Just a question, who was the first person in the UK to breed from a pure finnish pair, either by AI or by natural pairing?

Think Cliff Bramauld was the last person to legally import goshawks from Finland, about 20 years ago, guess he still has that stock, I believe he's living in S.W.Scotland now.

Was speaking to hunter who goes up there a few times a year for Reindeer, he was telling me that he saw several gosses being killed during his time there in the last few years, makes me sick to think of the waste.
Thank god that some are still getting them out.

steve tolley, first bred goshawks in 1981 from a German pair Freya and AL,the first finnish he bred was in 1984 from Freda and a bob haddon male.
i am all most certain it was bob in 1979 it should be in the goshawk work shop book if any body has a copy

The first breeding of Goshawks in captivity was by Bob Berry in 1972.
I am still searching for further info on UK breeding and at a guess it would be Bob Hadden, Steve Tolley or George Roberts from memory George was the first to breed Pure Finish Birds but I think both Bob and Steve bred Euro Goshawks before George but it is so long ago that I can't remember the details but I will have notes some where from the RBA Meetings and the Goshawk Workshop ( Feb 13th 1988 )
And before you lot start again I did not build Noas Ark it was my mate Joe the cave man

My semen donor Eric's grandad was a bird that George Roberts bred in 1980. He was sold to the Shaw brothers in Chatsworth, and i bought him as a sixteen year old bird in 1996. He was a very nice size male with an aviary weight of 2lb 7oz. So George must of been breeding finnish birds in the 1970's.

I bred them in 1980, John and Jim Shaw had bred them at least two years earlier, several other people had bred by then.

Sorry Peter I completely forgot about you
There were a lot of Pioneers back in those days and techniques were not as easy to discuss as they are now we have the Internet. I built my Goshawk Aviaries based on George Roberts design and although I did finally breed Goshawks in the early 90's it was not like it is now as most of the Goshawks I had been using were Imported from Finland and the old story of biggest is best was rife in those days as well so there were very few males available as every one wanted a female. Those Males that survived a breeding season were again very few but there were always smaller German and Hungarian Goshawks available so a lot of crossing was going on even in those days but some breeders were still claiming that their young birds were pure Finish when they were not so even today tracing Blood Lines back is not as easy as it could be.

Bob Haddon picked up a pair in the late 70's which succesfully produced one youngster in 79, Can't be 100% without asking him but I'm pretty sure this one was "Belen". in 1980 he produced 3 one of which I think went to Ronnie and was a star of a certain wildlife program "Marlyn"...
I saw a old video of the original pair copulateing taken with a old full format video camera he borrowed from the local school, they had all the latest mod cons back then:lol:. there was some Monsters about back then! I'm sure there is now but the original pure blood stamp back then took some beating....
Lots of info and questions about it in a old Book "Understanding Goshawks" published in 1981 by The International Association For Falconry And Conservation Of Birds Of Prey, well worth a read....
cheers
Tony
