I was interested in peoples meathods of de yolking doc's, there was a good tread about it a while ago but I can't seem to track it down.
Also I've read recently about people removing the head, legs and skin to reduced casting and to fill the crop with more meat, what do you think?

Helloh Gary B,
i don't know about what you think but if so much is removed from what is essentially a very small chicken and leave only chicken !!!!!! then why not feed chicken ..albeit for the short period that is necessary to not have roughage in the diet ...

The easiest way i have found in de yoking your DOC is to pull the skin from it's chest down to reveal the yoke sack just behind a thin membrane this can be pinched and the sac usually comes out in one, i then remove the chicks feet because they can be a little sharp. I find chicks have been easier to keep my FHH to the correct weight since she has been flying free, i also add a vitamin supplement to the chicks.

OUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!....... mmmmmmm tthhhaaatt stings ...
........Gary B,
look at the first post you put up please ..
surely there are two seperate issues there ?( maybe more ) ..
1.
Feeding a chick .
2.
Feeding a chick minus yolk plus roughage .
3.
Feeding chick minus yolk and minus roughage .
Number three IS chicken !!! SAY CHICKEN BREAST !!!!! all meat no roughage ...
Each/any one will fulfill a part of diet , weight control , getting the bird to glove , lure ???

Just asking peoples opinion Arthur, so you say a doc that has been de yolked and roughage removed is the same as chicken breast? What about the internal organs of the doc, do they not contain essential trace elements and the bones calcium?

The only thing i remove is the yolk because its bloody awfull all over the glove. and it sticks in the hawks feathers.

I remove yolk from my chicks because it was not once happen that yolk finished all over my face when my hawk grabbed it, specialy imprint on proper flying weight!

Hi there All,
I have fed my birds gutted doc from day one and that's some Eight years or so now with the yolk sac removed.
I find being right handed it pays to grow the thumb nail just that little bit longer.
Then holding the chick behind the neck with the thumb and finger of the left hand you pinch the chest of the doc with that sharp thumb nail cause it's easier to get hold of the skin and pull down to expose a little white v shape which again you pull down and 9 times out of 10 will release the yolk sac to be discarded.
As for feeding SA37 some people do say the bird should get all the goodness from the diet, I always dust one chick leg when feeding only doc but that would only be in training and flying free.
When the birds are in Moult or not flying free for what ever reason, then they are fed a quality diet of Quail, Rat, etc and doc of course with two legs dusted with SA37.
I would NEVER feed chicken from a supermarket or indeed anything else from a source that I didn'nt know how it had been kept when alive, or how it might of met it's end.
I would'nt eat supermarket chicken myself let alone feed it to my birds.
Albie..

Just to add to the last one.
Another tip that HM taught me was that, if your bird won't take the SA37, cause some after a while don't like the taste.
What to do is this.. pull the head and Neck of the doc off the body and roll the skin and downy bit on the neck back to expose the flesh underneath then dip the meaty part of the neck in the SA37 and just roll back down.
Job done, the bird will never know it's had it.
Ps.. My last post should have read Cheap supermarket chicken by the way..
Albie..

Hi,
first you should not de yolk DOC as it halfs their nutrition value. You should always de yolk Day old Turkey poults. Best way to do it s using scissors. I will post pics of how I do it tomorrow. I do about 600 poults every morning and if using the right bucked you get no yolk on your self. If you want to have a clean bird and glove just op the chick before feeding. If you want to de yolk the DOC feed at least twice a week with yolk that will be enough to give the bird the necessary nutrients.
Moritz
this time of year i don't bother sky (FMHH) gets 5 or six chicks whole one day a wheener rat and two chicks the next she has a fast day on a friday followed by a whole quail then back to the chick rat diet, come the hunt i will de-yolk chicks as it helps weight control, i pinch the chick between the legs like a you would a crisp packet and pull it open also like a crisp packet the yolk sack will pop up and out.

seezors?! We don need no steenking seezors! :minigun:
Just squeeze it out....
Too much yolk is definitely bad for the bird. Spurt the thing out. Sploodge it into the rubbish bin, spackle it into a bucket or splat it down the sink by holding the chick at the waist (as u do) and, pointing in with the index finger, press the yolk out the rear. A video speaks a thousand words. Watch it on vid or see an actual falconer do it....

well yes during breeding season .as i dont wanta giant mass of yolk all over avairy. which sticks to young and just makes a compleate mess off them .as for birds with out young. some chicks given with yolk in .
but all get a1 raptor suppliment at least three or four times aweek if
i have it..

Takajo thats wrank. Are you saying you squeeze the chick are you saying you just squeezt the chick till its insides explode over you and anything else around you... :vom: :vom: :vom: :vom: :vom: :partyman:
I like it though...very carniverous!

If you feel for the chicks naval and tear it open gently at that point, you can squeeze the yolk sack out into a piece of kitchen paper without it flying around the room, I then crush the chicks head.
Too much yolk, (like too many eggs for people and some animals) is bad. It contains a kind of anti vitamin (a vet will give the more correct term) which means you end up with a vitamin deficiency. The chick head contains the brain which is highly nutritious as are other internal organs.

Oh and as an after thought, you leave the bones and fluff on for casting. The only time I can think you may wish to remove casting, is under vets advice for a sick bird, or with a young bird that you have to keep hooded. It is not always possible for a bird to cast with its hood on and may choke to death. This will depend on the fit of the hood of course, but with a new bird, better to be safe than sorry, untill you can leave it unhooded at night and untill it has cast.

No Kornmeister, you hold the chick halfway down in the bucket or sink, or other yolk receptical (invention idea)....

Yolk Receptical has already been invented lots of times, I think they go by the name of a Bucket or old newspaper
