View Full Version : Horror story from Vet

I took Cody back to the Vets.....Again nothing wrong with the eye, its not the hairs touching it, he flushed it again and gave me some weird cream/drops. All well and good................But the great big pumper presented me with Cody's entire centre deck feather including the sodding bell!!! "I've never had that happen before, it just fell out !!!" 5 MONTHS THAT TOOK TO GROW.
What can I do if anything????????
IAmTheWeasel
10-08-2005, 04:20 PM
Can't if it fell out. Put the bell on the other deck and hope that it doesn't fall out too! Could be stress related
Ben C
10-08-2005, 04:29 PM
Not stress...............flew 15ft on the creance 10 minutes after return from vet. First time of asking!! His weight is around 740 grammes as opposed to 700 last year. His condition is brilliant and the Vet didn't need to knock him out for the drops. Just badly cast by an inexperienced bloody nurse I think!!!
MickeyDredd
10-08-2005, 04:31 PM
I think you need to give that nurse some "experience"

10-08-2005, 04:37 PM
Maybe it's time for the other vet Ben if you still haven't got any idea. Those feathers looked close but then I didn't get as close as a vet would.
Ben C
10-08-2005, 04:38 PM
The eye hasn't closed today so fingers crossed.....but Col your right on the vet front mate....out with the old in with the new!! :)
Adam Barrett
10-08-2005, 04:39 PM
you could use a brass tail tube as they only need fix to one of the feathers and using a crimping tool makes the job real easy.
i dont know what to suggest about the bell maybe just go back to two leg bells?
its a unlucky accident mate im sure you'll have him up and going in no time.
All the best

whoooopsssss you will have to put him up for the year no good with the deck feather missing bad look mate  lol only joking im sure with all your experience you will come up with away to sort the prob out
Adam Barrett
10-08-2005, 04:56 PM

MickeyDredd
10-08-2005, 05:18 PM
Nope, nothing to imp on to.
Ben, how come you were not there to cast Cody yourself?
Ben C
10-08-2005, 08:31 PM
My hawk is so good romeo he'd f'cukin fly with cellophane and lead for wings mate!!! Ya sarky get :) :) :).....my experience tells me to keep flying as I would if it happened mid-season. :) See you'd be alright you have two hawks to fly, ones down pick up another :) :)
Nope I wasn't there to cast it, he said he was going to put him under for a proper cornea inspection.....etc etc. Its just the one centre feather.......
Proper numpty.

use one leg bell, and keep your fingers crossed and hope the deck starts to regrow. Do you tail mount your telemetry ? if so mount on the next feather on the good side.

OF as per usual I concur. Thankfully he flew 30ft INSTANT at his lofting weight of 740grms again this evening, so it should start to re-grow at this weight?
But as you say fingers crossed.

 nice one ben yep thats the good thing of having 2 to play with ,but like you said it could have happend mid way through the season and you would have carried on but i do understand how you feel ,as i get a bit ****ed when arnie breaks the ends off the tips of his wings when he goes in hard after the pheasants , had had to put him up for 6 weeks the other year as he ripped the the talon right in half but lucky enough a little rest and sugar  put it right yes i used sugar to stop the bleeding and clogg it to heal quicker a tip off an animal man and it worked better than any creams :P so ben stop frowning and start hunting

Ben,
It will depend on how the feather came out, if it was "accidently pulled out" when the hawk struggled or something similar than in my experience its pot luck if it ever grows back. On the other hand if it just fell out (never had it happen so don't really know....) you might be lucky. Ask yourself Ben, "do you feel lucky punk" aka Dirty Harry or should that be Dirty Harris

Forgot to say Ben, lost both center decks last season. He still fly flew well and caught plenty afterwards. It ain't the end of the world even though it plays on your mind.

I always feel lucky punk!!! :) :) Just another lesson learn't and one that is just as steep as any so far encountered. Not liking the word EVER in your statement....is that EVER as in FOREVER or just this season??????
On a side note: Is it me or do you lot feel in absolute pain when something like this happens???? I cannot get over the stress it causes me....christ its only one feather but it niggles my head right through!!!

forever.........
The thing that strikes me most Ben is that it was the feather with a bell on that just fell off, whats the chances of that ? To me it been pulled out with bell catching on the towel etc - Might be wrong but you've been unlucky. Hope it grows back.

