A message from Mike Ridler :

Dear all,

I am sorry to have to tell you that Dick passed away peacefully this morning at Pendruccombe House Nursing Home. He had been growing steadily more frail in recent weeks. Robin Paris was with him at the time, so we have the consolation of knowing that he had a friend there at the end.

Dick's wish was to have a church service at South Petherwin and for his ashes to be interred with Marge's in the churchyard there. We are making arrangements for a funeral service on Thursday 17 December at South Petherwin Church at 11.00, followed by a cremation at Bodmin at 12.30.

We realise that this will be short notice for many of his friends all over the country, and that the Christmas period is not only difficult for travelling but everybody also has other commitments - so we plan to arrange a memorial service later in the New Year. That will be more a celebration of Dick's life, once the sadness of his loss has lessened. It will also be the occasion for interring his ashes. We shall let everybody have good notice of the date and the final arrangements.

For the immediate future, we are going ahead with the 'silent auction' at Dick's bungalow this coming Friday, because it has been advertised and we have no means to communicate with everybody who might be intending to come, possibly from a long way away. It will be a sad day but I hope we shall be able to share some happy memories too.

And finally, I am sure Dick would have wanted me to pass on his heartfelt thanks to all his friends who have been so kind and supportive, particularly since his accident 15 months ago, but also over the years - he really appreciated all the visits, phone calls, letters, cards and emails and all the other many kindnesses in lots of different ways. I am grateful for all the help and advice I have received, and it all confirms that Dick had a great knack for picking true friends.

With a mix of sadness and happiness that Dick is at rest, and my best wishes,

Mike Ridler

Thankyou for this message.
The world is without doubt poorer for his loss, but infinitely richer for having enjoyed his company for so long.

Indeed sad news He did so much work by obsevation on Peregrines. I spent many happy days filming in Cornwall for the BBC wildlife unit with him as technical advisor and one of his oils is hung on the wall for me to look at as I am writting this.

a great loss ,
his books will remain for me of great inspiration , pleasure and definitively a reference on peregrine falcons studies.
I've been doing a lot of observations with them , comparing behaviours of peregines in his place and in belgium right under a falcon cliff, the book in one hand the binoculars in the other.

I did not know this gentleman. But as true with many falconers, they dedicate a large portion of their life to the conservation of birds of prey. Is there an obit about him?
