Hello!
One of my favourite topics lol. I've noticed a few more people on here with eagles so I've got sum Q's for you.
- What weight's do male/female goldie's fly at?
- In your opinion could a goldie (m/f) take out a deer/fox/hare/wolf (yes yes - I know some of these have been proved but other's may not have read about it and other's may want to learn more!)
- What gloves do you use with goldie's? Would you say it's thick enough? Is there an eagle glove you wouldn't mind trying out?
- Are imprint goldie's good birds to hunt and train? What about displays? Do they get harder to handle when they reach sexual maturity?
Just some Q's I've been dying to get answered! Thx very much!

I'm sure whilst the Golden is relaxed it may be ok without a glove but what happens if it suddenly got excited by something and gripped tight, not really the situation you or your arm would want to be in.
yep maybe, not my arm though ... i was mearly using it as an explanation of how well mannered the bird is even though it is an imprint

That's seems a strange quote, why wouldn't an imprint be well mannered ?

I agree OF. Surely if a bird was an imprint, shouldnt it be well "mannered" anyway. Would love to see pics of the Goldie Addi?
That's seems a strange quote, why wouldn't an imprint be well mannered ?
because of a lot of peoples preconception of the fact that imprints once sexually mature can be hard work .... as in the question asked in the original post!

would this apply to a mature imprint when not in breeding condition ? is this preconception true or false in a correctly imprinted specimen ?
Yours Jim.
depends on how the specimin was imprinted, when the bird comes mature and of a breeding age it can see its handler as either a mate that it wants to breed with or it can see the handler as a threat and deal with it accordingly, there has been a lot of badly imprinted diurnal birds of prey done in the past, especially eagles where the value is too high to risk any upsets whilest being reared by the parent, its these badly imprinted birds that have been agressive normally food imprints that have given them a bad name. Done correctly the oly time the eagle may be showing aggressison is when in yarrak ready to go out hunting or when on a kill

Thanks for the answer, I could see why it might be aggressive on a kill but not why a normal social imprinted one would be aggressive without food or in breeding condition.
Yours Jim.
as i said in the post above .. not all imprints are done properly (ie social imprint) and when not done properly can become total food imprints and display the agressive tendancys protraied in many peoples minds. If done properly then ur right, it has no reason to be agressive without food being invloved. There are too many people following the jemima school of the thought that an imprint of any type in a diurnal bop is the spawn of the devil and should be avoided at all costs. I was merely showing that when imprinted properly, there are no issues and can be favourable to a parent reared bird in certain species.
Not looking for an argument, just putting my two penneth worth in from the experience i have had.

Never felt you were looking for an argument, just wanted to know if a correctly social imprinted eagle would act different to any other correctly imprinted hawk. Your answer cleared this up - you are right to many people believe the rubbish spouted out about imprints being this and that, when in fact a correctly trained social imprint isn't aggressive etc when at the correct weight and not in breeding condition.
All the best Jim.

if a bird is imprinted badly and turns out to be agressive/evil etc. can it be fixed or will it always be that way??

I've just spoken to my friend in the czech republic and he said that this year they fly mainly golden eagles at deer. i'm from the north of the czech rep. and before i came to UK i remember field meets with goshawks and "if" one or two g.eagles. This year, he said, just few goshawks and mainly g. eagles. lack of game such as pheasant and hare and plenty of roe deer give very good chance for golden eagles.
other friend fly a male and a month ago he finished with three deers and a hare in gamebag. not bad....

why have you been dying to find out these questions?are you an anti? of course goldies dont catch deer or FOXES they prey mainly on little mice and things like that, they are great big softies really.

Hi Tomkuzma
are they also not switching to eagles as they can no longer wild-take goshawks in Czech Republic?

it's one of the reason as well. i've been doing falconry for 11 years, i've flown few goshawks and have never paid...guess where they are from :-)))

Hi Interessting thread, i dont know that much about eagles, but am happy to put some in if it is of interest. I know of eagles, expecially Golden eagles who are very good imprints and well mannerd but who can, just as any bird, have a mood on, Personly I think one of the problems is that a eagle with a moody day is a bit more to handle than a moody falcon, harris etc. I have had hh trying to foot me, also my imprint peregrine can lash out sometimes if she dont want to be hooded, but really its never serious and no more then a scratch, however I flew a male goldie doing the same, not really grabbing seriously in his mind, but it was three stitches on me. So big birds caurse so much more damage, does not mean to say they are more agressivee. I also think that goldies can become a bit of a "one man bird" will fly great for the person its imprinted on, but can be funny with other people, as written earlier they can be agressive on kill and during breeding season, so really that means they could be agressive everytime they kill and constantly 3 month of the year?
I only ever flown two, a imprinted female and a parent reared male, both where lovely 99% of the time but they are moody, no doubt about it, on saying that my mate have one who is like a puppy, the nicest thing you can come close to (wild taken). I think that, just as all birds, there is no set rules at all, they are all individualls and have diffrent personalitys. But I would really never recomend a golden eagle to anyone unless they have a lot of experience, and I mean a lot. I heard that the temprament is diffrent depending on what area they come from (european diffrent from Mongolian, saudi etc) does anyone know anything about that?
