what kind of straw was it? was it barly straw, wheat straw or oat straw? how big was the cardboard box, we need to know these important details before we can make a detailed analysis of your situation!

The box is 20' x 10' ,the straw is what we use for the rabbits and ferrets .
Would it be advisable to make a wooden nesting box ,If its a sh-t idea just tell me lads ,lol

my mate keeps quite a few different owls and each pen has a box in the corner or the middle about chest high made of wood so can clean it out and each one has a sawn fence post in it stood upright on the floor to perch on with astra turf on the top with pea gravel on the base of the box

i think a box for your owl would be good. most owls like to get out of the way and hide a bit. I dont thing you need straw in it though...if you think it wants a bed, then put some on the ground along with other stuff it might use for nests and let it make one if it wants to.
Angle it so its really sheltered and maybe half cover the front so the owl can get right in and be hidden.
look up wild owl boxes and modify one of those designs
What owl are we talking about?

I would suggest that you use woodshavings in the base - assuming that, because you mentioned a cardboard box initially, the intended site is damp-free.
could wood shavings cause respitary problems? some people dont even give there ferrets wood shavings because of this.

No, I think you are thinking of sawdust.
I use woodshavings for my captive owls, and always use them in the tawny boxes I have put up in the wild with no apparent problems.

Central heating for owls! hehe would you gut feed the mice on it or just float a few in a bowl of it lol
I use woodshavings in the nestbox even during the breading season and didn't have any problems. Tried also other types of material: sand, pieces of wood, straw... but they like the woodshaving.

if its a barn owl you have then a box will be fine preferably wooden the cardboard one will become soggy and sh*ty very quickly. the ony problem with a box in the owl avairy is that owls get really dirty and messy really quick in boxes especailly if its a breeding avairy your probably be better putting a screen up for the owl to go behind out of the weather this is a better more practical option in my view.

Hi m8, what he means is like a roosting box with no bottom, with just a perch across the inside for owl to perch on.All the mess falls to the ground so no need to clean inside, but gives the owl some privercy/shelter,or in the case of barney's stops the little ******s from breeding as no where to nest
