but it will be a bit hit and miss as I'm just about to move up to Scotland and I need to find my feet up there. Anyway hopefully attached is a picture i took just now.

Kira is doing pretty good this season, her manners are very good on kills and she's well mannered when picking her up off a kill. To date we've had 11 kills, and she seems to be enjoying life up here in Scotland. The pic below is one i took the other week with my mobile on her fifth kill on land where I'm renting a cottage.

A photo from the other week that I took on my mobile, this was taken up the main drive to the estate where I rent a cottage here in Scotland, and I had to retrieve gos and rabbit from under some Rhododendrums:lol: So yes it meant me on my hands and knees in the undergrowth, David Bellamy eat your heart out:rolleyes:
Flown Kira today, she was a bit high in weight, but still fairly responsive and keen to fly the pheasants that were feeding round and about the setaside fields here, just tried to snatch the food off the glove, but also had a friend over to see her fly so I had an idea that she wouldn't be her usual self. But she still is quite well mannered on the glove walking about and very keen, head bobbing and head feathers up. Back to work tomorrow, so will see if I can get a kill there with her. I will try and take some more pics and post later.

Been out with the gos all this week, and she's been unfortunate that she hadn't caught anything. She flew a rabbit here at the cottage on Thursday with determination and wome speed, unfotunately she flew through a fence to reach the rabbit and this hindered her and gave the rabbit advantage. I braved the rain and wind yesterday with Kira and my dog and went around the estate for over an hour and got cold and wet and we didn't see a thing to fly at, so after nearly two hours i called it a day. Been back to work today and the seagulls haven't been in very much at all, so I decided i'd fly her on the ground next to the main gates into the site, which consists of a couple of mounds of earth and then an area of long grass. The dog went and bumped a rabbit and Kira nailed it by the head. Fed her the liver and heart of the rabbit and picked her up, i was going to call it quits as the light was beginning to go, but my dog was pointing down on the side of the mounds and I walked the gos down towards the area of grass, Kira left the glove and flew out across the grass and then dived into the long grass. Rabbit number two was nailed. Pics taken with camera phone again so sorry for bad quality.

It is going to be bad weather, I just know it, but had another pretty good day today with Kira. Another two kills, first being a cock pheasant and second a rabbit. Cock pheasant was nothing to write home about as basically I stepped out of the hut at work, and went into the weathering to pick up Kira to go and fly at some seagulls (not that there have been many in today), and she was bating like a nutter, out of the corner of my eye I saw my gsp run past with a cock pheasant in her mouth, told her to leave it, which she promptly did, it ran off across the car park and out past the weigh bridge, so I picked Kira up and watched the pheasant run out through the main gates, it didn't seem to be able to fly and it really didn't look very with it, so not being one to let things suffer, I cast Kira off at it, and she latched onto very quickly. So dispacthed it and gave her a small feed on it.
I then picked Kira up again around 2ish this afternoon, and walked up across the landfill, she left the glove and banked up over the mound of rubbish, the rooks and starlings all went up and Kira ended up the far side of the landfill. Walked down to her, and then went out across the stretch of grass back towards the weigh bridge, the dog was working the grass and flushed one rabbit, but Kira had spotted a rabbit bolting up the side of a mound of earth beside the main gates into the landfill, she left the glove and powered up the side of the bank, I watched thinking she's never going to get that before it gets into a hole. Squealing noise from rabbit, meant me running across and up the bank with dog in hot pursuit, reached Kira who had a firm hold or rabbit who was half in a hole, so I pulled the rabbit out and dispatched it and gave her a feed on this. All in all not a bad day, plus I remembered I actually had my comapct camera with me on both occasions, so hopefully the pics should be a bit better for you.

Been out this afternoon with the dog and gos, haven't had any kills today so no pictures unfortunately.
Walked up the back drive from the cottage up towards the road and went in through a gate out into a large field which is setaside, but has reeds and areas that are very wet. on the far side of this large field is a fenced area which has trees running down through it and then a stone wall and another fence, on the other side of which is pasture with sheep and cattle in it. Walked into the field and got my dog to work the reeds, kira left the glove and went up into a tree above a very wet area, so I made my way across to her and called her back to the glove. We then made are way parallel with the fence the far side and the dog was working the edge of the fence, up gets a brown hare which promptly goes into the tree'd area, Kira is off after it like a shot flies over the fence and chases it up through the trees over the stone hedge and out into the field where the sheep and cattle are grazing. When get into the field (after negotiating the barbed wire, which seems to have an attraction to my legs:rolleyes: ) I find Kira sat on the floor and call her back to the glove. I then go back into the setaside field (as i've not really got permission to be on the land with the sheep). Again the dog works the fence line, she bumps yet another brown hare, which runs about 30 feet and squats in the grass, Teal goes on point and Kira has left the glove as she's the hare squat, she approaches it with some speed throws up and dives into the grass, the hare breaks and Kira sits on the ground for a split second and then gets up and flies in earnest after the hare which arks round to the right and heads for the trees, Kira is right behind it the whole way and flies between the strands of the fence, the hare jinks and makes it escape through the trees and out of sight. I recall Kira and we make our way further up the field towards the A68, I start to make my way across the field and towards the main house of the estate, with the dog working back and forth in front. Teal starts to slow up and holds a hesitant point, but again she gets too close and another hare gets up and breaks cover. Again Kira leaves the glove, the dog comes back to my side and I watch as the hare makes for a gateway and some rhododendrums, Kira is again gaining on it the whole way and as her feet come out to grab the hare it just makes the cover of the rhododendrums.:( Oh well you win some you loose some, another day prehaps she'll have more joy.

