Hi All

It would be inetersting to know the type of hood u Gos men use, do you have a preference? Who's hood do you use and what size is it and what is the weight and sex of your Gos?

The normal female Gos size that I would make is 8.5 Rollins or 17.5 or 18 Tait on average these sizes would fit a 2lb ish female Finnish Gos.

Here is an example of a Pakistani Gos hood, this hood is not blocked in the conventional way but appears to have a very good fit on the Gos compared to any other hood I have seen yet.

This hood style is from Pakistan and is sometimes also known as the Indian hood (outside the Indian subcontinent). This hood style is marked by a straight line where the leather meets that makes the contours of the hood. The triangular beak opening is sometimes replaced with a Dutch style "bell shaped" opening to better fit the bird. Traditionally this hood is not blocked.
Generally thought to best fit Accipiters, eagles, and Ferruginous hawks, many falconers dislike this hood style and prefer the Dutch hood for all their various species.

The ones I've used were supplied from Ede in Hungary. But I think the anglo indian is a better option.

Don't understand your hood size for a finnish female gos at 2lb ish - this weight is incorrect.

Yours Jim.

Finnish Males (3) I flown all around same size - flying weight approx 1-14. Now in possession of a smallish finnish female since yesterday, weight at present 2-8.

Hi Griff , pleased you posed this Q, IMHO ( only 28 yrs experience with accipiters) & I feel that a dutch type hood of the makes that I have seen to date , is perhaps the wrong shape for a Bop of this taxanomic group. Falcons heads tend to be more of a 'little ball' as opposed to an accipiter type head wich is longer, more suitable to teh one piece idian style hoods. don;'t know if this makes sense/ HTH

Makes perfect sense to me, after numerous fittings on hawks, I have concluded that dutch hoods are best suited to falcons.

This said some hood blocks will make good hoods for all the accipitrids

Griff,

The photos, the hood, the gos and the falconer holding that gos are all MINE!!! Where did you get these photos from? I dont recall mailing them to you.

As for the hood, its not just any Anglo-Indian hood. It hybrid hood, that I designed myself some years back. I have tried it on both falcons and hawks, and I prefer this hood and another one of mine (modified Damasc-Dutch design) to any other design. Furthermore, for the record, all my hoods are blocked. Other hood-makers may not block their hoods, but I make sure mine are.

Having said that, no hard feelings pal, but I had to set the record straight.
