Who has applied for a quarry licence this season or any season ? What species of bird did you apply to take and with what hawk / falcon ?

I phone Defra today to see if I could apply to take starling under the quarry licence (NOT General licence) and they didn't know the answer - now waiting for a reply.

Jim.

Is there an updated list for what quarry you have to get licences for? Got one list but i think it might be out of date, not sure.

Thanks very much

Hannah

I am led to believe that Starling and Sparrow can only be hunted under the general licence issued with the condition that it is used for Air Safety only. This means that written permission is required from the airfield concerned. DEFRA should have all the answers but they are Government Dept. :D

With regards to the quarry licence, you can hunt many species that have never been on the general licence i.e blackbirds and thrushes. So why not starlings ?

Do you have a list of the quarry available on the quarry licence ?

Thanks Jim.

No good, that the general licence. The quarry licence for falconry includes larks, pipits, blackbird, thrush and others. This is the list of species i'm interested in.

how many of each species can you take? and can you take them all from one area or doesn't it matter?

In the end I just phoned Defra and ask what was possible - starlings where the only species I couldn't get on the licence for the spar.

50 quarry total limit. Runs from September the first till end of February.

I had Blackbird, thrush, pipit and lark on my licence.

You must tell Defra which county / counties you intend to hunt in.

I appllied for a licence to take black-headed and common gulls.
The licence stipulates the county you intend to hunt in as well as the species and ring number of the raptor you intend to fly. There was some dubiety as to the number of gulls I was allowed and I think they eventually agreed on 20 of each species but before the licence was granted the falcon was electrocuted.

Also I think it is only recently the starling has been removed from the general licence.

I think it is important that we continue applying for quarry licences.
I have heard some say it is not worth the bother but I disagree.

My licence was the 20th granted in 2005, don't know what the total granted was.

The same as hybred,, 10 ,larks, 10 meadow pipits, have done since 1991, even when I lived in scotland, were it came from the scottish home office I think, always apply wether you use it or not, and always send back your returns!!

the starling has been removed because they are now classed as red data species because their numbers have dropped significantly. This said however, the skylark is also classed as red list so im not sure why one is allowed but not tother

this is the criteria for red list spp from the rspb website

Red list criteria

Globally threatened
Historical population decline in UK during 1800-1995
Rapid (> or =50%) decline in UK breeding population over last 25 years
Rapid (> or =50%) contraction of UK breeding range over last 25 years

in wales last year the lark & thrush licence was dropped , i have been intouch with the welsh assemble and the countryside councel for wales since last season to try and get them back . I have also asked for a full list of quarry that can be taken under licence , they have agreed in theory with me that any bird can be taken under licence , BUT wether a licence will be granted is anothere matter , in wales you can apply to take 50 meadow pipets , as for sparrows & starlings no licence is required .

This is the form you need to complete, but phone Defra beforehand to ask what is the bag limit for that species and if it will be able to be hunted on the licence.

I applied for a quarry licence early season for peresaker to take rooks, crows and herring gulls total allowed all species is 50, it was licence 32, at xmas applied to have new licence with 2nd bird on and think it was possibly the last licence supplied by defra and it was number 34.

Many falconers i know dont bother with quarry licences or go to post office and buy the shot gun licences at cost of £6-00, which doesnt cover them.

The quarry licence for defra is free, just have to specify the counties you wish to fly in (as many as you like) plus the birds and ring numbers you are using, then end of Feb do a return staing numbers taken.

If we dont apply for quarry licences antis could say its a sport not followed by many and therefore push hard for it to be abolished.

34 licences for the whole of England is pathetic, apply for your licence for september