Been out as much possible over the last week with my goshawk. Including going out for an hour and a half last Wednesday in the pouring rain, seeing absolutely nothing to fly at and resulting in myself, my dog and Kira all getting soaked through. She is still keen to fly the brown hares here at the cottage and on Thursday I got to the top of one of the fields here and Kira left the glove to sit up in a tree by a gateway into a neighbouring field, so I got my dog to work the ground which is wet in patches, Teal worked back and forth and a brown hare got up and started to run down the field, I went to shout to Kira, but didn't need to as she had already spotted the hare and she'd left the tree. The hare was a fair way down the field and away from the tree that Kira was in, but she really put on a spurt and gained on the hare very quickly, the hare increased it's speed and Kira matched it and was almost on top of it when the hare suddenly ducked and stopped with Kira overshooting it and landing in the grass, the hare then got up and made it's escape. So near yet so far, but she'll get one soon I'm sure.
Been to a field meet locally to me on Saturday, first slip I had and she flies a woodpecker down across a stream over a fence and out into a neighbouring field:oops:  I regain her in a small patch of trees in the field, with the woodpecker being long gone across the other side of the valley. My second slip I opted to have a go at some ducks that were feeding on a flooded part of a field, she flew over the hedge and aimed at the ducks, but they didn't lift from the water and she bailed out and landed in a tree. My final slip was in some trees running parallel to the road where we had met. I walked along side the gamekeeper and Kira bated to leave the glove but i couldn't see what she was bating at so held her back, when I looked further down I could see a cock pheasant in by a tree, Kira had seen it too, so I let her go and she flew down between the trees and aimed for the pheasants, 3 pheasants got up and flew out across the road and walked down and picked Kira up who was sat on the hedge. Some of the others in the group were stood on the road and said that there was still on pheasant in the cover, walked towards a dip in amongst the trees and there was a cock pheasant nestling in against a tree, cast Kira towards it and the pheasant got up and flew up over the mound out across the road and into a large drive with double iron barred gates, Kira was off after it like a shot, up over the bank and across the road. I lost sight of both the pheasant and my gos as I was down in the dip, but the next thing i heard was everyone going "oooohhhh!". When I got to the road the others were saying that Kira had flown between the bars and only just made it through the gap as they were somewhat close together. I got to the gates and Kira was sat on the floor on the other side of the gates (no pheasant in sight), picked her up and called it a day.
Took Kira to work yesterday, and picked her up around 1pm, walked out of the main gates and headed towards some rough land, put the dog into the cover immediately in front of me, but Kira was eyeing up something the far side of the mounds. She left the glove, flew across the mounds, flew between some strands of wire of a fence, and ploughed onto a rabbit. Picture attached below (remebered to take it with my camera as well), fed her a bit of that and then went on and had a slip at some gulls, but the wind had picked up so much that even i was struggling to stand up, so flying her after that would be asking for an accident, so I called it quits and returned to the weigh bridge.

Well had the last two days off work, and taken the oppurtunity to go out for 2-3 hours both days with my dog and goshawk.
Went out yesterday and entered some woods which is a mixture of decidious and conifers, the cover is now dying back which is making life a lot easier for myself and gos. Kira left the glove and perched herself up in tree and i worked the dog below her, didn't see anything in the woods, but suddenly Kira left her tree flew out of the wood and out into the neighbouring field and bowed sharply round to the right, completely lost sight of her, so went out of the wood and into the field, had no idea where she was out with the telemetry, signal was all over the place bouncing off the trees, so turned it right down and had a faint signal, turned it off and headed towards where the signal was coming from, gave her a whistle and could hear her bells, next thing she was flying back to my glove. Decided to move out into the set aside and worked my dog down through the wooded area to the side of the setaside field, as I approached a steep that leads down to a stream, Kira left the glove and perched in one of the beech trees on my left. I went down to cross the stream, and as I did so a cock pheasant broke cover from within the tree'd area and flew over the top of my head and out into the field, Kira then left the tree and again flew over my head and out after the pheasant. I completely lost sight of both birds as i was down the bank and stepping across the stream. Got up the other bank and looked out in the field, couldn't see any sight of either birds, and the dog seemed to be staying close to me. Out with the telemetry again, again signal all over the place, so i made my way down with the stream into the field, as before called Kira, heard her bells and called her again and she returned to the glove. The wind was picking up again and i'd been out for a good 2hours plus so I called it quits.

