Four weeks ago i lost my male harris.I had Marshalls telemetry on the bird just put in new batteries. The bird went in to the tops of the trees and then came crashing through chasing a squirral. That was the last i seen of him.
I received no signal from my telemetry, i waited under the trees till dark and went back first light. Nothing. I put an advert in the local paper which did an article on the birds as its from my breeding pair as i fly them as a cast every season(Get told every season i shouldn't fly my pair iwish i would have listened). The bird has a stainless stell ring on and is micro- chipped.
I've had a good responce of people seeing sparrow hawks and buzzards but only a couple of my harris, everything has gone silent now. I'm gutted as its the first bird i have owned and had him from a 12 week old. He is 9 years now.
I just carnt under stand how the bird has dissappeared when i live near housing estates and the bird is very social, I've got a gut feeling someone has found him and giving him a new home, which breaks my heart as the bond between me and the bird(propably just on my side)was so strong.I live in the Manchester/Stockport area a place called Dukinfield.
Whilst the advert was in the paper i was at work and the wife got a phone call, The person said they had found my bird. The wife rushed round and she phone my up saying its not my bird but i've brought it home. I rushed out of work finishing early and when i got home their it was a male goshawk sat on the bow perch in the garden.
I couldn't beleive it the guy had said it had hit its window, and was a little shook up, I took it in and had a look at a cut on its crop bathed it and put some wound compond on.
All i could think about was shall i hand it in as it had rings on and was this years bird, some one else some were will be gutted. The bird weighed 2lb 5oz fat as a pig and had jesses and loop leash still attached with one of thoughs 11p swivels attached to its legs.
Sat and thought about the concequences of keeping the bird as i want to fly anotherr gos. But in the end decided to phone DEFRA and tell them i had the bird and give them the ring nubers. I received a phone call some hours later. It was the birds owner give him my address and him came and picked it up (THE GUY DIDNT EVEN SAY THANKS) he just said he lost it last night.
I am just writing this thread as i have done a good turn can some one help me????????
I will give a reward!
I would like some advice as well if i would i have kept the bird would i have been breaking and laws. As i will think long and hard about returning birds in the future if this is what some falconers are like. Manners and a bit of apprecation dont go a miss.

I am just one ****-- o-- falconer who is a bit bitter at the moment.

andy im really sorry you have lost your bird and wish you all the best in finding him,i do know how it feels as this happend to me thanx to a school teacher who took the time to ring around and get in the end in touch with the i.b.r who rang me and i was able to catch him up as he was a little over weight, the teacher who saw him rang the rspca who said leave him he will find its way back home :( she wasnt having none of that as she knew it belonged to someone as it had jessess on so she rang a local vet who luckly gave her the i.b.r number who then contacted me ,so i do hope andy you get him back and have a good thread to put up on his return ,as for the chap with the goss what a ****** makes your blood boil ,as i couldnt thank the lady enough who went to alot of trouble to contact the right people a box of chocs and a big bunch of flowers went straight to her house the next day, just one more thing ive heard there is another lost harris in manchester as a chap had his aweek and flying it with his welders glove and lost it read a few books watched a video on harris hawks a brought one no questions asked by the breeder :( all the best on your birds return andy

I hope I'm completely wrong here, but have you checked around that area for any rabbit holes? He could have gone in after the squirral and not been able to get out. I have had to pull harris hawks out of rabbit holes before... that might explain why the telemetry didn't get a signal ???

Good luck... hope he turns up soon, alive and well.

sorry to hear about bthe loss, and the **** who turned up to have his loss sorted...aint it just the way...but please dont lose your good samaritan attitude because of one ******...I have never lost a bird but It comforts me to know there are ppl out there like yourself that will make the effort to find me should I ever be so unfortunate...if I was in his position you be sick of me thanking you.... he is a **** and **** comes around ...and by the same token chances are some decent person will hand your bird over to you...slightly over weight from the quail theyve been feeding it...

Thank you all for your support Jay the channel is 216.085
I feel i did the right think handing the bird back but it just makes your blood boil when some people are not bothered about the birds and only in the game to make money and others who enjoy falconry and the way of life.
Every time i ring the RSPCA i get cut off you wait for 5 minutes and then the phone dies. Im still phoning around i feel someone has got the bird and doen't want to give it back, hes a big male flying at 2lb by the end of the season, he starts of at 1lb 12oz although he knows the game.Styx has a miss shaped talon on his back toe due to being bitten by a rabbit in his first season.
