Hi All
I have just received my new Doug Pineo Hi Visibility lure, this is what Doug says on his website:
"The Pineo Falconry High-Vis Lure rotates readily when swung, is rot-proof and washable for sanitation. The High-Vis Lure is never upside down on the ground, and has international orange tail and wing panels which flash to help your hawk see it from a distance. Comes with a lure line and lure stick."
I am not sure that this Lure is safe? Is anyone else using this lure? There is a rigid piece of shaped plastic within... that has no padding to protect the edges that are sharp as you can see from the pics below....I asked for a lure that would be an adequate size for a Peregrine tiercel... the lure is huge! My main concern is the falcon hitting the lure at speed on the un protected edges.... what do you think?

The fastening for the food is poor, these type always come undone and allow the falcon / hawk to fly off with the meat. A normal tied approach is better.
With your leather sewing skills I'm surprised you bought one, wings on a lure are not needed. Just use a similar design of a pad with a hole in the center, that allows the food to be taken from both sides.

Are you worried that the edge will cut your tiercel's feet? Try glueing something soft around the edge. Perhaps plastic tubing split down its lenght will work. Run it along the edge around the parameter of the lure. Or maybe some of that foam pipe insulation that's split and has adhesive tape on it. I've seen falconers in Montana use that lure design before. If I were to buy one with my luck my dog would eat it or I'd lose it on the first day. I alway carry a back-up lure. In a pinch you tie a line to your glove and swing it.

and has international orange tail and wing panels
I agree with what has been said and I also thought the same about the edges as you Griff. It's not something that I would use. As OF said, I would prefer one in leather made by you. (Lure that is before we get any jokes)
What is this International Orange stuff? lol.......... Excuse me Mr Peregrine, you'll see this lure better now as you'll recognise the Orange as being the international colour of "OI! here's the lure you blind sod, get your arse over here"

ill buy it from you grif if you dont want it my falcons dont tend to hit the lure hard they usually spred there wings and simply land (all flown approx three times a day to lure so when you shout ho they come and land now), and a lure that can be thrown in the washer its about time! I get so sick of rubbing down landfill lures every night i can see the concern with the tie i also hate the design how much are they to buy mate

Hi
Well the Lure was £40! Plus a £10 with duty...lol .... I am a sucker for GUCCI kit... but in this case didnt really think about what I was buying. This lure is designed for your method of using the lure I think (well it must be) and NOT for passing the falcon..... however Doug Pineo does not make it clear on his site exactly how this lure should be used (or how its constructed). I think its to be used for calling back a game hawk and just thrown on the ground at the point of arrival (not passed).
I think Dougs kit is great, I have his new Bandelero Bag, Glove, scissor snap & Titanium swivel 16mm and am extremly pleased with em but feel that this lure is a bit "gash"

Hmm griff yeah but for it to cost you thta much to cheer us up( not so sure about that tho m8) hope all is well with sabo & your now having some serious fun with him!
hmm .... i have visions of that lure going side on while swinging and at speed with a plastic edge could do some damage! also first thing i would do would be take the toggle off it and throw it away! use the lines like a normal lure and tie it .. i saw a bird choke and die on swallowing one off a lure

Yes ...Sabs is working well at 1lb 3 1/8oz.... he is waiting & following on at about 300ft if I take him up in weight he ranges out and has a good time and gets worked to the lure when he gets back.... I have not once had to get the receiver out on him. He is hitting the lure well ...... still feather perfect and hoods without a problem...... to say I am chuffed with him is an understatement.

The bag is very close fitting ....the main pocket has a lot of room and there are two large pockets just behind..... there is enough room to put a couple of pheasants in etc. The bag is the same price as the Hi Vis lure!! so if you are ordering that only then it would cost you £10 in duty (if they charge u). Its a great working bag.... I also have the Falconry Originals "Huntley" Hawking vest and will use that when out Game Hawking (eventually)....thats got loads of pockets really well made and loads of room for game, its not cheap but the best I have seen on the market (IMHO).