Today Kira same weight as yesterday 2lb 3.5 exactly, went up the lane from the cottage and worked my dog through the rhododendrums, but nothing in there at all. Out into the setaside field, Kira left the glove and flew across the field towards the trees the far side. Made my way across and put the dog into the fenced off area, Kira left her tree and flew up the tree line towards me, I saw one rabbit running up along the hedge the far side of the fenced off area, but she pulled up in flight threw up and dived down into some cover within the trees, climbed the fence and made my way in towards her. She had a rabbit by the head, so dealt with that and gave her a small feed on it. Picked her up and walked on again. Crossed the stream and up the far side of the setaside field, some very dense cover is fenced off at the top and is lined with more trees, again Kira went up into the trees, put the dog into the cover, she slowed up, then a cock pheasant broke and flew out towards me and out across the field; Kira either didn't see it or just wasn't interested as she just sat there in the tree.:x  Called her out of the tree and made my way into the woods that I'd tried yesterday. Again Kira left the glove and found a vantage point in one of the trees, I made my way down the steep bank with my dog and down towards yet another stream:roll: a rabbit shot out from behind me, Kira left her tree and came towards me but the rabbit had gone into some fallen trees. Put my dog into work the wood but no joy. Recalled Kira to the glove and made my way out of the wood and into the field. Worked my dog on the right hand side but Kira was on the glove watching the left side being the field. Headed up the long field and kira bated, held her back as I couldn't see what she had seen, looked again and saw the flash of a rabbits tail at the far end of the field, she was gone, flying up the length of the field, the rabbit was heading for cover, and she really didn't look like she was gaining on it, I saw the rabbit make some cover and saw Kira turn sharpely to the left and dive into the cover. Again I thought no chance, and again she had me running up the field as I could hear the rabbit squealing. Eventually got myself into the cover and dealt with the rabbit and fed Kira a bit of it. I continued back up round the fields and my dog put up a hen pheasant which flew back towards myself and Kira, Kira left the glove but she went round the wrong side of a tree, as the pheasant went the other side of it. Decided to call it quits as Kira was pretty full on her feeds, and we'd been out for 3 hours again. A few pics below.

Very much alive and kicking, haven't had many kills this past week or so, basically due to some pretty awful weather:x Managed to catch yet another rabbit with Kira last weekend, another long flight across a field and connected with rabbit at the top of a steep bank, but that's about it, I've flown her a couple of times at work this week but the gulls are near impossible to get a decent slip at now as they now know myself and Kira too well:roll: I slipped her today at a number of gulls and rooks at the cell where the guys were tipping rubbish, she left the glove and banked round to the left of the cell (the gulls fly in that direction to head back out to sea) but the crows mobbed her and she landed on one of the banks of earth the far side of the cells. Unfortunately a very heavy shower came across during this time and by the time I got back to the car myself and Kira were soaked through. A photo I took at lunchtime today of Kira on the glove, not brilliant as I was taking the photo single handed and gos on left hand. Oh and yes the sun came out then as well:rolleyes:
I intend in going hawking tomoz as I have the day off work, so with a bit of luck I should have something to post about.

Thought I'd better update this before Christmas:oops: Not a great deal to report as the weather has been pretty awful over the last week, very strong winds and rain to boot as well. Actually managed to get out with Kira twice this week haven't seen a huge amount but my gsp is working very nicely now. Walked up the lane from the cottage the other day and Teal (gsp) was trotting on in front and then went on point by a large tree and a gate into the setaside field, I steadied her and she held her point until I got myself and Kira in position the other side of the tree, put Teal in and a rabbit bolted up against the lane inside the setaside field, Kira left the glove and flew up after it. I entered the field and picked Kira up, she was sat on the floor grasping a tuft of grass, the rabbit had obviously made cover in against the hedge.
Second time I got out this week and left it a lot a later in the day went out at 2.30pm, had had a frost and plenty of scent, walked out through the setaside and worked Teal through the wet patches where there are lots of reeds, she went on point, steadied her up walked in slowly to her and two hen pheasants got up, one went straight on Kira left the glove to pursue the first pheasant but as she went to fly that the second pheasant got up and flew in front of her and bowed round to the left, Kira peeled off the first pheasant and threw up under the second pheasant feet came out to bind to it, but the hen put on a bit more speed and headed towards my cottage, Kira carried on after it, across the lane past my cottage and out through the trees. I eventually tracked her with the receiver up in some trees and rhododendrums by the main house, no pheasant, but one cracking flight.:) Sorry no photo's, too busy watching my dog and gos to take photo's.

