Yesterday afternoon a police helicopter decided to check out my truck parked in my flying field. I was flying my new peregrine on the kite at the time, but luckily my tiercel had just taken the bait to the ground when the helicopter appeared. It hovered extremely low over my truck, then move toward me (I was hooking up my bird and letting him finish his meal about 100 yards away). The whirly-bird circled around and around no higher than 20 ft. Surprizingly, my falcon kept eating; however the rancher's nearby cows stampeded away. The copter went back to my truck then hovered... I thought it was going to land as I began walking back to my truck. My tiercel downed his last piece of quail. I hooded my bird and placed him on his block while the copter blasted me with the wind from the roter blades.

I turned to see if super cop was going to land and question me, instead he flew away... what an ass! I've been flying this field for 15 years. Infact some the local cops have gone out with me to watch my birds fly, but this time the guy seemed clueless. How my kite survived I don't know.

Considering that Bird dog is located in Texas I am curious to know why you (hunterpaul) are paying tax in the USA.

SABRE was lost on 3rd Sept 2004 due to an electricity board helicopter flying at tree top height between myself and the bird. Just before the helicopter appeared Sabre was ringing up nicely; as the helicopter came over the brow of the hill she "straight lined" in the opposite direction. The transmitter that she was wearing had a fault, it seems, as it gave a strong signal on test; but when the bird was in line of sight a mile away it gave nothing (we tried two receivers). She was last seen over Scalford in Leicestershire with a prevailing wind going towards Nottingham.

It turns out that the helicopter was taking pictures of pylons ....... I was no where near any Pylons at the time!

Never seen again :(

Griff,

I'm sorry mate. This has brought me back down to earth. I look forward to flying the Redtail free. I was footed because I became complaincent and thought that I had an understanding with the bird. Not so, and I paid the price. Low flying helicopters are not a problem on the IOW but there is a lesson to be learnt.

There's lot more air traffic it seems. Some of it is due to increased activity at the Naval Air Station. The real problem is urban sprawl. With the new housing additions eating up the ranch land there ar more people in the area and consquently more crime. I spoke with a nearby resident yesterday.... see said that there have been alot of "break ins" in the neighborhood.. so perhaps that's why I was buzzed by the copter. Most of the surrounding houses are less than a year old...I guess attitudes that crime is located mainly in the city isn't completely accurate. Anyway, I'm going out again this afternoon, maybe "Blue Thunder" has figured out that I'm not a thief. In Texas we have tort reform, so the government isn't liable. The way my tiercel reacted I wonder if he'll avoid hazzards like helicopters when flying?? Giff's bird obviously knew too well to get out of the way/
