These results refer to my earlier posting "Boiling Bells".
I had 4 Nobel size 3 bells, all with very flat tones. After getting some advice I did the following:
1 bell I boiled for five minutes in plain water.
1 bell I soaked in Cillit-bang for 60 seconds
1 bell I soaked in Cillit-bang for 60 seconds and put through the dish washer
1 bell I soaked in cillit-bang for 60 seconds the left on Coca-cola for 2 hours
The bell boiled in water sounded the same - not much good there then!
The bell soaked in C-B - 100% better - very good
The bell soaked in C-B then through the dish washer - BRAND NEW - EXCELLENT result
The bell soaked in C-B the then Coca-cola (the real thing!) nearly as good as the dish washer but not quite, however, this bell looks a lot more sparkley!
Tonight I'm going to put the C-B dishwasher bell in Coca-cola to see if it will clean up, But if you've got a bell that sounds ****, soak it in C-B and put it in the dishwasher.........saved me £16.00.

Only on the IFF could have a tread like this. Nice one. :supz: What about putting the bell in the washing machine instead.

"Hi, I'm Barry Scott and this is my new bell cleaner"
I use Tarnex, or Brasso, just dip and then rinse off. Shines like a brand new bell. However, this does nothing toward removing the work hardness of the bells. Work hardness is due to the clanger hitting about inside the bell until it becomes brittle hard. Makes them sound really good too, but they crack and lose the tone. The only way to releave the work hardness is to heat the bell up really hot. Like lay it on the burner and let it go till it gets red. A propane torch will do it the same, then you can use something to shine it. You have to be careful though, because some of the so caller more quality bells are not always made with quality materials. I was annealing some bells when they all came apart. The guy had run out of silver solder and used standard solder instead. It will not take the heat required to anneal a bell.