Nothing really much to say, picked Kira up Thursday after her jollies down at FHF whilst I returned South for Christmas. Still reckon you fed her turkey FHF as she was a little over weight:yawinkle: I flew her at work yesterday and she had a good slip at the gulls, but the wind had picked up somewhat and she hadn't been flown for 10 days so couldn't expect too much. Got somewhat bored today, and decided that i'd brave the weather and go out here around the cottage with Kira and my dog. Walked down through a strip of trees and a cock pheasant flew out into the field, kira left the glove and pursued the pheasant across the field over the top of the pine trees at the far end of the field, and out of sight. Made my way down towards the pine trees just got the receiver out to track her and she flew up through the pine trees back towards me and landed in a tree just in front of me, called her down to the glove and moved out across to the neighbouring field. Hadn't gone far and Kira bated, I looked ahead and glimpsed a hare, she bated again and i left her go. She flew over the fence and up through the trees, the hare went over the hedge into the field and headed up towards the A68, kira followed but pulled up and returned to the trees, which i was quite relieved about as there was quite a bit of traffic on the road. Also the wind had picked up again and it was raining properly by then. Called it quits after that, will have another go tomoz.

Been out very rarely since Christmas due to the horrendous winds that we've been getting of late, I've managed to fly Kira at work over the weekend and although she's been very keen she's been unfortunate and not had any joy with the seagulls, she flies them well but they just see her and are away before I can get anywhere near close enough to slip her at them:( She had a good flight at some partridges on Sunday and flew them up across the earth mounds at the far end of the landfill, but they bailed into a field being grazed by sheep and Kira returned back towards myself. I then worked my gsp in through some gorse bushes and she went on point I got into position on a bit of embankment (where youngsters have been riding their motorcycles), got the dog to flush the rabbit which shot off in front of myself and Kira, Kira ploughed through a gorse bush to get to it but unfortunatly the rabbit had made the hole before Kira engaged with it. Walked on again a rabbit shot out across some rushes to my right, Kira left the glove and ploughed onto the rabbit, making it squeal, as I ran into the rabbit and the gos, Kira got kicked off and the rabbit made it's escape into some very dense gorse bushes. I picked Kira up and made my way back to the car.
Been out today in and around the cottage, walked up round the side of the main house here, and a grey squirrel ran out in front of us, Kira left the glove but was never going to catch it, she went up into one of the beech trees and the dog bumped a pheasant, Kira left her perch and flew through the trees and out into the field but the pheasant had gone into the woods. I regained Kira and we walked out into the field and headed down into the field where there is a small pond (see my post My hunting land for picture), as we approached 20 odd mallard got up and flew out across the field, Kira flew after them but was not committed enough and peeled off and sat in a tree to my left. I then decided that I'd head back towards the bit of land I normally hawk here. Got to the set aside field where there is a fenced off area of trees and dense undergrowth (this normally holds pheasants in all weathers), put the dog in and immediately she went on point, worked my way up towards her from in the field, told her to flush and a hen pheasant got up and peeled round to the left out of the trees and out into the field the far side, Kira was off after like a fired gun, she gained on it very well whilst flying through the trees and as I watched her fly across the field the distance between the two was shortening, but the pheasant pitched into the conifer plantation the far side and Kira obviously lost sight of it, as when I got round to the conifers she was sat in one of the trees.
Onwards again, back to where the pheasant had got up from, walked a bit further on and another hen pheasant got up, this time it banked out into the set aside field and Kira again flew off after it, the pheasant went up over some scots pine trees and Gos shot down through a gateway to the left of the trees, as the pair came out the far side kira was flying up under the hen, again the pheasant found more speed and powered up alongside the conifer plantation, Kira kept going after it. I was thinking here we go again, i'm going to have to trudge over there and retrieve her again:roll: so gave her a whistle and to my amazement she turned round and flew straight back towards the trees where i was. Called her down and moved on round again, Teal was working the rushes and suddenly stopped, as she did so a cock pheasant got up immediately in front of us, again Kira left the glove and pursued the pheasant but as the pheasant started to bank up over the trees Kira Bailed out. She had ended up in one of the beech trees West side of the field parallel with the A68, decided that it was probably time to call it quits as we'd been out for nearly 2.5 hrs but as I approached the tree Kira left it and started to fly out in towards the field and was gaining speed, suddenly she dropped onto a fleeing rabbit, that was going h£ll for leather down along the side of the stream, she missed her footing and the rabbit got up and ran again, Kira got up and pursued it further and this time nailed it by the head, I made sure I was there as fast as possible this time, didn't want a repeat of Sunday. Gave Kira a decent feed on the warm rabbit, and also gave my dog, once back at the cottage, some of the rabbit as well as she had worked well today . Photo's attached.

