As the description says, I would like to get a common buzzard next year (edit: ok, I haven't ruled out a Harris), however, I have a few questions on them.

Firstly is it best to get one at a certain age? e.g. does their behavior differ if bought at an earlier/later age?

Secondly, are there any breeders of common buzzards, because I've had a look around to get an idea on availability and price but have not found much info.

Thirdly, anyone out there keep one and have any suggestions/info/tips that could be useful :D

Thanks for that info! I've pretty much decided on a common buzzard though, always had a soft spot for them and it seems to make sense.

What do you mean 'makes sense'? :) :) :)

i know what ben means, the harris exudes that extra bit of excitement, where in general the buzzard tends to be a bit lazy in the field. but thats just in general, you my just get the one that excels. . you never know.

Well, everything just seemed to point towards getting one over a Harris, but i'm certainly going to try and get some experience with both! It seems a Harris Hawk may actually be a better choice than I first thought :?

Don't get me wrong Roo I love CB's and there is a member on here called Sparrie who manages to catch a few rabbits with his. It all depends on what land you have, what quarry and what course or club you join. Don't forget they live a long time so you will have to have it for the next 15 years as well :) :) :) :)

If you just changed your mind because of a couple of comments you need to seriously think if you are ready for a bird at all.

Don't worry, I'm nowhere near ready and know I'm not! if that makes sense :? . It was just in doing research I didn't see many people breeding common buzzards so thought I would post, because if I spent a year planning on getting one then couldn't, it would be a bit annoying. I'm fully aware that birds can live over 15 years and that they take a lot of commitment, i'm prepared to give that :)

As I said, just doing some research at the moment, I would not get a bird before I'm ready for one, even a novice like me knows that would be cruel on the bird and asking for trouble. I'm going to wait until I've had hands on experience with both before choosing. I should have made it clearer in my first post, sorry.

Still a long way away, a forum member has kindly agreed to let me come out when he takes his birds out and I'm currently trying to find some volunteer work, I want to make as few mistakes as possible!

Yeah I should put more thought into my posts, realised that now. It's reassuring to see people caring though.

About the terrain, around here it's mainly the typical South East England grassy farm fields, small woods but nearby is also some coniferous hills and heathland. Rabbits and squirrels seem to be the most abundant animals here, often have both in the garden.

well, it was obvious to me that you were taking time and thought, preparing ahead and coming on here and asking advice . it sometimes seems people jump before they need to on forums, and interested people looking for advice get pounced on from a great height. its obvious folks on here care deeply for BoP , as im sure you do and i wish you great joy in your future pursuit into the art and sport. dont be afraid to ask any of the more experienced falconers for help and questions, as they are spot on for advice , specially for those who prepare ahead and do the research. i tell yea, woe betide any one who posts on here asking 'so what do i feed a BoP?' having already purchased one! :D

Well I was Pished sorry for any comments!

CB's are nice looking birds, but I have chose a MHH for my first bird, horses for courses!

Take your time ROO, ask questions, I have been intrested in Falconry since I was about 8 but I have never had to time to commit to a bird so joined the BFC, met loads of nice folk and been on loads of field meets.

theres no rush mate and dont forget, you will never know everything!!

Roo.

I have a Common Buzzard and he is great fun :D . Quite difficult to keep him really fit because I have a full time job :( but I think I managed to keep him relatively fit over last season. Benc said that I had caught rabbits but I haven't yet but he has chased. He is imprinted and makes a bit of noise which tends to scare the rabbits away. He is nearly finished his moult and I should get him out in a couple of weeks. I am determined to get rabbits this year to prove all the people wrong who says it cant be done  (freinds said this not forum members). Here is a link to a few of my pictures. Hope you like.

he looks very nice, not seen many pictures of them! Is he your first bird?

Yes he is my first bird. Hes a year old now. Always wanted a CB and love them. Great fun, mainly quite laid back but he is a nightmare on the dummy bunny. He sits on his tail and everything. Luckily only broke one last year. Hopefully none this year but when he catches a rabbit I can see it ending in tears for me when I get him home if I even get him off of it.

Gary.
