Well i would say no it shouldn't be, it should be taken to the vet. However, since its at a zoo they would have probably got a vet to see it already. You should of asked or said something....

if it was that unwell it should be indoors under supervision, not on display...did it mention what was wrong with it?

Sounds horrible - not nice for the owl or for the kids.

There is a chance that the owl was ok and was lying down to keep cool but it doesnt sound like it if there was a notice.
Our Boobook lies down if she gets very hot - she's even been known to stand on a perch on one leg with the other leg sticking straight out in front of her for about an hour  trying to cool down.
She's also in molt at the moment so she looks a bit scruffy too.
The first time she lay down we thought she was dying

its actually illeagal to display a sick owl, they should have had provision inside, a hospital aviary ( as a zoo, Im sure they must have) and it should have been in it! end of story.

oh great! Id love to know how the little one fared, but to be honest, if it was down. . . i dont hold out much hope. knowing raptors dont show signs if illness till they are very bad, i pray this story ends well.

Hey guys.
Unfortunately the owl died later in the day on Tuesday. It was given a lot of vetinerary attention but unfortunately they were unable to save him. It is thought that he died from a vitamin imbalance but they are awaiting the final post mortem results. :(
Cheers guys, thought i'd let u know what happened.

SAD TALE....arrgh why the blummin heck was the bird allowd to be left on "display" sometimes you have to despair....gotta say to go to the trouble of actually sticking a sign up saying they know the bird is ill is bordering on sick.....

deffinate bad practice! i know this BoP centre thats housing their raptors in awful conditions and creosote on avairies , collapsing shelves, overgrown folliage and tatty netting, no roofs or sides (just netting) perches too thin and the scops is deffinately disturbed, plumage dirty and scruffy and it keeps whacking its head against its feet. the time i went there, a baby bengal was on the shop counter shelf in a cardboard box with a heat lamp over it! i wrote to the usuals, i just have to keep my fingers crossed and see if anything happens.
chees osiris for that. it sickens me to hear tales of that sort. that is one good reason for me to come back to the uk..... to go kick their ass.
