Hi all something I'm not quite sure about even though I've read over and over again. When one as purchased a BOP does the BOP live in a Mews or a Weathering? Only this is what I've read Falconer's use to keep there Hawks indoors in a Mew's Putting them out on the lawn in the day time. The more modern approach to housing a Hawk is in the weathering. If it is the choice of the Austringer which is the better of the two. Or would both of them be recommended i have got the room for Mew's and weathering if both are needed.

Birds are housed in either Mews or Aviaries...
Birds are then put out to the weathering so they can sit outside in the sun etc...

Hi ninja jon, from what i understand is that mews is the birds housing. a little building you put together so your bird can be free lofted and stress free during the moulting months and is a place for your bird to be put away safe from unwanted visitors. Weathering your bird is to place him outside on the lawn to soak up some rays (obviously not in the hot sunshine). a little shelter can be provided (and a little bath to the side of the bow perch or block).

To begin with, your raptor will need room to move around in. A mews tends to fit the description for this. And your mews shouldn't be cluttered about with peripheral things that you think look hawky and cool. Rather a simple mews with perches (of different height so she can ladder about) and bath. A weathering is just a roof, and I've seen wing tip frostbite in harrises (which has the wing drop off!) because the owner thought that was all the bird needed.
The argument in favor of weatherings is that the raptor needs sun and fresh air. Def true, but you can arrange your mews to allow this. If you can't, then make both. Spare no expense!

Thanks for clarifying that question for me Osiris. One other point when i have my Mew's built is it advisable to have a aviary on the end of the Mews. Or again is that up to the individual

Was thinking of something on these lines for my Mew's 12ft long 12ft wide 9ft high 6ft from the back of mew's to the middle felt boarding and roofing felt. Then guttering to catch the rain etc. The other 6ft 1inch mesh plastic-coated Twilweld. which obviously is open. Front window fitted with vertical bamboo canes and mesh plastic-coated Twilweld on the outer of these
for another safety factor. Bath in the middle food chute with platform pea gravel for substrate and a in caged entrance as another safety factor in case BOP trys to bolt would this be satisfactory for my BOP next year. Also read some folks put some kind of meshing under there gravel. Would i be needing this as i would be building Mew's on a course of Breeze Blocks.

As long as the poo can drain away from the gravel, you're fine. Mesh (or even a couple plies of it) will aid that by raising the gravel.

i would say its up to the individual N-J :D

Its always up to the individual m8 but if you aint entirely sure then this is the place to ask... I've got an aviary ready for my birds when i think they would be fine free-lofted. A friend has put hers free lofted but didn't turn out the way she expected as it decided to just go 'wild' as it were. I was thinking of putting my birds free lofted (when i think it is ready) after a year of having them. However, i have decided to put my lanneret in an aviary within the next few months as he is doing really well and I think he will be ok in the aviary and there is always a window in the aviary ajoining onto his mews so if it gets too cold he can go in the mews where the tubular heater is located for him... Not sure when i am going to put my FHH in free-lofted, as just got her 2weeks ago lol :D:D:D
