I'm saying nothing as it will be misinterpreted
Kev
If your bird constantly bates, is nervous of your hand and body movements, bates off the perch when you approach, doesn't step up, p*sses off when you fly it, etc you will know it has not "bonded" with you.
Proper manning of a bird is the key to any of these not happening.

Yes but ain't all these the characteristics of a young bird anyway till it has settled down ??

If you are discussing your own bird at the age it is now then it probably won't have bonded with you yet, but I cant remember how its training is going. If it doesnt do the first four things I've mentioned I wouldnt be flying it free or it will do the fifth :!:
I think you have flown a harris for a season before so you will know if it bonded with you.
Do you think it did, if so what led you to believe so - that will answer your own question.

Did yours not bond with you last season falconer? I found bonding as such happens in a more pronounced fashion when the hawk receives regular, fresh kills.

I'm trying to post a simple explanation to your question but any more to my first post but try this.
How do you know if a human likes you? By judging their behaviour towards you.
Apply the same train of thought to your bird.

Your bird has bonded with you when he looks forward to you coming, looks for you if you hide, is relaxed with his feathers and posture, happy to sleep on the fist if needs be and looks happy. Most the time, you can judje it yourself.

Hi Hannah
STAR does some of those things but not others
I.E sometimes relaxed enough to sit on glove with one foot up, which by way i never had with other birds I'll try get a pic't of this to prove.
But also sometimes sits with tail fanned out and looking at me nervously and a little jumpy.

Your bird is only young, give her time.
Do you mind if I ask if you trained your last hawk and how often it was flown (hunted) and was it killing regularly - I'm sorry I don't know so thought I'd ask.

It seems such an easy obvious question, yet its hard to answer...i think i would consider a bird bonded if she won't let you go far away, and comes to the fist for no food as a chance to hunt. Not reacting to your stroking their back or tail etc also shows they are relaxed, but the hunting bond is more important imo.

bonding with your bird is a very difficult one because when it needs food you are a food source yet i wonder how many falconers who think they have a strong bond when the birds when they are at fat weight or just gorged on a kill ...bond gone there up a tree not coming back
