I was just wondering how many of you go out shooting with air guns for food for your raptors. I have heard that you dont need a lisence for this just the land owners permission, is this true ?

thats correct as long as the air rifle is legal limit 12lb,
I go out with the air rifle one of the best ways of getting good grub for the bird through the summer months.
A good head shot and the carcus is excellent meat, i always freeze wood pigeons down to kill any bacteria which can be pasted on.

welsh hawk you can tune the s200(airarms ) easily if you require that extra power Oh i forgot you must have a licence but you can get the info of the web to change the hammer action and the pressure on the value.
Its one of my past times, only in theory i mite add LOL

12 ft lbs is the legal limit but keep it just below 11.5 ft lbs because different weight pellets produce different power and if you get pulled the cops can use any pellet they want and not neccasarily the ones youre using...the pellet must not cross the bounderies of the land you are permitted on... it is illegal to hunt anything with a handgun.... good clean headshot kills mean if you miss there isnt a wounded animal dying slowly somewhere...get written permission from the landowner, and carry this with you it saves so much hastle if questioned, and saves you having to knock up the landowner with the law in toe... doesnt look good.... be as responsible as if you were carrying a full powered bullet gun these thing kill and injure like no tomorrow because people dont see them as serious guns ...and only go on land that you do have express permission on, if you shouldnt be there it is armed trespass , you may as well be carrying a bazooka, they wont go any lighter because it was only an air rifle... Id recomend the airarms s410 cracking rifle, and I account for all the ferret food and the majority of the bird food with it.. my ten year old daughter shoots with me, an air arms s200, she accounts for more than me ..the s200is small and light but dont be fooled it is acurate beyond words and full powered, but cheap as chips... please be careful ..like falconry, look into it properly and you will have fun and it will save you more than it costs...

go into whsmiths and buy an air rifle magazine...there are a few..you can mail order them...but if you just want one for the occasional foray out for squirells, rabbits maggies and so on the airamrs s200 is the baby...I love em and must confess to taking out my kids 1.77 more than my own, they are so acurate quite beyond belief and when you do let it off you wont believe the power till what your shooting at keels over... youll also want scope silencer and bag, good luck mate

and some might like to watch ;)

P.S. Theoben rapid works for me just fine and dandy (on FAC 30lb/ft) nice clean straight through so no having to dig out pellets. N.V scope for the dark nights too:D

i been told slightest bit of led can kill your birds

HunterPaul
19-10-2005, 12:02 PM
the theoban just didnt suit me ... lots of mates use theobans and love em...theoban also do some good gas ram guns...which are used like a springer in so much as you dont need charging gear.... but are quieter and dont have the kick a springer has... you will need a certificate to use anything over the 12ft pound mark and if you just take head shots and then lose the head you should have no problem feeding these to your bird...I am very carefull feeding anything shot to my bird and disect it up virtually...you will be surprised how many animals out there are carrying lodged in pellets that didnt kill them, and you wouldnt know till you came to skinning them..

What price are you looking at for a s200 then? plus all the gear , i've got a scope and silencer for webly but its spring powerd and lacking , all im after is the gun and the way of refilling it cheeply:P!

Jester
19-10-2005, 12:34 PM
best option for filling is a divers tank preferably 300bar ......... mine is only 232 bar but it starts to lose a bit of pressure after a couple of 200bar refills and i dont like filling up with less than 150bar (only costs me £3 to fill the divers bottle so its not too bad )

you can get stirrup pumps to fill them with for about £100 or a little less maybe but many people dont like using then as they can let a lot more moisture in from the air as you fill it damaging the innards of the gun. dunno how true that is but im wayyyyy too lazy to pump the rapid manually(apparently it can take over 1/2 hour to fill the 400cc bottle on the gun to 200bar.

you often get some decent deals on airgunbbs forum but i cant remember the address exactly.

HunterPaul
19-10-2005, 12:36 PM
you need to go to air arms site, they do a magazine for the air arms s200 now which is handy in the cold if you have sausage fingers... refilling can be done with a divers bottle which is the way bI do it... a pump which you need to take a week off work once you have it pumped up...these are around the 100 quid mark new...or take it to your local gunshop who usually have the fascilities to do it for you this is only a couple of quid tops for a refill...but then you do have to think ahead of your hunting excursions....over inflating the bottle has no add on effects to pwer output whatsoever and will only ****** up your airsupply...and in fact has the opposite effect and your power is lesss... so follow the instructions and happy hunting...

SakerYZF
19-10-2005, 12:48 PM
awsome cheers , so what im i looking at for a divers bottle ?

how much more accurate are they, and over what range , i'd say i wont miss anything within a 30 meter range of my spring powerd rifle so long as it stays still:P
are there any particular types of pellets that are better than others?

