Owls are really lovely i like them a lot, they make excellent subjects for avieries in pairs and breed quite well, unfortunatly most so called falconry centers have pushed the owl boat out too far,(harry potter didnt help)and now every one wants a cute little owl,if you want to keep owls fine,if you want to take up falconry get a falconry bird not an owl!

i suppose your so called falconry centres are really BOP centres but not everyone can have the same name, the centres are set up to educate. I suppose it depends on if they are there to educate only.

Picture this.........A falconry meet in in action and there stands a group of falconers with their charges upon their fists....Harris's, Red-tails, peregrines, sakers etc etc etc bird after bird after bird.....then on down the line stands one poor guy with a EEO on the fist.........Now, think of the relation to this......Thousands of years ago, a group of cavemen got ready for the big hunt....some made spears out of flint rock and sticks while others made bow and arrow .....on down the line was the poor guy with a 5lbs rock in his hand.....sure the rock looked big and impressive and it could even be deadly once in awhile.....doesn't mean it's the right tool for the job thought!

Ok so where dos some one who flies a peregrine x saker, a Gos and a Harris and would love a Great grey, and will probably have a little owl next year fit in.
A falconer, a Hawker or just an Owl lover ???? Or just me !!!

Most of us are austringers not falconers, so we should get that right, in fact what are people who fly broad wings called, neither of the above.
Some owls are real killers, I caught a Great Horned owl this summer, it will chase bolted rabbits, and kill anything in reach.

Barbary Boy,

Owls have nothing to do with Falconry, you mostly can't hunt with them. And Falconry is the art of training and HUNT with a bird of prey. Though keeping them can be very interesting, like people who breed Parrot's and similar birds.
But those guys don't call themselves Falconers either, although they can carry them on the fist like a bird of prey.

The question is: are Owls Falconry birds ?? The answer is no. But in the past Eagle Owls where sometimes used as a decoy to attract Crows, to be shot by hunters.

i have bred scores of barn owls in the past most were for release and once had a eeo i have allso had numerouse rescued owls. i love owls and if i had the time would love a huge owl collection, i allso have no problem with anyone keeping them, i just dont think they are "falconry" birds in the general sense some people do fly the larger ones at quarry and well done to them, but most owls are kept as glorified pets, in my opinion they are best kept in pairs for breeding. no one ever bothered with them until the modern craze for falconry centers swept across the country, showing these birds at centers is an excellent educational tool, unfortunatly loads of people then get one, and a lot of theme are so cheap! they then proudly stand there and announce to the world "im into falconry me". of course you can be into falconry and keep owls as well lets just get things into perspective. horses for courses and all that.

Hmmm Tony Warburton has just said the same thing on BBC2!

Personally I prefer to see owls in the wild (saw a Barn Owl last night for instance, and several tawnys) I have flown and handled owls from little owls up to Great Horned and just dont like seeing them tethered or on the fist.

i think tony warburton(dosnt he bake exceedingly good bread) hit the nail on the head when he talked about the "rambo" mentality, most people who fly eagle owls would probably prefer a goldie! but there is over £4000 difference in price, so for under £200 you can be rambo with an eagle owl. sorted.

haha i agree with the fact that owls arent proper falcory birds and are in another group but watching the program on bbc2 they are efficiant hunters and surely can be used effectivly by the right person

Ya know, I've never seen Harry Potter. What's it about? Owls?? When I fly my peregrine every evening as the sun goes down and I hear a Great-Horned Owl hooting in the distance, I say to myself "die you damn falcon killer."

now. now boys, live and let live.
over here our owls do no harm to our sport, unless you live in north yorks' and you fly a buzzard, and they are a great sight to see in their natural environs.
no, they are not strictly falconry birds and no they are not strictly birds of prey but they do give a lot of people plenty of fun and enjoyment both falconers and non falconry people. (harry potter mania aside).

buy them, love them, fly them, and respect them i say.
