I am no expert on Goshawks at all I am finding my way with a imprinted 3 season female Gos I have on loan until the end of the season. She has spent every night on this and part of the day when the weather has been bad with no problems. This is our concept of a tried a tested method that other falconers used for some time.

Whats the advantage of the loop compared to just using a fixed eylet to tether to,like on a falcons shelf perch.

The Hawk can pass from one side of the perch to the other or when bating without any leash snag as it just passes over the loop back to the floor thus saving the tail from the leash passing through the tail and damaging it ,,,,,,also a Falcon has different needs to a Hawk and is less strung out like a Spar or Gos.
Karl nice looking perch although I am not to sure regarding the bend in the loop itself
The angle of the bend is more new shape bow like, meaning it’s too round!
The angle needs to be changed for the ring to pass up smoothly up and over. Alf.

Yep i agree looking again,,, mine is more of an "A" shape just rounded off at the apex of the bend as to lend the ring to fall straight back to the floor with no chance of remaining at the top of the loop.
Ian not so much the ring will stay on top of the loop more it’s easier for the ring to travel up the loop if it’s shaped more like a pyramid than a balloon. Alf.

I'd tend to agree Alf, but I've made two loop perches here, one with a loop like Carl's, one with a loop that's more acute - the main thing is tho', that the ring passes through, and lies on the floor, after the hawk bates. It does in the case of my birds, but I appreciate your concern. Very much depends on the hawk, I reckon ;), when it comes to bating, and the safety of perches.

I have had this style of shelf for spars and gosses for a couple of seasons and they work well in reducing any feather damage, I also use(and you might think this sounds daft) a rubber ring instead of a metal one to attach the leash to, it is off a hoover VERY STRONG and totally safe never had one snap, rot or eaten. It gives a bit of flexability if the birds bates, they can be bought at the local market for pence, the code number is pp60,

Also forgot to mension my shelf is fixed at chest hieght off the deck, this helps when picking the bird up and if the weather gets colder, frost etc

Allan, I would have to price this individual to customer requirements.
The maxium width we would be 905mm wide (width of a roll of astro turf) x 1220mm in depth the height i have is 900mm high. I hope this helps.

Looks a bit dangerous to me:(
Phil as long as the perch is bolted down and possibly it could be wider in length and I would prefer a ring instead of this tethering arrangement and I like a pole running the length so the hawk can wrap its feet around its natural position, apart from that it’s a good perch perfect for accipiter’s. Alf.

I also like the idea of a loop perch a lot.
Would also however prefer a round ring, and also i myself do use some type of plastic/rubber ring instead of a metal one outside and currently this ring is used for more than 1,5 years already and still strong and as it was in beginning. I like this rubber ring instead of metal one also because of the reasons being mentioned and as long as the material is suitable it is great option.

Jim, We can make these loop perches to your own specification the 3 ft wide one I am using has worked a treat for me. For a 4ft it would cost around £65.00 inc Vat.
Regards Carl
Hi Carl, i've given it a bit of thought and you're right, a 3ft would probably be better than a 4ft, in that the hawk won't be tempted to bate along the perch.
Does anyone else intend to keep a PR Gos on one of these?
Personally i've used a screen perch for eons, but am open to any/all ideas, and this looks a good option,
Jim

Jim, Today we have dispatched today 4 x 46" Loop Perches and 2 x 48" Loop Perches. this size seems to be quite popular but personally I will be sticking to the 3ft loop perch myself.