HunterPaul
19-10-2005, 12:55 PM
your accuracy will improve no end with a pcp .... the pellets are again best to be recomended by the manufacturer, but bthe best way is get loads of different pellets and see which give you the best grouping at the desired hunting range...add a drop of pellet lube ...and imean a drop as too much will ruin its affect... decide on 22 or 177... now theres an argument...
dont take any shots at moving targets ... and check to see where your pellet will go if you miss...keep it safe and your laughing..

HunterPaul
19-10-2005, 12:56 PM
a divers bottle will knock you back about hundred quid, mine was a present from a friend so....but again it is something that will vary..well worth what I paid for mine though...nothinglol

The s200 is not really the best gun in this sort of price range it has a very cheap and tacky plastic bolt. If i was to recommend a cheap PCP then it would be the Logun solo for a peny under 300 pounds its light, accurate, good looking and just won Airgun Of The Year. A decent setup with an eazglide pump, simple 3-9x40 scope and a silencer will cost around 500 all in. If you get good you could well reap the rewards and lets face it more time out in the field which i very much enjoy!

Jester
19-10-2005, 02:14 PM
i either use bisley magnum or 20.5gr logun penetrator in the rapid. Neither of which are any use in my cheapy cometa 300 springer ( the bis-mags barely mark the target 30 yards away )i even tried the 30grain rabbit magnums once ......... great in the rapid but wouldnt even reach 25 yards with the cometa

logun penetrators also come in 16grain which would probably be better in a 12lb rifle.

pellpax.co.uk do packs with an assortment of pellets so you can try a few different types without having to buy tins of 4 or 500 and find out they are rubbish or dont suit your barrel.

the rapid 7 is a good gun, but i like something nice and light ,ive got the falcon light hunter weighs all but 4 pound as the stock is carved out accurate to taken rabbit out to 90 meters think the 177 is more accurate than the 22 all day ,and the pellets i use are bisley

yeah true the rapid is a bit porky especially with the soviet bazaar night vision scope on it.

as far as i understand it the .177 is more accurate especially over longer ranges as the lighter pellet and faster speed gives a flatter trajectory so less need for holdover/under (an advantage the FAC rapid has as well)

Whats the general opinion of the crossman ratcatchers and the rabbitstopper - been offered one on the cheap. they worth buying? not used them.

HunterPaul
19-10-2005, 05:20 PM
no...not worth buying.... the pellets are different for every make of gun and some pellets are better suited to some guns while others to other guns...using what someone uses in a theoban for example doesnt mean it is suited to a logun, even though they may be the exact same power... the gun manufacturer is the best guide or as I said before experimenting with different pellets...the .177 indeed has a flatter trajectory so is deemed more accurate over a longer distance, but is said to lack the stopping power of a heavier .22, I have not found this to be a problem, as accuracy is what counts when hunting with a 12ft pound rifle...for real stopping power get a rim fire... again you need fac so there really is no point in even going down that road... try the air rifle centre, im sure youll find it on line, as far as the s200 is concerned, mine is now5 yrs old without a minutes bother it was bought second hand as a second rifle for the little one and friends and it gets more outings than any other gun I shoot....

romeo harris hawk what FTLB is that gun running at to take rabbits out at 90metres and as the light hunter only holds around 40 shots at 12ftlb sureley your not running it at fac?????? 90 metres is along shot with an airgun where not many people could be sure of a good clean kill. Not trying to be detrimental but HOW?

Dave G
20-10-2005, 02:35 PM
hi chris r i agree my falcon light hunter fills up at 2,700 psi barr and when i shot the rabbit a full grown buck it was fully charged and i get about 40 shots max at top wack then still take them out 40 /50 yards after that ,it fires at 11ft 97 lb ,i believe most guns can only be filled up at 2,500 psi barr ,and as for the rabbit i was will a mate who had his rapid 7 there were no other rabbits out so said shall i take a shot and he said you will never take that out so i aimed at the bottom of its ear and hit it in the temple we just looked at each other and said nahhhh so thats the best yet ,ive been out with a few different lads shooting and the weight of some of these guns is mad webley raider twin shot and the black logun with the red dot christ they weigh a ton my advise is go to a gun shop and pick up the gun and thing of carrying it around for 2 hours its not all about the look it needs to feel comfy ,not look like some thing out of rambo :)

cool i've had a couple of good shots my favourite a rabbit through both eyes at 45 yards with my old weirach hw80k in prone position. Now that was a beast to carry at 9.6lbs unscoped or without the silencer thank god for PCP's! Ah well good hunting!