Today I was supposed to be having a go at the rabbits with FHF and her ferrets here on the land round the cottage, but due to very strong winds and rain we've re arranged to have a go at the rabbits next weekend. It did stop raining mid morning just to really annoy me:x so I put Kira out in the garden to weather, by lunch time I was getting itchy feet to go hawking, so 2 o'clock I thought sod it I'm off out with the dog and Kira. Walked up the lane and the wind was still pretty strong so headed for a small clump of trees just next to the lane, my dog put out a hen pheasant immeadiatly and Kira left the glove and flew through the trees, but as the pheasant made for the open fields Kira bailed out and perched in one of the trees. I decided that I'd brave the winds and went out into the set aside field, got my dog to work the rushes and she went on a steady point, approached her and got to flush a cock pheasant broke and flew out with Kira in pursuit but the wind was pretty strong so Kira pitched onto the floor. Decided that I'd be better off going up past the stable block and main house and out into the field where the pool is. Crept up on the pool and 15 mallard got up and flew down into the valley, again Kira flew them and for a minute it looked like she was gaining on them but again the wind caused her to turn and return to the glove. Continued down to where the rabbits have ground warrens and was quietly spitting as I could see the little so and so's sat on the entrances of the warrens (We'll have a crack at them next weekend FHF!!!:supz: ) Decided to head back long to the house as the wind wasn't easing at all, Kira bated but I held on to her, she was bating at a brown hare the far end of the field but she wouldn't of stood a chance as the hare was right on the edge of cover. As I got back towards the cottage Teal went on point on the edge of the lane, so I approached her and just I did so a hen pheasant got up flew up the field with Kira behind it out across the lane into the next field, the hen pheasant was motoring and heading towards the trees of the main house, so Kira peeled off it and suddenly piled into some rushes, she missed a hen pheasant which got up and flew down towards the main house (just where the other hen had gone) to my amazement Kira got up and pursued the second hen. I was in a bit of dilemma as to which was the best way to retrieve Kira and opted to go back down the lane and cut behind the cottage through some trees. Got level with my cottage and Kira was in a tree to the left of me, went to call her and she flew towards me and suddenly pitched over the main house garden wall and 4 pheasants got up and flew upto the main house. I ran through my garden and shot through the gate into the main house garden and regained Kira who was perched on the far wall. Decided that after being out for two hours that it was probably time to call it quits, especially as the light was beginning to fade; but although we didn't have any kills i got some good flights and both the dog and gos were worked/exercised.:)

Well the weather has actually bucked up a tad today, and FHF managed to come up to my place, and brought her ferrets with her as well as her camera. Her Ferruginous was over weight, and Kira was overweight by a good oz, but decided that we’d head off for the ground warrens on the land here next to my cottage. It was dry, sunny and a bit of a breeze but not bad considering the weather we’ve been experiencing up here. I got myself in position top side of the first warren, and FHF put one of the ferrets in a hole, waited a wee while and rabbit bolted and Kira left the glove but the rabbit dived into a near by hole. Kira continued on up the hill across the stream and ended up in a tree, so I walked across and regained her. Met up with FHF again at the same warren, ferret in the hole again, a few minutes pass and a rabbit bolts, runs down the embankment, across some rushes with Kira on it’s tail, she went to foot it and the rabbit jinked and turn up the hill, Kira got up and flew up into a tree and saw the rabbit heading for another warren at the top of the hill and purused it again, missing it as it went into the warren. Regained Kira, and we moved onto another warren a little further down the stream, another rabbits bolts and kira flies off after, but we are on quite a steep piece of land and she lifted in the strong breeze and headed off to the far side of the field and landed high up in a tree. I went to regain and she had moved completely out of sight. Shouted to FHF that I was heading up the hill as a signal was coming from across the valley, she was going to net the holes and get a rabbit for her hawk. So I trudged up the field and got to the top of valley and signal was coming from within the trees, jumped another fence and headed through the woods and got to the brow of a very steep gully, I could hear squealing and bells, peered down into the gully lined with trees but couldn’t see anything, dropped all my gear at the top and very gingerly made my way down the near vertical gully. More squealing and bells, which were getting louder as I made my way down, I then spyed Kira on a fair sized rabbit that was giving her a real tussle, made my way across to Kira and managed to dispatch the rabbit, without slipping down the gully. Shouted to FHF, who I could just make out at the top of the gully. This is after the swearing I’d been doing at my gos for catching a rabbit in such a steep area, as well as not letting me see the flight! Well I eventually made it up the top with gos and rabbit. Below are some photo’s of myself, and the bit when FHF found me approaching the top of the gully with Kira and rabbit (laughing my head off by then mind), also a few pics to show the steepness of the gully, although the one of me feeding kira shows a bit of how steeply it drops behind me. FHF had managed to net a rabbit for her hawk, and we decided to call It day, especially as the weather had turned to rain, and then snow as we made our way back to the cottage. A somewhat interesting day, with some laughs and somewhat on the edge (literally) drama.
Thanks for ferreting FHF, I’ll make sure my gos is on weight next time and also that we’re not going to get snow showers.
Picture with red square shows you where I was when FHF first saw me retrieving gos and rabbit.

