View Full Version : Bamboo bars
I was going to use conduit pipe as bars but them seem a little easy to break into, so instead i am goign to use bamboo bars and on the outside, a few inches back, im going to put welded mesh on, is this ok? i seen that glasier used this method but im wondering about the bars scalping the hawk?

Hi Sean, have a look at 20mm galvanised conduit at your local electrical wholesaler. It's obviosly metal so will not break and because its galvanised it will not go rusty. It comes in 3.75 meter lengths so you shouldn't need much. I've used black enameled here but I will be changing next year.

Hi Sean,
Last month I went to Germany's oldest BOP center. They use bamboo. I talked to one of the falconers about it and he said it is very good. They use it for all their birds including the big eagles.

Here we go again.....
Because the bars are made of metal there is no give at all.
My reason for using bars is beacause there are no cross bars as there are in mesh, there is nothing for the bird to grip onto, therefor no feather damage. If you put a shelf infront of the bars the bird will land it in preference to hitting the bars. My Saker lays on the shelf and sticks her head out between the bars.!!!!!
The best way to size them is to cut them to the length of the opening, drill corresponding holes in 2 pieces of 2x1 batten and simply thread the bars into the holes and fix the batten.
As for cost....its who you know not what you know... but I beleive they are about £5.00 per length.

Very neat sert up goose. I wouldnt ever recomend welded mesh sean, birds turn into monkeys when keen and start walking around climbing the meash, hanging upside down....only problem is what goose said, and that feather damage.
And damage to the cere, seen it happen a lot of times.
kornie i meant welded mesh outside the bamboo, a few inches away from the bamboo so that the hawk cant get at it , and the mesh wiuld also be backup incase a bar broke ect. goose how far apart do you make the bars? i seen a male harris go wrong a gap of about 3 inches lol :o

8'x6' and 6'6" sloping to 6' at the rear. I just taken down an old shed next to it so next spring I hope to make it a bit longer to accomodate a weighing room and also a double door system which I really should have.

Hi Sean
If its any use to you I've used the plastic conduit and 'reinforced' with good old bamboo up the inside of the conduit. Seems to reduce the flex in the conduit without being ridgid (no not fridgid <lol>).
Cheers
Malcolm
thanks for the advice guys :D

I used plastic conduit and then 'injected' it with expanding foam. As long as you don't inject too much into the tube, its great. Quite firm but will flex a little.

when I only wanted short lengths I chatted up a local shop and asked for a price for all his broom handles. they worked out at 60p each and each handle made 2 bars. I use fine weld mesh outside the bars too, about 2" gap. That is to stop mice, rats or any thing else getting in.
brush handles are liek 2 pound each here lol :o
