Here is a photo of the style of anklet im going to be fitting to my spar when shes going loose again .....some of you may have seen it before so its for theose who have never used it ...
Its designed so if lost the bird can actually pick off the anklet should the jess come out...from the left hand side you fold it over and pass one end through the slit ..it should pull through pretty snug ....it should then sit against itself...you then place the two holes against each other and pull your jess through both holes ....bobs your uncle ...very easy to make...

i had anklets like that on my fhh last season fitted by the breeder only thing i had against them was they were a bit bulky but that depends how they are made never thought about the bird removing them as i had permanent hunting straps fitted so it would not be possible

I use these on my gos and used them on my spars...............great as you can fit them on your own single handed and not upset the bird by having to cast the poor bloody thing.......accipiters hey you need to be one step ahead of them:lol:

Use some similar Nigel,
Made by Neil, but had small brass eyelets - worked very well on the gos.

Ive noticed that happen if there not a great fit or there some give in the leather, i tend to make mine with two slits normally and feed it back through so the eyelets sit tighter and at a right angle to the leg without the anklet being pulled to tight against the leg............{hope i explained that correctly:lol:}

Nigel, used them on various birds great anklets. Did have to replace them often on the Eagle(Elsa). I did a lot of photographic work with my birds in the past so they where ideal for taking off for certain shots. I use them on my Gos(imprint) so you know yourself how easy they are for fitting. You do have to use good quality leather as you also know Nigel, none of the stretchy Shiite.

MusketMad,
Occasionally, just occasionally, an absolute gem of a post comes up on here. This is one of those times.
Thanks.

Got mine from Neil at the Ibr and they're fine, been using them for years. As far as rubbing on the tarsus or hallux then they should be the right size and have the nicks down them so that the only possibility is the kangaroo leather rubbing but then it is down to good bird management!

Thats exactly what I do with my falcons- 2 slits so that way a bate won't make the anklet tighten up and a small grommet in each hole. Tried it once on a whim and like the ease of being able to switch them out without casting the bird so kept it up.

wouldnt the two slit style stay on the birds leg if the jess was pulled out ?

It would take more effort but they could get it off as there is nothing anchoring anything in place. I have 3 different versions of anklets that I depending on how baity the bird is. I've attached some sketches- as I'm at work the only way to get an actual picture would be deequipping one of the birds. This is what blank anklets look like- after i fit them to the bird i remove them then fringe top and bottom, trim off excess around the grommets, and add a hint of a flare away from the birds tarsus.
The top one on this drawing would be good on a bird that doesn't really bate much. The little notches help keep the anklet from tightening too much with a bait but I wouldn't trust just that on a baity bird. However, as pointed out this style is much easier for the bird to remove incase of loss- I had a red tail with this style anklet on and she quickly discovered how to remove them. Never used it on a since then, but the theory is sound and in some situations may be perfect. The middle one is what I use by default. Bird could remove it give enough time, but for normal day to day use not likely. Double slits and notches make moderate baiting possible in my observation without tighting the anklets. The bottom anklet is what i typically put on passage birds to start with. It basically locks inplace due since both sides get slotted, but can be removed and replaced with the middle one once the bird stops baiting without casting the bird.
