View Full Version : What A Bummer !

Just a word of caution:
I took my game hawk out on Thursday, he tail chased a pheasant onto a railway track, a train came along and hit him full on, he was smashed to bits.
I found the telemetry first in the middle of the tracks then him about 50 yards up the track leaning against the live rail, wasn't sure about the cause of death until I picked him up (after safely moving him away from the live rail) and saw the extent of the damage: two broken legs, one wing broken, one eye completely gone the other hanging out, skull split in two and protruding through the head, 3 inch gash in his breast, beak smashed, cere hanging off and before somebody else asks yes he was dead !
Just buried him, a real shame as he was really a high flying cracking little bird. That's not taking into account the time I've put in with him and the sentimental side of things, I hatched him out.

Yes Steve, you know him, you helped me get him back at the crack of dawn on that windy rainy morning after he had a night out. He had more nights out than Elvis Presley that bird.

Thanks for all the messages. Be careful if you're flying near to a railway line, a lot of natural quarry favours a walk up the tracks.

Sorry to hear this Pete.
Something similar happened to me a couple of years back. Involved a speeding car in a sunken lane. I ran to find feathers everwhere. I'm convinced it was deliberate - as the car didn't even stop. Anyway.
It'll take a while to get over. Take care of yourself mate. atb richard. ;)

Thanks Steve. He was hard work in his first year but after he moulted he seemed to switch on to what we were trying to do. He was making 700 - 800 feet and staying right above me then coming down like a teardrop. I was really pleased with how he matured both in colour and his manner.
I'm going to put all my time into the female Peregrine I bred this year now, she's coming on but still has a way to go yet in becoming a gamehawk. Here's a pic of her I took yesterday and another of the hybrid on a partridge he'd caught before he moulted.

Although the father of the hybrid also died (not my bird by the way, just borrowed to see if he would breed with my female) I have put another tiercel of my own with his mother (a Gyr/Saker) and hope to breed some more of this mix this season, if successful I'll definitely being keeping one for myself to fly at game.
it always seems that these things happen to the ones who love and care for there birds the most, sorry mate.

It's funny you should say that, because in the first few months of flying him I didn't like him much at all, he fought me on everything I was trying to do with him. It was only after he took a week's holiday (he escaped and was out for 7 days) that he seemed to put his head down and get on with it, he finished up as my favourite.
