Yarak School of Falconry in collumpton Devon is where I did mine, a chap called John Pitson. He's very passionate about his birds and the course was very good. £550 for 4 days I think. He has a website http://www.yarakbirdsofprey.co.uk/ for details

jmo if you know folk who are falconers and you have been out flying with them then i wouldnt bother with a falconry course you will be waisting your mony ! ime sure you will learn far more from the your mates and it will be free ! ime not a guy who has made a living off of falconry but just a guy who enjoys the birds and the sport of flying bop at quary ! i started at the bottom just like you just like eny falconer or be it austringer ! jmo falconry isnt a sport that you buy your way into and by going on one of these courses that is all you are doing ! trust me i know what ime talking about ............

i went out with my mates for a good few months & then done a course & I knew more than what they were showing me already on the course.I pointed this out & they took me out with a variety of birds to fly instead. you will learn more going out with falconers/hawkers local to you.

Not just courses and mates...but ask questions here. There are plenty of guys that know their stuff and can give you plenty of advice!!Thanks to lord lucan,Varmint and several others...Hawkmaster especially,i have had my male harris 9 days and now flying free!!So anyone can do it if they're serious about it

I did not wont to say it but I have to agree with Impster!

if you know folk who are falconers and you have been out flying with them then i wouldn't bother with a falconry course

Working with a good falconer , my opinion, is better then a crash course in a crowed room , not that it would hurt.
iether way , like Mikey said "ask questions"

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask!!!

There are good and bad courses, as well as good and bad falconers. Go out with a few, you'll hopefully realise who is worth listening to and who not to, there is a lot to be said for using your common sense.

The Welsh hawking centre in Barry is just down the road from you. Its on Weycock road and i think still runs courses.

I seem to be in pretty much the same position as you (except 19).

I would be careful when choosing a course as they can be pretty expensive and you want to get a good one. I'm going to see how much I can learn from other falconers/books/internet and then see if I/others think a course is worth it, i'm reluctant to spend hundreads unless I know it's going to be totally worth it. There is no substitute for actually being out with someone who knows what they are doing though.

p.s. does your name "New_World_Disorder" have anything to do with MTB vids?

Attending a good course is a bit like passing your driving test; you learn something, but not everything. With BOP the learning never stops. A good course is an excellent starting point and, at least, demonstrates the basics.

I used to recommend you join a club, but not anymore. I think that you will do better to go out with your mates and do some volunteering at your local centre
