My HH chased one at the begining of the year whilst we were out on a Hawking Day with the local centre; he chased it for a good 150 yards but was unable to catch it. The flight was highly spectacular though. The woodcock twisted and turned through the woods but Kier just couldn't get that extra few feet on it. We were glad really as we haven't got too many down here.
It made a good talking point over coffee afterwards.

it would have been cool, their fast flyers and coz their kinda small they can fly in all directions and change very quick

i heard their meat is expensive, i never tasted it before

My FHH had a go at one last season; it was too fast and agile for her and the very heavy cover hampered her somewhat. Doubt if she would have caught it even if it had been in the open.

There's a guy in Florida that hunts them with a passion! He uses merlins and right now a barbary. You can read about it at http://www.merlinfalconry.com/snipenamedbob.htm
His website has pics of his barbary chasing some snipe (woodcock) too.

Hey Blackbird, you think a spar could take one in fair flight?

Not sure, the gos got close many times but you'll not know how hard the woodcock was trying to evade it. This winter I will try the spar from the fist over a pointer and see how it works out, but the woodcock will be flown in a sporting way and given a decent slip distance otherwise it would be a waste of a quality sporting bird to mug it on take off or take them from trees (just my opinion, if others enjoy this type of flight - each to their own).

I've seen those little ******s fly (the woodcock) and they are FAST! I jumped a couple when I was walking my spar along a country road with a ditch next to it last year before she was hunting. I'd only seen pigeons and they usual dicky birds and then the woodcock shot up and turned on the afterburners. Compared to all the other birds I'd seen that day it was going warp speed! It would be awesome to see my little spar fly one down. It would definitely have to be toward the end of the season though after she's fit and flying down everything else in the air.

Its a well acknowleged fact that the Woodcock using afterburner can get up to .5 past lightspeed in zero seconds flat

Yes Moses it is possible he caught 3, but not off the fist at an already moving woodcock. Most likely caught by surprise or the hawk was in a tree above taking them on the rise.
