i have been reading up on both hawks i am edging towards the redtail as this is a better all rounder so i think.a part form being a little harder to train and aggressive but as i have no hand on with hawks ahave been invited to go out with someone who as kept hawks owls eagels.but i would be greatful for some point to witch one u would sergest and y? thank you. i have lurchers but still like hunning big rabbits witch one is best for this:supz:

It depends on what u want to do both are brilliant birds, however i prefer males no matter if it a redtail or harris.

I dont fly reds, but i dont think you could be more wrong by saying that the red is more of an all rounder then the harris. The harris is considdered by most to be the most versitile hawk going. A female harris will cope with any rabbits ...dont worry about that!
The harris isn't easy to train PROPERLY. ITs quick to learn, so you progress quickly, but because its quick and smart, it can be hard to get right...therfore actually making it quite tricky to train well!.

Harris is considered a more easy goin bird but redtails get that way if u work at them. Red tails hav that more aggressive side to them but being a true buzzard they can be very lazy. However once u've cracked it the redtail can be a fantastic bird so can a harris.
But m8 i would say its ur choice.

there are one or two serious posts Ive seen on here can leave that in the starting blocks....and thats a fact.....
by the time you come to buy your bird youll have some idea what will suit you and your capabilities as a falconer afterall its not a decision you need to make till 06...so I would advise to get out with both reds and harris of both sexes and see what floats your boat...in the words of some falconer on here ..and I read this a while back, and I dont know who posted it ...there are no bad birds just bad falconers...and I think the harris is an exceptional bird in the right hands...and just how many different situations you can offer it will depend on the versitility of the individual bird....

A male can take a rabbit just aswell as a female
He stated that he had particularly large rabbits to go for...and because of this I suggested a female...
Males are fast and hit a lot of rabbits, the famales extra power means that rabbits hit, are more likely to stay caught. All this depends on the skill of the indevidual, but skills put to one side, the rabbit that gets hit by a female is more likely to be in the bag. that little bit of size does make a difference. If it didn't make a difference, there would be no point in getting bigger birds for bigger quarry...

You also find the tempament different between male and female.I always find with the birds i have bred that the males are more scitty around dogs and need more time,
were as the female from young takes most things in her stride.
But the twist is to watch a good male fly, is like a 100 meter runner and a 400 meter runner.
The female will catch more because of power put for outstanding flights the males win hands down.
This is only my opion so dont have a go!

Yes the males are quicker off the mark more manorverable etc... if hes more interested in great flights then lots of kills (i know both would be nice,) the male will provide, and if trained and conditioned well, he should get both.
What are reds like? (Not seen one 'live') that short tail doesnt say to me 'manoverable' . So if thats what hes after, maybe the desision has just been made :)

no mate no merlot last night....it is a once every so often treat to numb the pain.... .... it was merely a huge **** take on the fact that there are complete idiots out there that end up with birds and they only know the breed of the bird because whoever sold it to them told them..... not you I might add...you in my opinion are very sensible in waiting learning and aquiring the most important thing needed for falconry ....time...
the xtra size I agree is an advantage in a fit bird....when handeling larger game... I prefer females as they fit in with my personality...female dog female ferrets.... suits me sir....

I like the famale harris too...it makes me give a sadistic chuckle when a female hits a small/medium rabbit all wrong - gets it by the arse with one leg etc... and for a second you think...oh no...she ballsed it up! and then you realise that the little bunny is going nowhere! and with her one foot shes pinning down its arse and her other foot calmly engulfs the head...
I am pretty sure I would like hunting rabbits with a goldie...cuz theres nothing more fun then taking the **** :D
