i seem to spend a fortune on knives...no Im not a psycho!!!!! its just that I find it so difficult to find a sharpener that can give me the edge I require ...I hate sawing away at a rabbit trying to get it fully open.... Ive tried from the cheap opinal knives to the buck knives that come with a steel etc...and lots in between.....any suggestions.... got very frustrated by the diamond sharpener..and the kit cost a fortune....

Sounds stupid but you can get stanley knives with longish blades now.
When they are blunt just replace the blades as they are cheap as chips

for a good knife that sharpens up well you have to go a long way to beat anything from Opinel

HP,
Do a search on Lansky sharpening systems, easy to use and will bring an edge on any knife - too sharp sometimes.

dont get a new knife! learn how to sharpen one properly. learn how to get the angle you want - one thats sharp enough but durable - buy a selection of sharpening stones, and do it properly - get rid of the steal, they are not for sharpening, but to bring the edge back in line on and already sharp knife.

heres one of the many site you shuld look at

http://www.physics.mun.ca/~sstamp/knives/sharpen.html

have fun - you could sell some of your blades and buy that eagle you want :D

changing the subject slightly, i bought a good quality butchers meat cleaver for under£20 it chops straight through an unskinned rabbit in one blow. no good for the field but quick for large scale feeding,

Opinel correctly sharpened guts real easy. I also carry secateurs for brambles. I also use these for chopping off the bunny feet and for disecting it in to 'bite' size pieces for the freezer. If they or the scisors wont go thro the larger bones, I have a pair of branch loppers which I also use for cutting up frozen meat. (branch loppers aren't taken hunting   )

like the idea of secateurs as i have had to cut the poor dogs ears out of bramble and many times the hawk has caught eithr side of unsnappable stuff...its amazing the kit you can add to a day out....the opinel Ive got comes with a steel...and it is the knife I always recomend to newbies....its not a roman sword that is the usual purchase of wanabees....the only down fall is the fact you need two hands to open it....but it is by far the easiest to get an edge on..and cheap as chips.

a knife sharpened to 13 degrees should keep a good edge keep away from chinese steel, i use buck but as i have a tormek sharpening system i am lucky enough that i can put an edge on anything.

HunterPaul
26-10-2005, 10:19 PM
tormek ....tell me more....the diamond thing i got at a fair had an angle thing ...too complicated to explain...I have a buck knife with the gut hook etc...fold away loveley knife ..anniversary pressie from the long lost wife...but cant get the edge I need...I use it for other stuff other than rabbits so need it nice and sharp....

i use it for all my working tools. i sharpen the wifes global knifes on them, put it this way it cuts through paper like butter but it cost a wopping £ 200 but as i said i use it for work mainly. puts a cracking edge on the buck alpha

Buy a Ceramic sharpener.

They are the nuts

Have to agree ther tho for a cheaper version an the right technique on the buck hold the top edge of the blade away from the stone the same thickness of the top edge ie 5mm it will give you the correct angle of 13 degrees

oooohhh!!! Posh  I just use an Opinel some one gave me cos their dog chewed the handle so I put some car body filler on it
I sharpen it with a good old fashioned stone that has kinda worn rather thin in the middle from years of abuse

£200 quid id have to do circumcision in my spare time to pay for itself ...and if you think im handeling any other dick than mine you can think again.... the ceramic sharpener sounds good ...I may have one...do they lose there effectiveness...as the thing I have is like two wheels made of stone type stuffand you draw the knife through it...this used to give my kitchen knives a razor edge but no longer gives me the edge that my anal personality can cope with...
if some one has a make and shop to buy it from tell me and im there...

Pitbull
26-10-2005, 10:51 PM
my ceramic stone is from the tool shop but, for sharpening the knife just like my chisels its in the technique and angle. with you devil sharpener the filings of the blade tend to clog the files but buck make one i dont know how good it is

HunterPaul
26-10-2005, 10:57 PM
the tool shop??? is this a nation wide shop...dont do the chisels and stuff so...im knackered but would love to learn you may have to explain the angle thing in more detail....being priveliged I just buy new....only joking Im just not very good with manual stuff ..would love to be ...but ...oh HP your showing weakness...been o0n the red again...teach me please....

THIS MAY SOUND DAFT HP, BUT I USE A PAIR OF SISSORS IN THE FIELD.
I DONT USE A KNIFE ANY MORE SINCE MY MALE HH GRABBED THE BLADE WHILST I WAS DIPATCHING A RABBIT AND SLICED THE BOTTOM OF HIS FOOT PUTTING HIM OUT OF ACTION FOR A GOOD FEW WEEKS AND COST A COUPLE OF QUID AT THE VETS ON ANTI-BIOTICS.
SISSORS WONT HARM YOUR BIRD AND THEY CUT A RABBIT LEG OFF EASY, AND OPEN A KILL FOR YOUR BIRD, EASY. AND THEY ARE SAFE.
I USE ROUND ENDED SISSORS TO AVOID INJURY TO ME AND BIRD.

I ONLY EVER USE SISSORS WHEN GUTTING A RABBIT TOO. SAFE AND QUICK I CAN PAUNCH A RABBIT IN SECONDS USING A PAIR OF SISSORS.

do you use the round nosed scissors for gutting also, just wondering as i thought that would have needed more force to puncture skin.

Didn't someone say a Stanley with replaceable blades. Stays sharp. Cuts. No problem.

I use a one handed knife and if I open it, when I get home it gets a going with the steel. Stays sharp.

Why is your euorpean bunny skin so effing tough?

Saker-Clive
07-11-2005, 09:02 PM
If you are going to use a Stanley; get the lino blades, they have the gut hook already. Use a few times take the blade out and turn it around............................

I personally use a Webley lock knife, with a serated lower half. Only paid £4.99 in a army surplus store in Dorchester; bought 2.
