View Full Version : Suicidal Rabbits

Had some very odd hunting today.

1 Took out the MRT. Had several good slips but the rabbits always just got to a burrow. On the last slip, the same thing happened again. Muttering good falconry curses I took out a pick up piece and started towards where he was sitting on the ground on the other side of the valley. As I stepped forward I flushed a rabbit, which bolted up the hill to where the hawk was. I was desperately shouting 'Ho!' but the hawk had still not seen the rabbit which was on a collision course with him. At the last moment he spotted the rabbit and nailed him where he sat just before it could bowl him over! Couldn't believe it - thousands of acres to escape into and ran into an RT!

2 My husband (Skeld) took out the MHH. The HH was after a rabbit which eventually found itself at the top of an outcrop with an 8 foot sheer drop, and simply leapt of the edge. The HH nailed it in mid air, and both plummeted to the ground! Thankfully he had a good grip and was OK (can't say the same for the rabbit!).

Between ground hunting hawks and flying rabbits, it has been a bit of a strange day!

Has anyone else had similar things happen?

Worst of it was that I did have a camera with me, but no chance to use it! Certainly cooler here than Essex, but we don't have to worry about birds overheating. Every cloud....!

The worst day i have had out hunting was with my fhh she was chasing a rabbit on the runway turn it excellently then all of a sudden disappeared.
She was a good 200 yards in front of me. Couldn't find her any were.
I ran back to the car for telemetry, on the way back got a signal under the run way. My heart was in my mouth waited about 2 hours. Phone air traffic control told them the situation.
Nearly in tears by now, all of a sudden she just popped up out of no were. Wet and full of mud with a full crop, rabbit fur every were.
Once i got hold of her i looked down the hole it was just a straight pipe going under the runway for drainage.
Near got the rest of the rabbit but who cares ? i got Luker back.

Hi Andy,

I think I would have been in tears at that stage, and wondering if the telemetry was malfunctioning. Good that it turned out OK.
