i just built myself another aviary for a male harris which touch wood will be coming in a few months, i was thinking that instead of putting plastic sheet up to protect wall form the impending pounding it will take from the bird mutes i could paint it with a few coats of washable gloss. only worry is fumes and paint being eaten if it ever flakes.
aviary has plenty of ventilation and paint will have plenty of time to dry and wear over the next few months but will it be safe for the bird???
cheers all u lovely people :D
rob
think jiff tried that and it didnt work

Hello BLKHWK,
if you must paint the mews / aviary then consider Eggshell as the finishing coat/s. (that isn't meant to sound snotty)....
It is/has been unsurpassed in kitchens and high temp/moiSt places like shower rooms/bath rooms ..
We had it on the walls around a solvent sink in a paints and varnish labs ..
Yes it is solvent bound ,the solvent being White Spirit, but it does 'air' ..
Eggshell is as tough as stink ..
regards, ,
arthur,
(*V*) ...
sorry cant rmember teh post :( might have told me on msn

aviary is already painted with wood stain i was just thinking it may be easier to clean with an easy wipe surface, if it dont work or is a danger to the bird then i'm not gonna bother

Have you got any uPVC dealers around you?
If you have, go and have a look at the sheet material. I got an 8 x 4 x 3mm sheet of white uPVC for under 30 quid. Line the aviary in problem spots with this and you wont look back.

My mentor has painted his in a floor paint!

Although they mighted have advanced a little since he first tried ;-)

I asked Falcon this question only yesterday when I was in B&Q. She wasn't sure but adviced a lead free(most are now) odour free gloss.
I got a gloss paint that is cleanable, like for use in a kids room so you can wash it down. Don't know if this will be any good but going to give it a go, if not then next wedding I photograph thn I am getting some of that pvc for the problem areas.

If your going to use a paint ,id use a coating called (acropoyl ) think thats how its spelt m8 ,go to any good roofing merchant ,it,ll cost about 25 pounds and will coat about 15m2 .
It last for years and is a rubberised paint.
All the best
Johnny
i painted my walls with a few coars of the best exterior gloss that money could buy, the idea being a quick scrape and a hose down, no such luck, i'm no vet so i have no idea what happens to hawk food once it's eaten, but when it comes out it will stain anything, i can wash the walls down and they do look reasonable but it aint easy by anymeans, i'm going for real heavy poly sheets this year.

staple gun and a few sheets of tarpolean (sp?)
easy to keep clean and after a few season use just rip em down and buy new.
i used 3 sheets in my mews and at a fiver each its dirt cheap