Despite the weather it was a good day. The ferrets worked well, and the second flight we had was a really good one! :supz: The last warren I netted as it was only 6 holes and well used, after alot of thumping out popped the rabbit. As I was sorting all this out, I heard Sarah say she was going up the hill, but by the time all was sorted there was no sign! I trudged up the hill and into the forest shouting "Sarah". Initially I heard nothing, until, finally I heard a shout from her - half way down a cliff!! The photos dont do it justice, it was STEEP!!!!

Still a great day out, 2 bunnies in the bag and a great laugh!! Thanks Sarah!

Been out this weekend around the cottage and on the land here, dropped Kira’s weight as she was very high last Sunday. I would of flown her at work but unfortunately the days that it was not too windy, there were no gulls. Went out for a couple of hours here yesterday, walked up the lane and my gsp went on point in the middle of the lane pointing towards the fence of the set aside field. I looked to where she was pointing and moved in slowly and sat in the long grass was a cock pheasant, he got up and flew down towards my house and Kira left the glove and decided that she didn’t want to fly it and peeled off and perched in one of the pine trees. Called her down and made my way across the set aside field, wind was picking up so headed for the woods the other side of the field. Worked the dog through the woods and suddenly a brown hare got up from my left hand side, kira left the glove and flew after it through the trees, the hare slowed up and Kira pitched down to bind to it, and narrowly missed it. Continued down through the woods, and another brown hare broke and shot out into the field but it was a long way ahead of us so I held Kira back. Continued on through the woods, and out the other side of the valley, but didn’t see anything else, apart from 3 roe deer that jumped out of the woods into the field where we were.
Decided to go out a bit later today, and Kira was meaning business, head feathers up, and anything that moved she was hooked onto. Went up the lane towards the main house and Teal went on point, as I came round the corner there was a cock pheasant stood in the middle of the drive. Kira saw it and flew down after it, but the pheasant dived into the rhododendron bushes and Kira threw up and perched in the tree above where the pheasant had made cover. I sent Teal in to flush the pheasant out, who promptly came out the far side, Kira left her perch and pitched on to the pheasant and footed it, pulling out a load of feathers, went into dispatch the pheasant but it broke free of Kira’s grip and flew off out across the main house. Regained Kira and went on down into the field where the duck pond is, there were about 5 mallards but Kira spied a rabbit and flew across the field after it. Again she missed and threw up into a tree, as I made my way towards her, a brown hare got up and dived into the undergrowth below kira, She again left her perch and pitched onto the hare again footing it, but after a bit of a tussle the hare got away, and I regained kira with nothing more than hare fur in her talons.
Continued on round to the set aside fields and didn’t see very much at all, so started to walk down the land back towards the cottage, Kira spied something in the paddock to my left and left the glove and followed the stream running down through the paddock towards the main drive and disappeared behind a bank. Next thing I could hear squealing, jumped the fence, and ran down across the paddock, down over the bank, jumped the stream to find Kira one side of a wooden fence across the stream, with one of her feet attached to the rear end of a rabbit which was the other side of the fence, trying to make it’s escape across the stream, squealing like a pig! Grabbed the rabbit, and quickly dispatched it, and gave Kira a good feed of warm flesh.
:) You can see the wooden fence and stream in the photo's:roll:

No photo's as I've had one kill over the last few days, I would of posted yesterday but my exchange was down and I couldn't access the net at all. The weather has been absolutely fantastic, glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze, so been out round the cottage and land here with teal and Kira. Went out Thursday, walked up the lane towards the main house and was heading out to the field where the pond is, but Kira bated as we approached the woods, held her back and looked and saw a rabbit run down the edge of the wood, left Kira go and saw her pitch between two trees, made my way across and she'd got a rabbit by the head. Dispatched the rabbit gave her a small feed on it and placed it in my hawking vest as we'd only been out 10 mins and that was her first flight. Carried on round the estate, and had several flights at rabbits, a brown hare which she could of taken as she was level with it's head but she peeled off and flew round past me and perched in a tree. continued on round the estate and my dog pointed a roe deer in some rushes in the field to the right of the track to my cottage. Watched that run down into the woods, Kira then flew into a clump of trees and spent a few minutes chasing a grey squirrel up and down a tree, called her back to the glove as I don't want her to take on squirrels, and called it quits.
Went out late yesterday afternoon, and kira flew up the track to try to take on a rabbit in some rhododendrums, she missed and perched in a tree above the shrubs. Made my way up to her and she suddenly pitched into the thickest denses patch of rhododendrums, I could hear a lot of racket, jumped the fences and made my way up the main drive, could just make Kira out in the bushes, dropped to my knees, and crawled through the rhododendrums, Not a pretty sight, my head and shoulders and body in amongst the bushes and my arse stuck out in the drive:lol:  Managed to get kira who had firmly in her talons, by the head a Maran Roosteroo Anyway dealt with that quickly and quietly (as really don't want to meet my neighbours by saying that i'm sorry but my goshawk has just murdered your rooster). Carried on round the estate, and had a few flights at rabbits, but nothing special; I probably should of packed it in when I got kira out of the bushes as I twisted my knee as I dropped down to get her out of the bushes, and it was a bit painful, but didn't feel that bad. Hmmm, well I'm now sat in my cottage after having a sleepless night as my knee is red hot and the pain is unbearable, and I'm now hobbling round like a one legged pirate So no hawking today as I can hardly stand let alone walk:cry:

