i don't mean to sound stupid.....BUT here goes
How do you tell the difference between them (eg harris hawk)
I've looked at lots of pics and a few real ones two, but apart from the adult size is there an obvious sign..... ?
like slight colour difference???????
(have not looked close enough to see any dangly bits)

The best way to tell the difference with harris hawks is their feet. The size and also the thickness of their legs.

Hmmmm...........
was hoping for a bit more of an obvious difference.
would you say it is definitely worth taking along an experienced falconer when its time to buy a bird then so i is not done up like a right kipper when the time comes...lol
there's plenty of time yet for me to learn i suppose but would hate to look like a t**t when i turn up at a meet with a mhh called sally....lol:lol:
(must of happened 2 sum 1 out there)

if you can get the chance to see pairs of birds together you will start to see the size difference... go to some centres or any breeders you know who would be good enough to let you have a look. Once you have done that...you get to know what to look for and then it gets easy to tell (most of the time)

Yep, usually weight (and if you can measure the wingspan)tells males appart from females easily, but in every specie there is an overlap of weight (and wingspan) that both males and females could be. In such cases, a DNA test tells the difference, if it is soooo important to know (breeding for example).

Expanding the question here: i know there is a size differance between the male and female and that the male tends to be faster off the mark and the female the power house but is there much of a colour differance between them if any ?!?

I've seen males & females at centres side by side and the difference in size is obvious even to me, but i got to thinking unless i was to take along sum 1 in the know i could be sold anything by a breeder. i mean it must of happened.... and if so where would a buyer stand legally?????

Make sure you go to a reputable breeder he will tell you which are males n females.........So you will know for sure the sex of your bird

speak to cold zero about his red...do we yet know if its male or female....get yourself a reputable breeder as blaze brecomends ...good advice ..and yes by all means before you give any money take with you an experienced falconer...then when picking up the bird take him with you again if you can....the sister to mine is a completely different shade of ****** brown...
sizes vary ask peels bells what his superior males are flying at and look at the size of some of the ladybirds on here...if I was buying a car id take an experienced mechanic no matter who i was buying from....dont trust anybody especially family....b a st ar d s
