View Full Version : What Grips harder?

This might be interesting.
Between a Goshawk and a Red Tail which do you think has the most powerfull grip?

For obvious reasons footing ability is not what I mean!

Please register a vote. Even if you do not have practical experience of both species you must have an opinion.

I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere, that pound for pound, the female Redtail probably has the most powrful grip of any bird.

Never had a Red Tail go through a standard hawking glove.
Had it with more than one female Gos.

Lol - had a FRT grip but didnt go through glove either... only heald a male gos - lol.... but nope. Female RT had gr8 gripping poweress.

Never had a Red Tail go through a standard hawking glove

My female pushed her blunt back talon thru a Martin Jones double thickness glove and into the back of my hand.......
My mate was casting her at the time....he didn't believe me until I took the glove off and he saw my hand.

My male Gos managed to find the joins in the glove on regular occasions, that wasn't very pleasant either!

LLL.

Martin Jones double thickness glove
**** leather m8

I suppose what Im on about when I think about it is the ability to pierce.
Slightly different, though very closely related to grip.

I suppose what Im on about when I think about it is the ability to pierce.
Slightly different, though very closely related to grip.
I've noticed that most Reds seem to have talons considerably less sharp than a Gos. This would obviously make a big difference. I have the utmost respect for a bird that can ram a blunt talon through most things that are put in front of it.
That doesn't mean I have less respect for the Gos, I don't think the strenglth difference is really possible to measure just by how hard it grips the glove, I think it would be fair to say that a hand is not sensitive enough to differentiate between two so closely matched.

Lucky.

I'd have to go with red tail... Only ever held your gos Tim and she never gripped, and she was only 9 weeks. But its a scary prospect having a gripping red tail on the fist. Very powerful indeed

Tim Laycock

I believe that A red tails talons and feet are more suited to gripping loose skin and crushing.(Ground game)

A goshawks Talons are long and more curved they are more inclined to pierce when something is gripped rather than fold skin and lock on to it.(Feathered game)

As the question is which of the two has the most powerfull grip, the answer without ANY doubt is the Red Tail

Goose

I,ve not held a Gos but the Gos seems to be sleek and precise where as a Red Tail is more braun than brains

Physicaly, there is no comparison. I'm not really sure why this thread is up here with a poll to boot! The poll might as well be "Which is stronger, a Kestrel or a Golden eagle?", I think this is just another thread so that the red flyers and the gos flyers can claim there's is better.......Pointless as we all know the red is far superior to the gos....... ....Relax.....it's a joke......I can see the gos flyers hitting the keyboards already.....The Red tail has quite a bit more strength in it's feet due to sheer toe size and muscularity. Look closely at the Gos's toes and you will note that they are designed in a slender, longer way that an RT's. the same goes for the smaller femur, tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus which all hold the muscle and the tendons which operate the toes called the extensor and flexor tendons. RT's toes are fat and relatively short as compared to body size and the fatter toes are armed with larger, stronger talons to compensate for the increased strength. If you look closely enough, you will see that the gos's talons have slightly less curvature to them as they are more designed to take a broader spectrum of quarry such as birds as well as mammels. The red tail on the other hand is almost entirely designed for ground quarry mammals with the extra thickness and grip strength to hold them and kill them. Look at the shape of your birds talons and note the indented shape that the talon takes on the inside. This has been desribed by many as a blood letting groove for quicker dispatch of quarry. Neat fact for you all....In America, the bird with the strongest foot to body size ratio is the American Kestrel.

Yea, I have absolutely no social life at the moment.........I read alot of books......alot of boring books with facts for that matter and I have a knack for remembering trivial information at times.....I had heard somewhere that the average ft/lb grip of a red tail (didn't specify male or female) was around 80lbs/sq/in at the tips of the talons. I am going to try search the net for some info on this.

Harpy eagle. Not sure of the actual grip strength, but the guiness book of world records lists the harpy the strongest bird of prey and as having the impact stregth of a high powered rifle on contact with it's quarry.

no contest female red, had a female finnish but not even close to the power of a red,had a red go through glove, skin took half an hour to get the bitch off all i could feel was the warmth of my blood filling the glove and that was all because i put a hood on her,so if anyone would like to hood her to see for themselfs feel free

6 and 3/4 red tail don't you mean a 6 and 3/4 typo.

As for gloves. It has got to be a ben long. Use 1 at the mo. Had it for over 2 years and i have everything on it. Still nice and flexible the only thing that has got through it is my EEO but he is in the process of trashing an eagle glove now which came from anoth supplier (not naming names) and succeeding

Ive worked with both plus other wild raptors. I don't even bother with Falconry gloves , to light and not enough coverage area . The glove I use is heavy leather over calvaler with 5mm insulation and a double liner. I have only had one bird go through it , Great Horned Owl.
But of the RT vs GH, RT has all the power but oh so sharp is the gos!!

It's not always the size of the equipment but how you use it! 8)

Absolutley, unquestionably and without any doubt from someone who has been tagged by both species more times than i care to admit (once had my hand broken by a Gos!) it has to be the female Redtail.

No question! 8)

I vote for the RT's for pure brute grip power. I will agree with Finnish and Weasel in that the Gos's talons will pierce things easier due to the way they are shaped. Those are two different qualities all together. When I got it from a real big hen I didn't feel any pain till she let go. It just felt like I hand my hand was in a vise. You know like that feeling like when you go to the dentist to get a cavity drilled out. You know something is in ya but you really don't feel the pain. I really don't like getting nailed by the Gos's smaller cousin the Coopers. Every time I got nailed it feels like a really deep Cat scratch. Kinda adds a stinging sensation to the nice hole as well. I haven't been footed by a Gos yet but if it's anything like a Coops I don't want to. Course the Coopers isn't as strong as a Gos so it's instant pain.-Zach