Well I've not flown Kira properly for weeks now, due to my knee playing up, but I put her out to weather in my garden today and she was sat on the bowperch neck stretched head feathers up, plus my gsp was bouncing off the walls, so I bit the bullet and decided to go out for as long as my knee would allow me to.
I did the usual circuit around the land near the cottage here, and Kira was head bobbing the whole time I was out, she bated at a few rabbits at the far end of the lane but I held her back as they were on the edge of cover and she wouldn't stand a chance.
Teal went on point and flushed a hen pheasant which promptly broke cover and flew towards the main house, Kira left the glove to fly after it and peeled off thankfully but as she did this 5 hen pheasants broke cover from behind me in amongst some fallen trees, again she flew after them but never connected.
Regained Kira and walked out into the fields a brown hare got up in front of my dog and Kira flew after it, but peeled off when the hare managed to put some distance between itself and her.
Decided that it was best to head back to the cottage, but as I was making my way back Kira left the glove and flew across the field towards the tree the far side, as she went to land in a tree she sharply changed direction and ploughed down through some undergrowth. I made my way across at walking pace but I then had to increase my pace (can't run at all at the moment, my knee just won't allow it) as I could hear a bit of a commotion. I then climbed over the fence and ducked under a tree and across a stream. I then spyed Kira sat in the stream soaking wet with a firm hold of a cock pheasant by it’s head. Yup I know it’s out of season , but these things happen. Anyway that’s a perfect end to my season with Kira and I’m closing her account for this year, and will put her down for a well-earned rest and much needed moult. So for this season she’s taken 4 pheasants, 5 young herring gulls, 1 rook, 1 Misc and 30 odd rabbits; not a huge bag But not bad for a female falconer with her first goshawk. I hope you have enjoyed my write up’s of this season, I wish you all a good clean moult and here’s to next season!!!
All the best

Well finally started to fly Kira again, been out and flown her about 7 times now, and she has been flying well after brown hares but like last season she's been pulling off just as she gets within range of connecting. The weather here has been really pleasant the last week, and I've been able to get out for an hour or two over the last 3 days around lunchtime (beauty of having a job where I work mainly from home). On Friday I walked up behind my car and van and Teal went on point instantly, as I approached her a cock pheasant broke from the cover near to the burn that runs behind my outhouses, Kira left the glove and pumped after it, the pheasant ploughed into the field the other side of the lane, next to the fence, Kira ploughing down into the fence instantly behind it, both birds then got up and flew up through the trees that run parallel to the main lane. The pheasant continued out of the trees and down across the next field, with Kira perching in one of the trees. I called kira back to the glove and we continued round the estate, only seeing a few roe deer out in the setaside field. Got back to the cottage and decided to walk up the lane towards the main road, Teal was acting as if she could scent something out in the field, so we made our way into the field, and Teal went down to some rushes and went on point again, approached her and sent her in to the flush. She ran into the rushes but didn't seem to be able to flush anything, but as she worked down through the rushes a hen pheasant broke and flew down the field towards some pine trees, Kira was off the glove and flying down the field after the hen, both birds banking up over the tops of the pine trees and out across the lane and towards the main house. I ran round into the lane and headed back down towards the cottage, as I got half way down the lane Kira flew out of a tree near my cottage and back towards me. Decided to call her to the glove and call it a day. She was 2lb 3.5
Saturday I put Kira out in the garden to weather for an hour or two before I flew her, brought her into the house and weighed her and she was a wee bit over 2lb 4, decided that I would take teal and we would walk up the lane and make our way out across the fields as it was around midday and the sun was quite strong as well as the breeze. We'd only walked a hundred yards or so and two pheasant poults were running up the lane in front of us, Kira left the glove and flew up after them, both poults ran to begin with and then decided that flying would be a better option, one peeled off to the left and flew into a wooded area whilst the other continued up the lane and peeled off to the right and into the rhododendrums with Kira in hot pursuit. I continued up towards Kira with Teal, Kira had perched in a tree further up the lane from myself, Teal was pointing at a clump of rhododendrums, got her to flush but the pheasant poult just ran through the undergrowth. Took another step forward and a poult broke cover and flew down through the trees to the my left, no sooner had it broken cover Kira had flown over the top of my head and was right up behind the poult as they flew down through the trees and out of sight. I ran round into the field and worked my way down the edge of the trees, could hear a lot of noise and Kira's bell, jumped the fence into the trees and worked my way through the trees to find kira on top of the poult. Took a photo on my phone which is not brilliant, but I hadn't got my camera with me. Left Kira gorge on the poult as I'm down south for trainng for my job for a few days, so I will not get a chance to fly her.

