the cear and feet were blue when she came from the moult, she had yolked chicks for 4 weeks and they went yellow in the space of a couple of weeks. Really fast colour change, but I prefer yellow, it looks more mature.

27-10-2005, 04:58 PM
looks nice mate,my bird still has blue feet-not sure if they will change colour though.Do you think they will if i feed him enough yolk?
OhMyGod
27-10-2005, 05:35 PM
they don't always change that quick.
I was feeding quail and then the last few weeks before taking out I fed 5 or 6 yolked chicks per day and she changed from blue to yellow in just a couple of weeks. I think it depends on the amount of yolk they are getting each day.
I know most people prefer blue and remove the yolk to keep, the cear blue as long as possible.

Just a question but do you not think that feeding birds on chicks just to change the colour of their feet/cere is a bit rediculous? Can you imagine what your colesterol level would be like if you ate six eggs a day?
OhMyGod
27-10-2005, 05:46 PM
NO
I do eat six eggs per day
better than feeding deyolked chicks to your bird
She only had yolked chicks for a few weeks all year, think the colesterol is just fine, some birds have yolk everyday for 10 years in zoos where they do no flying to burn off the fat, are they all dropping down dead? They didn't at the zoos I worked at.

I am not too good with the camera but I'll take a pic now and get it on in a few minutes for you.
May take some time due to the amount of pies I consumed today, may take a while just to get up off my arse but wait, I'll give it a try..... hear goes...

sorry to stick my neb in but just cos theyre not dropping down dead doesnt make it a great existance....I personally hate yellow feet and never feed chick...each to their own I suppose...dont know how youll look at the bird if they stop doc's and her feet go back to their Natural colour...

what colour feet do eyas peregrines have naturally?

I been in a nest in scotland with two eyess peregrines, both had yellow feets, tryed to put picture on but could not figure out how. I have had young peregrines from the same clutch fed on the same food some have blue feet some have yellow feets. Flew two lanners sisters imprints and named them blue fot and yellow fot, self explanitory, also seen a gyr peregrine (could have been a gyr saker cant remember) with one blue and one yellow foot!!

it wouldnt matter to me if their feet were scarlet....I just dont think feeding a particular food to achieve the effect is ..and Ill say it again ...in my opinion...somethingI would agree with...but as I said ...each to there own...
I dont do falcons at all ...have no desire to ...but do think they are very pretty birds with or without a particular coloured leg...

thanks
it works pretty well. she just goes in as it gets dark and I shut the doors.
easy
she doesn't bate at all in fact it has chilled her out more
I will change the bow for a mini cooper size tyre soon.
Also it needs to be bigger but I have no more room lengthways to make it deeper. I can fit about three of these next to each other.
It took me about 7 hours to make from scratch and cost me £60 for wood £20 gravel and £3 for steel cable and clips etc digging the grass up was a bitch.
hunterpaul
you are getting silly, but what ever you're into ya know.

27-10-2005, 10:19 PM
very good omg, gave me some ideas there for my birds
where do you get the cable from?
paul
OhMyGod
27-10-2005, 10:33 PM
I got the cable from an iron mongers. It was cheap and the clips and ties were just a few pence. Think you can get it all from homebase or similar but it will cost you much much more.
The clips for the wire must be locking clips as the spring clips can be pressed in by the bird grabbing them or when the bird pulls the leash it can clip onto the rings at each end and are unsafe. You can get a solid ring or ones thar screw up tight. If you just tie the leash onto the cable it can wear the leash and snap. the bow isn't too good as the bird can pass under it and then can't get back in, same with a block so I will get a car tyre soon. I could block off the bow with shade cloth but it still isn't ideal as the leash will not pass over it well.
hope this helps

cheers matey, just need to sort out what im going to use for perches.
would a log do? i dont mean a thin one, something with a good diameter
OhMyGod
27-10-2005, 10:44 PM
I must stress that this size weathering is far too small without the line as it would damage the primaries in seconds with any bating. She is NEVER tied to the shelf so it is not a problem. She just hops off and walks to the bow and back.
Also the air vents or wondows are blocked off from light when I am not able to open the doors at first light to stop any bating in this far too small weathering. The reason it works is because of the line.
BFC 007
27-10-2005, 10:47 PM
all im going to be doing is putting the birds on it in the garden throughout the day so they go from perch to perch
OhMyGod
27-10-2005, 10:48 PM
Yes so as long as it was long enough so the leash couldn't go round the end end get stuck underneath.

Any problem with the frosts ...with ur set up?
OhMyGod
27-10-2005, 11:27 PM
This is something I have concerns with Griff.
When the first frosts come I will remove the bath for starters, the weathering is pretty sheltered where it is and with a tarp over the weathering and side panels closed to wind it should be frost free inside.
I have a 12 inch tubular heater that I can wire up and place under the shelf but I will probably not bother with it, when it is really bad and frozen for days she may go in the brick mews hooded on a cadge. I will not be having her free lofted in the moulting pen during the season at all. If she goes in there she will be hooded, cadges are safe in my eyas and have done me well. I personally prefere to keep her tethered throughout.

Some thing is causing the files to pixilate (go blocky ) !!when comparing them to the attached U.R.L. ,and a passing observation, ..
The down sizing software package can do this and/or if the presented image was cropped ..

I have been using this setup now for some time, for sure i use larger weatherings now, but i think it works great. I dont have holes in the side though and the doors lift up and onto roof so i can get many next to each other.
Does anyone use this system?
Have the pics and info helped anyone?
