Here in Japan there are black kites everywhere; at the beach, in the mountains, in the cities, over the motorways.
I've heard, though, that they are almost impossible to train. Surely not, eh? They're mainly carrion feeders, but they will definitely go at game. So has anyone got any experience with these birds?: :?:

Only for exhibition... I do shows with 3 black kites & 1 hybrid Black X Red Kite...
Don't think they'll be good for falconry...

The way they soar so beautifully with the thermals, you'd think they were buteos. What can/do you fly'em at Hawka?

I know what you mean Takajo, I see them flying around my house, by the castle, by the river...they really are EVERYWHERE! Where would you get one though? Illegal to trap and all...
I saw a great aerial display one day when there was a guy feeding the ducks in the moat around the castle by my house. He was tossing bread to the ducks and the kites would stoop down and try and nab the bread before the ducks got it. The ducks would dive for cover from the on coming kite which was pretty funny but I think the kites were more interested in the bread than the ducks. Perhaps you could train the kite to raid hanami parties and bring back sandwiches and sake...?

 8) Been there, done that! Beach parties had 'em doing swooping competitions against the gulls with chicken. Fast as lightnin'! Only way I've held them is at the city zoo here in Nagaoka (city of floods and earthquakes). Only two takajos in all of Niigata and I'm the only one in Nagaoka, so they oblige me. Totally legal :D

Its a male imprint Chris. Sadly only any good for display work, look at his feet for a start :?

They are very acrobatic on the wing and will catch tiny tidbits in the air.
