[B]Hello all, maca and myself was hoping one of you could tell us the flying weight of the male harris hawk, and also the hunting weight, as most things we have read in the books have gone out the window, lol, and one last question sorry we are novices at the moment, how much food, and what kinds of food? should we give our male weekly or daily he is 27 weeks and went on the creance for the first time today, we have had him only 12 days, (merlin), and he is progressing well, he lost his nerve slightly today as he overshot a little but it is a start, maca is going to join with his own account as soon as he gets a chance online, lol, anyway all help and advice is greatly appreaciated, we have been giving chick, and rabbit, to merlin, is this fine?

ok here goes

the flying weight of your bird is simply the weight at wich you get the best responce from him there is no hard and fast rule it could be anything from 1lb10oz to 1lb.3oz posabley lower

as for food chick and rabit are ok but you could use some richer food there aswell rat quail ect and maybe some vitimin suplements

you realy should be up on these things b4 you start even thinking about geting a bird

your best bet is to read some other posts on the forum ask about anything your not sure of and find an experianced falconer to help you out there are a few guys round your way who may be able to help

Andy............

thanks for the help , and maca has researched for a long time before getting merlin, i am more the novice here,

you should fly him as high as you can, at the weight he starts messing around drop him by quarter ounce. He should come instantly when called in a couple of days when he may go a bit higher. If you lower him too much he could well become a screamer. You really want to push through as quick as possible now, few more days on the creance and when he is coming 20 metres instantly fly him free for a few days then try and get him entered as soon as you can

when he is coming 20 metres instantly
I would make that 50 metres.

I've always used the speed of response rather than distance called. If it came 20 meters instantly, then I'd fly free.

ohh dear my creance is onky 30 yards anyway lol :(

That means he can fly 60 yards then  , 30 yards to the creance stick and 30 yards past it. Shouldn't be a problem then.

Did you go on a course?
Is there anyone looking after you and the bird?

What kinds of food!
****in ell ,how about a quarter pound meal?
If you read the books you are supposed to you would have know there is no set flying weight for any bird.
Whats this book you have been reading " jack and jill" or is it razzle.

Do you research then get your bird not the other way.

Sorry pal but you are a numpty. :minigun:

Seems to be a lot of similar type posts appearing from different people. Basic lack of knowledge but already owning a harris hawk, I wonder if they were still priced at £1000 - would there be as many total beginners without basic knowledge buying them ?????????????????????

Well done lads I think you've scared her off now!

Sounds like her husband, Macca, is the main falconer in this picture but we'll no doubt find out when he joins.

Maybe I'm the only one who read her question with newbies eyes maybe not?? I can see that someone has answered the weight question.

She does say she is the newbie and Macca knows more. Maybe she's trying to get things straight in her own head without having to take hubbies word for it (I know that's what I started coming here for!) :!: :!:

Smily, if you've got some books, read them, and make sure you have someone near who would be happy to "mentor" you both - it really does help a great deal!! Don't worry if you're not going to be doing a great deal with Merlin, I know how difficult it is with kids (I've got 1).

this is why i think that the price of hawks and falcons needs to go back up to a grand a bird also people calling them selfs breeders are selling them almost any where ,so people think wow hawk 200 quid will look cool then the poor bird ends up in a ****** little pen and gets foregotten about ,put the price back up and lets have an appentership like most countrys have

Yep....but tell that to all the falconers that I have met who point blank refuse to even consider licencing the falconer and not the hawk, and claim that they would fight this sort of control to the nth degree.

If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear

?????????? sorry but I don't agree, random checks on falconers or maybe an examination etc would be much more beneficial for the welfare of the birds, why just because you have money does it make you a better candidate for owning a bop? does money make you a better person?
I myself am not loaded and couldn't afford to pay lots for a bird, so should I then not be deemed fit to own a bird, personly I couldn't imagine my bop getting better care and more attention than I give them, they are part of the family.
I opologise if I have taken what you said the wrong way but there are quite a few people out there who seem to think they should be the only ones to own bop,,,,, whatever
anyway sorry for rambling on but its just something I had to say,
thanks and no offence towards anytime intended

Find it hard to believe your feeding a Merlin on Rabbit...? Would love to know the source that recomended Rabbit as food for a Merlin. Introduce Mice, and get it hunting and feeding on wild kills ASAP. (And while your at it apply for a quarry licence 1st).
Try and imagine what a Merlin would feed on in the wild? Rabbits????
