hi,
had a couple of calls recently regarding a lost hawk this must be going back 2 or 3 weeks but everytme i got to the places pople have seen it-it has gone.
anyway last night after another call i went to the place it was seen and sure enough it was still there! it is a big female red :?
went up there again tonight same place same time with the binoc's and sure enough it was there again :D
the bird has anklets on but no jesses and i got about 20 foot away from the tree before it flew off- couldent make out if it was a eyass bird or older.
What would be the best method of attempting to return this hawk to its owner my mews :D
All tips will be appreciated.
thanks
Adam

I'm not really sure what you are asking but if you want to catch it I am sure it would be quite easy.
IBR may know of somone in the area who has lost one.

Just so that you all realise that you cannot legally re trap any bird indeginouse or no, without an exemption certificate from DEFRA to do so?
And then the only legal meens is to use a manually operated Bow Trap bated with dead food and to inform your local police wildlife liasion officer of its inteneded use and area of operation.
This method would almost certainly be useless fro your situ Adam, but that's the legal line on stuff.
Hope its helpfull to some folk!

good point Varmit has made there.........I once managed to "coax" a ferral MHH from a tree after three days persistance......but you DO need to realise trapping id illegal and if caught doing so without the certificate and going through the correct channels you may jeaperdise your future ownersship of BOP.

how do you define trapping ?? as in a bow trap as ade said ,, what if you used a chick on a lure and you walked around the bird wrapping the cord round its feet, (known method) is that classed as trapping????

Please excuse my ignorance, when you say trap, do you mean with a trap or "reclaim from the wild"?

Hi Brian thats known as "winding in" as far as i know that is still classed a trapping. What WOULD be interesting to know would be when a bird you have losed falls into the term being trapped? I presume its as soon as it goes ferral?

yes sorry i am attempting to 'reclaim the bird from the wild'
iv seen her for the last three nights in a row and tonight the first night when i took my equiptment up she was no where to be seen.
just my luck eh :|
i dont understand defra they would have our arse if we purposley let a hh or redtail go in to the wild and do the same when we are trying to retrive the bird and put it back where it belongs to do what it was originally intended to do

There is a set time limit for "reclaiming a bird"!!!! Not sure what it is though. Essentially if the bird is feral or semi feral any means to bring it back to captivity will be deemed as trapping. Also the bird can NEVER be claimed legally as yours.

this isnt my intention mate-i 100% want the bird returned to its owner- as i dont really want to be flying two bids-want to get the most out of the one i got

What are you saying here Sprout. If the bird has gone "feral" the original owner can never legally reclaim it?
Clarify please?