Has the feather been plucked out whole or was it a pinched feather? If the feather was plucked cleanly it should regrow ok but it all depends whether the follicle was damaged, some people recommend packing the empty follicle with bees wax but in my experience I just leave it and keep fingers crossed.

ben spoke to friend who is a good vet but better than that hes friends with avian vet suggests you should ask for a die contact wash which will tell your vet if anything is rubbing inside its eye if it is only conjunctivitus you should be getting sterile wash followed by anti biotic wash hope this helps sorry to hear about c/ d feathers

Sounds like your talking about fluoroscein dye, will normally run off the cornea but if something has rubbed on the eye and caused an ulcer it will stain the ulcer bright green. I'd be pretty sure this would already have been done, the first, most basic test when dealing with eye problems in all species.

Ben I feel for you, its little things like that that drive me bananas!!! Really gets up my nose, but from someone elses point of view it could "only be one feather".
Hope it grows back.

Had you thought that he might just be chucking a double moult?
Sounds suspiciously like it to me, especially as it is the centre deck thats gone.
My old female redtail used to do it EVERY year, without fail.
It didn't matter how early I started to cut the weight. I lost three tail feathers and four secondarys one year, what a nightmare.
I just learned to wait a while before fixing the tail bell.
Regards,
Lucky.

He has done the dye in the eye............nothing.
I now have Fucithalmic cream, 3 times a day for the next 3 days. Blood test was clear, swabs showed a mild conjuntivitis!!!
The vet washed it out again and he came home fine, although he closed it slowly very late last night.
Tail feather came out in one clean piece....no blood. nothing.
Strangely LLL that information helps a lot, at least I am not alone eh.

When did he hard pen from the moult Benc?
I don't know what sort of bird he is, not sure wether it would make a difference.
I have seen a lot of birds try a double moult, a lot of Harris hawks, quite a few reds, and some others.
If they finish the moult early and the weather is good seems to set it off quite well....
My Red tail used to finish about October, within a couple of weeks, the decks were out....

The weekend just gone. He is a harris, and he is flying on the creance at a stupid high weight. He was 750 grammes this morning and he flew 50 ft instantly (he flew at 700 grammes last year). Perhaps I need to re-duce his weight to stop this 'double' moult???
If this is the case (sounds as plausable as a clumsy vet, a mixture of the two perhaps) then Harris Hawks are surely the most weird raptors. around.
Dave G
11-08-2005, 12:11 PM
so whats that just over 1lb 6 1/2 oz thats not realy at a high weight about the average starting weight for a harris , ive flew mine for leisure at 1lb 12 oz thats just under what i put him up for molt at

You will probably find that once he is going, he'll stop. As I said, I've seen birds start it long after their weight was reduced.
I personally wouldn't be worrying. And if this is the case, it certainly would be nothing to do with the vet.
I personally cant see how being 'clumsy' would make it fall out. Break it maybe, but not fall out. You would have to give it a firm pull for that.

It could be a high weight for this particular bird Romeo. I have seen males that fly at 1lb1oz & some at nearly 2lb. The word 'Average', is not really a word that should be associated with Falconry.

Lucky.

Yeah thought so LLL.....Perhaps I am being unfair and not a little testy. He said its never happened to him before and he was visably embarrassed......free as well :) :)
750 is a heavy weight for Cody Romeo....as I have said before he hunted at between 680 and 700 grammes last year so that is a difference of a fair few ounces.....which is a lot for a little Harris. Its all relative to the hawk I suppose mate :) :)
700grm = 1lb 8 oz
750grms = 1lb 10 oz
28.34 grms in and oz.

I love falconry............I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A DOUBLE MOULT before now. Now I am over the intial shock, its a lesson never to be forgotten. I also think Cody had been pulling on the bell and tail mount, losened the feather, he was then cast and out it pops. :) :) Bloody hawk will be the death of me.

Just a quick update....the eye failed to get better on the course of conjunctivitis cream, so we whisked him off to another vet in Cheshire this morning (specialist Avian vet and falconer: May have been sprout??) Without doubt the best service we have ever had. He showed interest and concern and explained that Cody has in fact got a 'lazy eye' bought about by a concussion which has damaged the nerve ending in the socket. HOWEVER HIS EYEBALL IS IN TIP TOP CONDIDTION. Apparently all BOP have very sensitive eye sockets so be warned. He also has a secondary eye infection which has been treated and he had a head cold caught from wild birds!!! We have two sets of medication to be administered for the next 5 days. Cost £107 but technically free because we are insured :) :) Even if we weren't that is a god damn fair price by any standards. So all in all a good day :) :)

You'll know if its Sprout if you check the "rate the forum member thread"
A MHH I gave to a mate for breeding a couple of years ago has recently hit something in the aviary and suffered a detached retina!!
There was a wild male gos kicking about checking out his gosses and he reckons that the HH has hit the window hard "seeing it off"
