Isn't pea gravel like 4mm gravel? I got some ordered and on its way tomorrow from a local qaurry. 6mm i think would be fine as long as the hawk dont play around with it :?

If you are using pea gravel, you want it to be the 10mm stuff and consist of mainly round edge stone (hence the name Pea Gravel). It can be quite hard to get in some areas and if you can, get washed gravel. It seems a lot more expensive, but what you get is only gravel whereas if its straight from the quarry, you will find a lot of it is sand and dirt. Not a big problem though if its only for small mews as you can power wash it yourself but for bigger areas that can be a pain in the a***

Here's some 10mm pea gravel used in Japanese gardens. White, so you don't see the sh**e. Ooh that rhymes.

nice one takajo, but it's hard to find here.
I once used some stuff called hydroton. You can buy it from hydroponic garden centres but it costs a bomb. the good thing about it is it is extremely lite, in fact it floats in water and will not break feathers. but i just ordered a tonne of pea gravel instead on monday delivered for 25 quid.

I have some of the white stones in the Sakers enclosure, cost about £4 per bag; starts to turn yellow in time with the mutes etc!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps I'll have to boil it up and make a drop of soup with it !!
This is costing 16 quid for a ton and a half( i gotta colloct it myself lol) they wont deliver that little amount. b and q do the bags but there a feking joke. the avairy is 12x8 so its gonna take a good bit. :S

White stones 2 and a half quid for a 10kg bag in Japan. I change the rox seasonally for hygene but spray them down well evry day or so. A nice bonsai in the middle.
Have you tried collecting some from rivers/streams?

All depend on how deep you want it.

Sean, I couldn't get pea gravel up here, so I used a smooth type of pebble dashing, it took a ton bag to do the chamber and weathering to a depth of about 3 inches.
Gary
and what size is yours gary? 3 inches sounds good to me

The chamber is 10x9 and the weathering is 6x6, the pebble dashing is about 5 or 6mm and was a lot cheaper than the wash pea gravel had it been available, when are you sorting out your camera, I can't wait to see the floating mews. (I might need some advice on draining the weathering lawn)

I've got my pebbles quite shallow. Just a thin layer above the floor thinking that the mutes will wash away easier. Which do you think is easier, deep or shallow?