Not flown Kira at all since Saturday as I was down Harrogate Monday and Tuesday for training for my job, then I had to drive up to Aberdeen to visit a farm yesterday so I didn't get a chance to fly her yesterday either. Managed to get out this lunch time with Teal and Kira, and immediately Teal went on a point and flushed a cock pheasant, but it had a good head start and although Kira flew after it, she decided to perch in a nearby tree. Called her back to the glove and made our way up into the fields near the cottage. Didn't see anything to fly at, but Kira decided to have a pop at the wood pigeon's over the far side of the field in the trees, she banked up over the trees and circled back towards me suddenly ploughing into a rhododendrum bush. Took me 10 mins to locate her where I found holding onto a rabbit by the head, she was definately not letting it get away. Gave her some warm heart and liver and made our way back to the house. She is now sat in her bath soaking her feet and bathing:) Sorry photo taken on phone again.

Managed to get out for a couple of hours today, really forced myself as I was up just after 3am for work this morning, and my dog is in kennels as I'm off down to Port William and Dumfries for work tomoz. Walked up the lane and Kira flew after some Wood pigeons and perched in a tree, called her down to the glove, and in the field on my right a cock pheasant flew down the field banking round to the right (behind me) aiming for the field of set aside, Kira left the glove and banked sharp right behind me cutting the pheasant's route, as both birds made the field the pheasant headed for the cover of the trees and Kira footed him pulling out a load of feathers as he flew across the fence. Unfotunately she didn't hold him tight enough and he got away. Called her back to the glove, and walked round the field (really missed my dog today) Ended up the far end of the estate, and walked along the edge of a field with some cattle in it, Kira saw a rabbit and left the glove flying down the fence line, pitched to drop on the rabbit when a pheasant got up and flew off down through some trees, she instantly took off after it, but it had made too good a head start and made off across the valley, Suddenly I heard squealing and made my way round into the trees to find Kira being bounced about by a rabbit that she had firmly by the head. Photo (again on my mobile sorry) below, called it a day, I'm off to my bed to catch up on sleep, as got two more very early mornings for work and a few miles to drive again.  But nae bad for a day when I'm shattered.

Took Kira out this afternoon, really not expecting a great deal as I'd flown her yesterday at a field meet. Walked up the lane and my GSP went on point, as I approached her a hen pheasant went into the bushes to our left, got Teal to flush the hen pheasant and as soon as it broke from the cover and flew into the woods, Kira left the glove and flew off after it, pulling a load of feathers out of it, again the pheasant made it's escape(minus several tail feathers). Got Kira back on the glove and walked out across the fields, worked Teal through the field but saw absolutely nothing to fly at. Kira left the glove and headed for the woods over on my far left. Made my way across to locate her, saw her flying back towards me, then heard this almighty thud! Made my way into the wood and located Kira 30 feet up a tree holding onto a grey Squirrel. I'm now pooing myself thinking she'll be bitten to peices, and how the heck am I going to get her down from the tree. I've never encouraged her to fly squirrels, and always try to avoid them when ever possible; but this was one occassion that I just couldn't avoid. Whistled to her, and thankfully she dropped to the ground with the squirrel held firmly by the head, she thankfully had killed it outright. I picked her up and called it a day:roll:

Been out yesterday and today with Kira, had a good flight yesterday after a hen pheasant with both birds going vertically up over the tops of some trees, unfortunately Kira didn't connect. Went out about two hours ago here and Kira first flight and she flew off across a field and caught one item that will be listed as Miscellaneous, but we all stink now and she definately was not fed up on it!
Picked her up and carried on around the estate she flew off at high speed into some woods and ploughed down in amongst some fallen trees, could hear a lot of noise, eventually managed to locate her in amongst a load of fallen trees and branches, where she had a cock pheasant by the head. I've given her a good feed on this, as this is her first kill since she was attacked and injured by a wild buzzard the other week. Just two photo's not very good ones as taken with mobile phone again.
