Took skye out me intermewd female harris tonight.
She was2lb 51/4oz which 3/4oz over her hunting weight that is normally 2lb 4 1/2oz. i gave her a full crop on a rabbit that we had late last night.
Anyway we were walking round our normal hunting ground with out much succes had a few good chases on rabbits but they got to cover before she really had half a chance.
managed to get about 30 foot of a group of 6-7 gulls feeding and slipped her.
she picked out her target and bound nicley to it about 50-60 foot in the air  8)
it was her first proper mid air catch and im proper chuffed
Anyone else ever flown harris' on gulls?
great sport

do they provide good flights cz?
if it is anything like the flights in the street hawking video i think id look to something else as they diddnt really appeal to me.
As i was on foot and slipped of the fist the gulls ha chance to take to the wing so a good flight was had.

Ariana, my FHH, did gulls last year. She never caught lone gulls but did
right well when she stuck into a group. Even downed a black kite once. On the Sea of Japan coast black kites blend in socially with the gulls quite well. They're 10 times faster than Harris' though and not likely to ever be snagged by one. I was shocked to see a b.o.p. do in another b.o.p. Ape shall not kill ape sort of thing...

I use a female harris at the landfill site at work , and she will often catch 2-3 gulls in the day , i had some fantasic flights some stright down wind at crazy speeds as the gulls get up, some head towards her because there's nowhere else to go, and bag shes knocked it clean out before twisting over and binding , the greater black backs are mean and much bigger than she is , she piles in anyway though:P She even catches the odd raven (yes i know there protected , but they get relesed unharmed) .

thanks for the tips
im guessing today she will still be a little on the high side but dont think it should matter
she often travels on the fist in the car so i dont think it should be to much of a problem-now just have to find a willing volunter todrive for me  8)
hope mine gets to that standard sakerYZF

First slips need the car to be stationary, then build up in speed as her confidence increase - 30 mph being about maximum. You'll need to brief the driver on what your require him to do, it not just a case of jumping in the passenger seat and away you go. Farm tracks are best used, keep off the busy highways  A car with a sunroof would be a good idea.

If she doen't get the idea , i had a mate stand out in the field once swinging a lure as i drove past , that was what mine looking out the car.
If you go out when its chuking it down , you'll catch the odd crow that can't fly , had a male harris few years back who caught 3 one wet day in novermber 2 of them could't get off the ground! , Its not just gulls n crows either , had a few rabbits a goose ( got away do'h) , phesants sparrows , you name it, industrial estates early in the moring are great ways of catching jackdaws; they trust cars , hope it all does well n don't give up!!! :P

yea i dont much like the idea of flying her out of a moving car at all
couldent find a driver today so just took her out over the golf corse-a few good slips at woodies and she flew really strong just unlucky that she didnt bind-came home with one bunny.
THe flights from ariel quarry are 100 times better than those at rabbit-think im hooked

Once she learns to fly from the car, moving flights are no problem.
could a male handle gulls?

i've had a male who few at 1lb 2oz, he took gulls ( herring) imo harris hawks are the most gutsy of all hawks, once there confident watch em go!
In my expirence , once they learn the head hold , gulls are easier , crows can use there feet , gulls can only bite, plus a crows will hassle a hawk on another crow , where as gull clear off,
Once she's used to car hawking you'll love it and so will she , she'l sence the advantage she has and use it:)
Also , if you can get a driver great.. if not go out on your own... i did it for a few seasons .. so long as you go out early, and learn to change with ur right arm, its easier in some ways.
The more kills the better !

errr I think that might be a little on the illigal side, I wonder how the policeman would write that one down. "The defendant was spotted with a bloody great bird on his arm while trying to drive, your honour"
If you cant use a mobile because it's illegal how come they never stop smokers?????

lol, yeah was spotted a few times , didn't even give me a second glance , i do live in wales after all, much stranger things going on, besides thats why i go out before it gets light, next to no traffic , quiet back lanes, n less fuzz:P Im sure if you where wailing down the m6 trying to catch crows they'd question your actions:P Its illegal in britan anyway driver or no driver;) if you want hassle free carhwaking im afraid its gotta be ireland:)
